...THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN REWARDS, RECOGNITION AND MOTIVATION AT AN INSURANCE COMPANY IN THE WESTERN CAPE by ROSHAN LEVINA ROBERTS Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MAGISTER COMMERCI in the DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN CAPE SUPERVISOR: KARL HESLOP NOVEMBER 2005 ABSTRACT Increasingly, organisations are realising that they have to establish an equitable balance between the employee’s contribution to the organisation and the organisation’s contribution to the employee. Establishing this balance is one of the main reasons to reward and recognise employees. Organisations that follow a strategic approach to creating this balance focus on the three main components of a reward system, which includes, compensation, benefits and recognition (Deeprose, 1994). Studies that have been conducted on the topic indicates that the most common problem in organisations today is that they miss the important component of recognition, which is the low-cost, high-return ingredient to a well-balanced reward system. A key focus of recognition is to make employees feel appreciated and valued (Sarvadi, 2005). Research has proven that employees who get recognised tend to have higher self-esteem, more confidence, more willingness to take on new challenges and more eagerness to be innovative (Mason, 2001). The aim of this study is to investigate whether rewards and recognition has an impact on employee...

...Int. J. of Human Resource Management 13:4 June 2002 697-719 i j Routledge ^___^ S % _ _ ^ _ Taylor & Francis G K Compensation, esteem valence and job performance: an empirical assessment of Alderfer's ERG theory CA. Arnolds and Christo Boshoff Abstract Improving the job perfomiance of employees has been the focus of many motivation theories, especially the need theories. These theories have however been questioned because of a lack of research on the causal relationship between need satisfaction and job perfonnance. Research on the link between the need satisfaction-job performance relationship and individual personality differences among people has also been neglected. This study addresses these research gaps as far as the intervening influence of personality variables on the need satisfaction-job performance relationship is concemed. The present study investigates the influence of need satisfaction (as suggested by the Alderfer theory) on self-esteem (the personality trait) and the influence of self-esteem on perfonnance intention (the surrogate measure for job performance) of top managers and frontline employees. The empirical results show that esteem as a personality variable exerts a significant influence on the job performance of both top managers and frontline employees. These and other findings provide important guidelines for managers on how to address the motivational needs of top managers and frontline employees in order to improve...

...Markus Christen, Ganesh Iyer, & David Soberman Job Satisfaction, Job Performance, and Effort: A Reexamination Using Agency Theory The objective of this article is to clarify ambiguities in the literature regarding the relationships among three key constructs of work relationships: effort, job performance, and job satisfaction. The relationship between job performance and job satisfaction is of central interest to research in organizational psychology. However, empirical research in that area finds that the link between these constructs is weak at best. A negative effect of effort on job satisfaction is consistent with agency theory, but there is limited empirical evidence to support this assumption. Moreover, some studies have found a positive effect of effort on job satisfaction. Using a model that incorporates the main constructs from agency theory and organizational psychology, the current study finds a negative, direct effect of effort and a positive, direct effect of job performance on job satisfaction. The authors show that conflicting findings in the literature are the result of inconsistency in both the measurement and the definition of constructs across studies that do not fully account for all the relationships between constructs. The current findings emphasize the need to distinguish clearly between factors that represent employees’ inputs in a work relationship (i.e., effort) and those that represent their outputs (i.e., job performance). The article also demonstrates...

...FINANCIAL AND NONFINANCIAL REWARDS ON EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION Madhuri Kshirsagar, Dr. V. Y. Waghale, Research Scholar Dhanwate National College Congress Nagar, Nagpur-440012 (Maharashtra) India ABSTRACT Employees lacking motivation can present a problem for all types of organizations, and there can be far-reaching impacts when employee performance is down. The ability to foster a motivating work environment is essential, and strategies must focus on how employee satisfaction and performance levels are tied to motivation. There are several ways that organizations can engage their workforce, and this study allows for an examination of the impacts of financial and non-financial rewards with respect to overall levels of employee motivation. Reward management process covers both financial and non-financial rewards. The concept of the psychological contract is at least as important in understanding and managing motivation as the technical elements of the economics and transactions aspects of reward. Hence, in this paper, we find out the role of incentives in motivating employees and suggest the organizations to make suitable alterations in their rewards system. Key Words: Incentives / Rewards, Motivation, Satisfaction, Performance 1.0 Introduction: Motivation is the act of giving somebody a reason or incentive to do something. It also means giving somebody hope or support to perform particular tasks. Motivation factor plays a vital role in business Management...

...Introduction: In the recent years, employers have recognised that the success of business is closely influenced by the motivation and professional capacity of their workforces. Accordingly, companies are faced with the challenge of increasing the level of employee commitment, job satisfaction and motivation (Greene, 2001). In this regard, it is important for companies to take into consideration the impact of employee needs, morale and expectations and to negotiate appropriate work arrangements for motivating employees as part of performance recognition. The following paper presents a discussion on the importance of employee motivation in the workplace. The discussion is mainly based on literature review and points that employee motivation is necessary for improved work performance. The paper has explored the important contributing played by work-life balance and financial incentives in improving employee motivation. The research indicates that the two factors foster loyalty by employees, increased performance and commitment, which are essential indications of motivation. The concept of Employee Motivation and Rewards Most discussions of motivation begin with the concept of individual needs – the unfulfilled physiological or psychological desires of an individual. Content theories of motivation use individual needs to explain the behaviours and attitudes of people at work. The basic logic is straightforward. People have needs. They engage in behaviours to obtain extrinsic and intrinsic...

...CHAPTER 1 Folly of Rewarding “A” while hoping for “B” – Giving the employees rewards for hoping more work is done. Intrinsic/Relational – satisfy higher level needs for self-esteem and development. Recognition & status, employment security, challenging work, learning opportunities Extrinsic/Transactional – Satisfy basic needs for survival and security. Benefits include income protection, allowances, and work/life focus. Cash compensation includes long-term incentives, short-term incentives, and merit costs of living. Before a company starts developing its compensation system, it needs to establish a reward strategy. This is a mix of rewards both extrinsic and intrinsic, that the organizations intend to provide. It is the blue print for creating the reward system. Compensation system has 3 main components: 1) Base pay – the foundation pay component for most employees and is generally based on some unit of time. (Per hour, week, month) 2) Performance Pay – relates employee monetary rewards to some measure of individual, group or organizational performance. 3) Indirect Pay – noncash items or services that satisfy a variety of specific employee needs such as health protection. The first step in a compensation strategy is to determine the role that compensation will play in the reward system. Since most organizations want to minimize compensation costs wherever possible, you have to identify what other rewards are being provided and determine if...
