...Epistemological Reflection in the First Year Experience Course Program Charge The Student Development Division staff subcommittee of ABC Community College has been tasked to present to the Dean of Student Affairs a theory based program to foster student development. The subcommittee proposes a revision to the first year experience course curriculum which will integrate outcomes based on Baxter Magolda’s Model of Epistemological Reflection. Proposed Program Goal and Context Overall, this program is designed to “validate students as knowers, situate learning in the students’ experiences, encourage the processes of jointly constructed knowledge, and facilitate learning relationships that empower students” (Bock, 1999, p. 39). More specifically, the First Year Experience Curriculum Revision will challenge first-year community college students’ assumptions about the nature, limits, and certainty of knowledge (Evans et al., 2010, p. 125). Target Demographic The traditional and nontraditional community college students enrolled in a first year experience course are the target demographic for this program. While the average age of the community college student is twenty nine years old, the students enrolled in the first year experience course will range from new high school graduates to working adults. Program Description The proposed student development initiative will be carried out through curriculum revision of a First Year Experience Course. This course will...

...Week Five Reflection Summary MGT/311 Week Five Reflection Summary During week five, diversity in the workplace was the primary focus of our learning objectives. Over the past 60 years, as equality and worker rights have progressed immensely, diversity in the workplace has evolved significantly as well. With this significant change in workforce demographics, managers and employees have made many adjustments to not only accommodate these changes, but find ways to increase the productivity and efficiency in the workplace (Robbins & Judge, 2011). One of the most important elements in ensuring diversity is not only embraced, but capitalized on, is awareness and understanding of its limitless capabilities. Effective managers are able to analyze their workforce accurately and utilize their strengths in a highly productive, collaborative working environment. This summary will provide an overview of the strategies managers often use to manage, monitor and ensure diversity in the workplace. First, diversity management is a way of managing others with an open mind and the ability to know the needs and differences of others. Helping new employees, who are of the minority, become part of the "team" and making sure that the co-workers are helping them will cut down on the high turnover which usually can happen with minorities. There is no reason why they shouldn't feel welcomed and comfortable to stay long-term. Showing fairness to this diverse workforce is a must and cannot...

...Self-Reflection - Leadership Development Many varied management and leadership philosophies exist and no single style or approach can be considered to be the ‘correct’ one. Regardless of management and leadership philosophies, self-reflection has played, and will continue to play, a significant role in the shaping of a managers leadership philosophy. Depending on the level of consciousness that a manager has in regards to self-reflection, along with how they communication their management and leadership philosophies, will affect their performance as a manager. Like all managers, my management and leadership philosophies have developed through experiences and the meaning assigned with these. The philosophies that I have previously employed have not always allowed me to adequately address a situation; however, by being reflective the experiences have expanded my knowledge base, resulting in refined management and leadership philosophies. Self-reflecting and communicating management and leadership philosophies is essential for managers in realising their personal potential due to the need to actively learn and interpret experiences for future use. Life experiences shape how individuals manage and lead due to the self-perceptions developed through these experiences. The traits, values and competencies associated with different experiences “dictate how people interpret their environment and what motivates them to act” (Brent and Matheny, 2000, p. 3). This important concept...

...Associate Level Material Appendix E Collaboration Worksheet Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: • What are the advantages of having diversity in a collaborative learning environment? I believe that the advantages of having diversity in a collaborative learning environment are endless. I think that it is really enlightening to have someone with completely different social and cultural identities- we all need to be “taken out of our box” at times. It is too easy to generalize opinions of others and other things, and not acknowledge others thoughts and opinions. Throughout everyone’s differences, we are all surprised to learn that we really aren’t all that different. I also like that in an online setting; we aren’t able to judge people prematurely, which gives us a more open experience. As much as we all hate to admit it- we do judge people. I have learned to take all aspects of someone into consideration, and I enjoy learning and understanding people in their own different ways. I was once challenged with an assignment on reflection- the idea was to look at everything and everyone as grey- kind of like watching television on an old black-and-white set. I remember initially thinking, “This will be so easy!’’ and how silly it seemed. Once I started, I realized that we subconsciously narrow things down in our minds before they are even considered. When everything appears the same, it is treated with a different attitude and...

