They focus more on explanations of leadership processes, describing leader behaviours, and present why behaviours occur in certain situations. If there are behavioural recommendations are available it means this is usually done more carefully and rarely without any philosophy that anything is possible. Current leadership theories are accepting the limits which have leader influence. "The best leaders are those most interested in surrounding themselves with assistants and associates smarter than they are. Leadership

...This essay will put into perspective what many believe are the qualities of an effective leader. But what is a leader? What is leadership? Is it the person who is loud and outspoken, or the calm and quiet professional? Are good leaders made or are they born with these qualities. The image that pops into an individual’s mind when leadership is brought up, is a strong and confident person who knows the right answer to all the question. This leader provides clear guidance, vision and handles any situation with calm and ease. Many believe that in order to be a good leader you must have three main qualities, which are: Be, Know, and Do. Leadership The US Army states that leadership is defined as “The process of influencing others to accomplish the mission by providing purpose, direction and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization” ("Army leadership," 2008). So as long as someone can direct someone to do something by barking out how to do it and yelling at them is sufficient to have the qualities of good leadership. Not really, being a good leader and leading people to accomplish the task is very complicated. Everyone has different backgrounds and are born and raised with different morals, norms, values and beliefs. How to lead one person to complete a certain task is not the same way you would lead another person to accomplish that same task. Leadership is certain qualities that is ever moving and changing by the minute and must be honed...

Military Leadership

...Military leadership theory brings forth the discovery of many ideas regarding the application of knowledge from a military background in a business environment. Much information was premised on business owners, managers and employees working collectively, how to improve communication skills, and how to define a goal and motivate others to follow it based on military leadership. The connection between these two worlds of business and military is apparent. Many of today’s companies derive their structure and leadership model from that which is applied in the army. The military typically has a main leader or a decision \ maker, who transmits orders to subordinates at lower levels. This model is almost identical to what is seen in many business organizations throughout the world (Rost, 1993). The US Army defines leadership as “The process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation, while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization” (Army Leadership, 2012). However, this definition does not delve into whether leadership is innate or not. There are two main ideas – Colonel Sherman L. Kiser states that leadership is an exact science capable of being understood and practiced by anyone or General Sir Archibald P. Wavell’s which states “no amount of learning will make a man a leader unless he has the natural qualities of one” (Taylor and Rosenbach, 1984). Leadership has gone through several stages of development throughout history, which...

Leadership

...LEADERSHIP Leadership is "the behaviour of an individual when he is directing the activities of a group towards a shared goal". (Hemphill and Coons, 1957, p.7) Put more simply, the leader is the inspiration and director of the action. The Leader is the person in the group that possesses the personal skills that inspire others to follow in a specific direction. In business, leadership is largely attributed to performance. The main aim objective of leaders is to increase the company’s sales or market share. Many people tend to confuse the definitions of leadership and management. Kotter (1990:103) argues that management and leadership are “two distinctive and complementary systems of action”. Whilst leadership involves coping with complexity, management involves coping with change. In order to better understand the complexities of leadership one should compare and analyse the various leadership theories. In this essay we will further investigate four of the relative leadership theories, namely; Great Man Theory, Trait Theory, Behavioural Theory and Participative Theory. The Great Man Theory assumes that the qualities needed for leadership is inherent – that great leaders are born, not made. These theories often portray great leaders as heroic, mythic and destined to rise to leadership when needed. The term "Great Man" was used because, at the time, leadership was thought of primarily as a male quality, especially in terms of military leadership. Historian Thomas Carlyle had a...

