A Man of Honor.

The story of “Farewell, my lovely” talks about a private detective call “Philipp Marlowe”. This story takes place in Bay City, a little town near from Los Angeles. Marlowe is the most important detective in the District Attorney's office, which lately had been not too much work. A man call “Moose Malloy” contacted Marlowe to find his old girlfriend “Velma” who had been disappeared for almost 10 years. Marlowe accepted to help Malloy, but as the story goes through, several characters appeared in the story that at the end, you find that everyone where involved with each other. Lindsay Marriot is an essential character in this story. Marriot contacted Marlowe too, so he could accompanied him to a big canyon to exchange money …show more content…
Marriot was hiding in the back while Marlowe went to check who was waiting for the money. This situation didn’t go well. Consequently, somebody punched Marlowe head from behind, so he was knocked. When Marlowe woke up, Marriot was already dead in the car. Marlowe felt guilty about that because Marriot did pay him for the case and it cost his life. Later, Marlowe found out about another important character called “Mrs. Grayle”, a really rich woman, married to a powerful old man. She is the one who owned the famous necklace that Marriot was looking for. At the end of the story, you see how the famous “Velma” was hiding under the identity of “Mrs. Grayle” and she ends killing herself. As the events happened in this story, I found how Marlowe was such an important, honest and brave man that make him a man of honor as Chandler states in …show more content…
“He is relatively a poor man, or he would not be a detective at all”. I think in the whole story Marlowe seems to be a humble man because of the way he lives and works. He doesn’t have nothing important to lose in case he would die. For instance, in the scene when Nulty is talking Marlowe after the incident of the drugs in Bay City, Marlowe explained him “I needed a drink, I needed a lot of life insurance, I needed a vacation, I needed a home in the country. What I had was a coat, a hat and a gun”. Relatively, you can definitely say and see that Marlowe was a poor and humble man, although sometimes his comments sound a little bit arrogant. Maybe Marlowe was arrogant sometimes with his responses and comments because he didn’t want to accept or show to their clients and the people that he didn’t have anything to

Why Is Chivalry Important

...Haden Geither 11/15/14 Dr. Blake History110 Something honor, or chivalry During the middle ages knights would live by a code of conduct known as chivalry. Chivalry is a code that upholds a man’s honor and ranking among his peers. If a knight’s honor was questioned he would not think twice about defending it at any cost, including laying down his life. Throughout history men have always had to defend their honor, whether it was with violence or words. Although the original code of chivalry has evolved and changed drastically over the years the main idea of honor still plays a key role in the life of a man. It is speculated today whether or not chivalry is dead and this paper will help take a look at this idea. In the article Honor,...

The Role of Honor

...The Role of Honor The ancient Greek culture during the time of the Trojan War was warrior based. Every man was expected to fight and to fight well. A man's honor depended on many things like how well he fought, how much material wealth he had, and his hospitality. A man must look strong at all times, and never appear to be weak. This warrior based characteristic of the Greek culture caused many problems and feuds among the people. The Iliad consists of many different situations where it can clearly be seen that honor played a major role in the outcome. Such situations are the argument among Agamemnon and Akhilleus, the conversation between Andromakhe and Hektor, and the fight between Akhilleus and Hektor. Immediately the reader is introduced to a situation very much involving the personal honor of two men. Agamemnon, the great leader of the Akhaians, and Akhilleus, the greatest warrior of the Akhaians, are entailed in a fierce argument. Agamemnon has angered the gods by failing to return Khryses, the daughter of the priest, which he had claimed as a prize in a previous victory. Akhilleus discovers that this is the reason why the gods are angry and insists that Agamemnon return the priest's daughter. To save this army, Agamemnon agrees, but demands in return a prize of honor. Agamemnon feels that his honor is being compromised, and he is willing to give his reward up without receiving any compensation in return from his soldier's winnings. He is the leader of the Akhaians,...

Honor

...Honor “Honor- 1. honesty, fairness, or integrity in one’s beliefs. 2. a source of credit or distinction.” (dictionary.reference.com) If you were to ask someone what honor meant, they would most likely take a few seconds to answer and their response would be something like, “honor is being true to your own ideas.” If we really think about it, most of us don’t really know what honor means. We think we do, but in reality we haven’t thought too deeply into the question. Honor. Years ago it was one of the many traits that made a humble and decent man. Men would go through great lengths to get honor, and to make sure that it wasn’t lost, because back then if you lost your honor, you lost your manhood. In one of Aristotle’s books Nichomachean Ethics he described what an honorable man looked like. Years ago chivalry had a lot to do with honor. You had to protect those who needed protection, and if you succeeded then you had honor. If men showed certain traits they were considered honorable men, and that was what most men wanted. Now, honor has a different meaning than it did years ago. We have all heard of the many different types of honor there are. One of the most common type of honor that I have heard of is ,The Code of Honor, which is a list of requirements for one to obtain respect while being in a group of people. In most groups if the code of honor is not achieved your are to be shamed. There is also the group of honor, which is a group of people who agree and while commit...