...Week 2 Reflection Angela Smith SOC/ 315 Mr. Richardson September 16, 2013 University of Phoenix Week 2 Reflection In week two we talked about how to explain the concept of culture is used to construct group identity. How to analyze the social concept of race. And also how to describe how behavioral and thinking patterns apply to diversity issues. We also went over are African Americans still experiencing racism? Racism can also be seen as a system of advantages based on race. It allows us to see that racism, like other forms of oppression is not a personal ideology of racial prejudice, but also a system involving cultural messages and institutional policies and practices as well as the belief of individuals. We went over inventing Hispanics and how particularly important for understanding the future of diversity in American Society. To be Asian in America. Asian Americans face the perception that they are all the same. We also talked about hate crime when offenders are motivated to choose a victim because of some characteristic. We also discussed prejudice which is a negative attitude toward an entire category of people. Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons. We also went over racial profiling and how any police initiated action based on race ethnicity, or national origin rather than the person’s behavior. In this...

This problem can be fruitfully approached from the perspective of Isaiah Berlin’s notion of “value pluralism.” According to William Galston, value pluralism privileges a form of liberalism that is maximally accommodating of nonliberal groups and their practices. I agree that pluralism fits best with a liberal political framework, but I depart from Galston’s interpretation of what liberal pluralism involves. Taking value pluralism seriously, I argue, implies a form of liberalism in which personal autonomy is a central public ideal. ...1. Executive Summary The aim of this report in to critically analyse the implications of human resource practices in the Four Seasons brand. Unless diversity is supported, discrimination can appear in some cases, having a negative effect on the running of the business. Also, working in groups makes a great contribution to the company’s performance, allowing creativity to be put into practice. Leadership is the greatest issue, as it can make the difference. Following a vision of his own, the leader can influence each department and also control staff’s and customer’s emotions as they represent the key to a better reputation of the brand. Lastly, a personal reflection upon the workshops was written, illustrating the fact that they represent a better command of the subject. 2. Diversity and Groups Nowadays, managing a hotel brand is done with the help on diversity management (Mor Barak, 2005). There exist four magnitudes of diversity: tenancy, age, sex and race. After a study conducted by Ely (2004), race and sex are not irrelevant to performance, as opposed to tenancy and age which are judged by experienced staff who believe that wisdom comes with age. Cooperation and teamwork represent the key to the issue. Banks in the USA developed diversity education programs where employees were stimulated to work with the ones they did not accept, results being highly positive and thus leading to a better collaboration in the at near future (Ely, 2004). For the Four Seasons brand, extensive...

...Running head: VALUE REFLECTION PAPER Values Reflection Paper Value Reflection Paper An important personal value that I hold in my life is my spirituality. Spirituality can have many different definitions, depending on who is asked. It can be something as simple as looking for a higher meaning to life, or something so complex that one can base their beliefs, religion and overall life around it. There are several different ways to express one's spirituality; rituals, songs, dances, stories, and writings are all common methods of expression. Finding spirituality in something can make someone feel enlightened and bring strong emotion and deep feeling. Several authors have based some of their writings on their spirituality. Some of these writings are as intricate as the Bible or as basic as an article in a local newspaper, but the meaning and passion behind them should never be doubted. In my personal value system and for the purpose of this Value Reflection paper, spirituality is forever tied to knowing God and doing God's will. We often hear the word "spirituality" used to signify that one has faith in a higher power. Spirituality as it is seen in Christianity is to believe in God. As a Christian, we believe that God loves us. We believe that Jesus died for us. We believe that Jesus rose from the dead with all power in his hand. Spirituality as it relates to Christianity says believe on a merciful God that loves and offers us redemption in spite of, and because of, our sins...

...Danielli Thompson Mr. MacInnis ENG4UC November 13 2015 My Reflection on Families Count: Family Diversity My ISP assignment will focus on the article “Families Count: Family Diversity” written by Eric Sager. As I read through the article, some of the long and short term events that could potentially occur in one’s everyday life are: the age of first marriage increasing, a delay in when a couple has children, a decrease in the amount of children couples are planning to have, and longer lengths of time living at home due to the continued increase of post-secondary fee. Nevertheless, some positive aspects mentioned in the article are: the ability to have freedom of choice as to whom one wishes to marry, and the freedom to have untraditional marriages (i.e. same sex). I am able to make connections between events in my personal experience and events in the article, I have experienced firsthand how young adults, like my older brother, are taking even longer to move out from their parents’ house. Furthermore, the article states “every individual’s understanding of family is shaped by his or her past” (Sager 1) which I find true in my family’s dynamics are very diverse. For example, I do not live in the ‘typical nuclear family’ rather, I live in an extended family and my parents have entirely different backgrounds. The article is not similar to any books I have read in the past due to the unique themes presented. However, mental images that formed throughout my reading were...