...applications in leadership of organization, including trait approach, situational & contingency approach and transformational approach. And this style of leadership is more inclined to believe that the qualities a person is born, not developed or the relationships develop followers. The concept is that humanity is born with certain personality traits, called “a born leader” (Fred, R). For example, like these well-known people, Catherine the Great, Mohandas Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, Napoleon Bonaparte and Steve Jobs, the common ground is that they are born leaders, the people are willing to follow with them because of the charisma (Bass, 1990; Jago, 1982). Next, situational leadership was developed by Paul Hersey, a professor, and Ken Blanchard, a leadership expert in 1977, and this theory focuses on the action of the leader depends upon the situational and followers (Cynthia, M). Closely related to the situational approach is what has become know as the contingency approach. The contingency theory of leadership was presented by the Austrian psychologist Fred Edward in 1964. Compared to situational approach, the contingency approach while emphasizing the situation, but also emphasizes the leaders personality (Sirje, V, 2009). ...The Waiter Rule: What Makes for a Good CEO? Adel A. Davenport Indiana Tech The Waiter Rule: What Makes for a Good CEO? Bill Swanson, CEO of Raytheon, published a booklet titled “Swanson’s Unwritten Rules of Management” which listed 33 qualities of good leadership. Number 32 states, “A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a nice person. (This rule never fails).” (Swanson, 2005) This statement has become known as the “Waiter Rule” and many current CEO’s and other corporate executives agreed with this rule. Fundamentally, the “Waiter Rule” indicates that how we treat seemingly insignificant people can provide pointers to our personality and priorities. Some may think the Waiter Rule is too simplistic to determine a CEO’s character but I believe it is an essential tool for useful insight into their character and to determine their ethical leadership qualities. Can it be that simple? How a person treats subordinates, such as a waitress or waiter, could determine if they have the qualities of a good CEO? Yes, I believe it should be that simple. Every manager should know the difference between right and wrong. They should have been taught to “treat other people the way you want to be treated” and “you get more flies with honey than you do vinegar”. History is full of quips and antidotes on how you should treat your fellow human beings. Upper management is no different than the janitor who cleans the offices. Leadership

...Effective leadership is a vital part of all successful organizations. My definition of leadership has changed as a result of my personal and professional experiences. Until I learned better, I use to use the terms leadership and management interchangeably. I now define leadership as an individual’s ability to guide others towards achieving goals. Kruse (2013) defines leadership as “a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.” An effective leader will accomplish goals, not necessarily by performing an act, but through influencing others to do so. A leader’s words and actions should always match, as leading with actions, instead of words, is crucial to success. To be a successful leader, I am of the belief that he or she should possess certain qualities. Some of the qualities I believe a leader should possess are: flexibility, accountability, patience, creativity, humility, self-discipline, good listening and coaching skills, perseverance and courage. I also believe a good leader will be an equally good follower. The willingness to be led is one of the more important qualities I feel a leader should possess. As a leader, it is imperative that he or she is humble and able to learn from its followers. A leader and its followers should be a team of working parts that are effectively communicating and learning from each other. Having effective two-way communication skills, being able to listen and present ideas, reduces...

...Chapter 1 1.2 Conceptualizing Leadership Questionnaire Trait emphasis: 10 Ability emphasis: 15 Skill emphasis: 18 Behavior emphasis: 16 Relationship emphasis: 16 Process emphasis: 17 What I learned in chapter one was the difference between leaders. There are 6 different types of defining leadership, and the weights of each category vary person to person. Being relative to the person defining it, leadership to me is mostly focused on skill and expertise. Process follows close,y behind with relationship and behavior after that. Knowing that, it's apparent that I do not believe that leadership is a "trait" you are born with. I believe that is a quality which is learned through experience and following specific processes. Along with that, I don't believe everyone is a leader. If we were all "leaders," there would be no differentiation between leaders and followers. It's a process that involves a relationship between the leader and the people he/she is leading. In terms of myself, I believe I have developed my leadership by having been given leadership roles and responsibilities to help enforce that skill and develop my leadership ability. By viewing leadership as a skill or a lesson that can be taught, I believe that there is always room for growth in my leadership qualities. I also believe that to become a better leader and a better teammate is synonymous for this chapter. You must be aware of the various types of leadership styles, and you must also assume...