Rhetorical Analysis Of Odysseus

...Odysseus, the man of winning words, uses multiple tactics to persuade Achilles to join the Argive cause. Odysseus uses Hector in his speech to persuade Achilles to aid them in battle. “And headlong Hector, delirious with his strength, rages uncontrollably, trusting to Zeus—no fear of man or god, nothing—a powerful rabid frenzy has him in its grip!”(9.286-289) Achilles prior to this war was seen as Hector’s equal. Both are the best fighters in their nation. Odysseus brings up Hector as a man who is unstoppable, unless someone who is his equal steps up. He hints at Achilles that his honor is greatly increased because of the threat Hector imposes currently. This is very persuasive because it portrays the need for Achilles, and it describes how...

Dueling In Tom Jones Research Paper

...The Honor of Dueling in Eighteenth Century England In 1752 an anonymous author warned readers of a world of chaos and indecency: “Our Roads would assume a Face of War […] The timid Scoundrel would no longer hesitate to commit a scandalous Breech of Trust he before thought of with trembling: And the libidinous Villain destroy with Boasts the Peace and Honour of Families, by the insidious corruption of Maids and Matrons” (A Hint on Duelling 8). The author contends in A Hint on Duelling, In a Letter to a Friend that the described turmoil would be the catastrophic result of ending the practice of dueling. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Essay

...Honor and Courage Persevere The poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, translated by John Gardner, is set in the Middle Ages. This was a time in history when people focused on the values and ideals of the Code of Chivalry, a code of honor intended to govern knightly behavior. As Arthur and his knights get together to feast and celebrate Christmas and the new year their festivities were interrupted by a man of green who wandered about searching for adventure so that he can disprove his chivalry. The two values that are most clearly stated in the poem are courage and honor. It will become clear by the actions of the characters that courage and honor is shown in several different areas of the poem. According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, courage is defined as “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” Courage can be shown in a variety of ways. In this particular instance the Green Knight challenged King Arthur or any of the knights of the roundtable to take his ax and hit his bare neck. He said to them, “And I will stand still for your stroke, steady on the floor, / provided you honor my right, when my inning comes, / to repay” (Sir Gawain and the Green Knight 213). Clearly, the Green Knight shows a tremendous amount of courage, knowing the danger that it is going to befall him if one of the knights takes up the ax to his neck. Sir Gawain is another instance where courage was lost and then found. After a year, Gawain...

...bloodline. Antigone however, understands “being human” in a sense of family honor and reputation. Both are important, but neither is right nor wrong. Creon, the ruler, has his own views on how to rule the city. He believes that he is in charge and everyone is to do as said with no questions. Ismene’s view of life is biologically impacted. Although she loves her brother, Polyneices, it is against the law to bury him according to Creon. Creon having set law that anyone to touch the corpse to be stoned to death publically causes Ismene’s view of life to become a problem. With her and Antigone being the last two members alive within the family, they must stay alive to continue the family bloodline. Now there are only the two of us, left behind, And see how miserable our end shall be If in the teeth of law we shall transgress Against the sovereign’s decree and power. You ought to realize we are only women, Not meant in nature to fight against men. (Antigone. 57-62) Within this quote we realize not only is Ismene aware they are the only two left to fulfill the families obligation biologically to keep the bloodline alive, but we also see that she understands they both will be killed if going against the men of law and burying their brother. Antigone view of being human is based on a sense of family honor, obligation, and reputation, Her brothers, being both killed, one has had the honor of being buried. Polyneices on the other hand, being left in the open...

...the researcher’s job is to fulfill his or her objective. In my present research endeavors to show why honor killing take place, the concept of honor killing, the communal aspect of honor killing, history of honor killing, and, finally, the increasing trend of honor killing in india Why Honor Killing? Honor killings are part of a community mentality. Large sections of society share traditional conceptions of family honor and approve of “honor” killings to preserve that honor. Even mothers whose daughters have been killed in the name of honor often condone such violent acts. Convicted killers often speak with defiant pride and without regret about their actions. The Concept of Honor Killing Honor Killing is one form of extreme violence perpetrated on women by men in certain societies. Most commonly, it is premeditated killing of a girl or a woman who is perceived to have besmirched her family’s honor by her sexual conduct. It is committed by the accused woman’s male kin in the name of restoring family’s honor. The genesis of honor killing is deeply rooted in history and has been linked by various scholars with ascendant patriarchal structures in human societies. It is not peculiar to particular geographical regions or belief systems. A large number of cases have been reported, whether in past or currently, from Mediterranean, Latin America, and some Muslim societies. Honor killing is...

Iliad Pride Quotes

...Demonstrate your understanding of Iliad books 1, 22 and 24 with specific examples and details by integrating quotes and explanation from each book and “lost stars” in examining beliefs in glory, honor, pride and personal excellence and how they apply to Greek life and your life. Although the heroes, Achilles, Agamemnon and Hector, are proud and have achieved glory, they did not earn it in an honorable way. The way the heroes react or deal with their problems is not exemplary, because they dealt with them in a selfish way. In book 1, 22, and 24 of the Iliad we can all see examples of the hero's actions, seeking glory, thinking they have honor, being full of pride and sometimes achieving personal excellence. Agamemnon doesn’t want to give Chryseis back to Troy because of his greed for a wife that is a trophy. The only way Agamemnon will give her back is if his trophy is replaced, with Briseis instead. Because of his rash, harsh and selfish actions, Achilles runs off and leaves the army and begs, his mother, Thetis for vengeance. Thetis on behalf of Achilles asks Zeus to avenge her son, thus Zeus tells Apollo to cast a plague on the Achaeans. Agamemnon gives in and returns Chryseis and gets Briseis. Achilles is throwing...
