We’ll be exploring the world of statistics from a business perspective this week, allowing you to practice your skills with descriptive statistics, formatting, graphs, and regression analysis. As discussed in the lesson, the value of statistics lies in the ability to analyze data more effectively for the purpose of improving decision making. You might have heard the expression that “statistics never lie, and only liars use statistics”. There is an obvious truth in this statement, in that, depending on the questions being asked and the data collected, the statistics can skew reality. For example, it is true that as ice cream sales increase, accidents at swimming pools increase. Does this mean that the more ice cream that is sold, the more accidents it causes (correlation/causation)? Of course not, but the data, if not interpreted correctly, could lead to false conclusions. It just so happens that both are correlated to a rise in temperature in the summertime. The hotter it is outside, the more kids flock to swimming pools, leading to more accidents, and the more ice cream is sold. So you see, although statistics are vital in the world of decision making, you have to be wise, and ask the right questions. ...knowledge of the rock formation. Furthermore, she paints a picture in the reader’s mind of the ‘roller-coaster’ ride of the rapids where the passengers ‘perched on the side tubes’, adding a sense of danger. “Tightest packing system I had ever seen.” This shows us that there was no possible way of ejecting off the raft, therefore it couldn’t be possible to break ‘Ed’s rules’ but somehow she manages to do so. Therefore we learn that she is a rule breaker a ‘rebel’. Explain how the headline, sub-headline and picture are effective and how they link with the text? The large, bold title, “Fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex Sue may of died of a sore throat.” The element of humour plays a strong part in this title, along with the contradicting ideas of this dinosaur being fearsome, yet dying of something so insignificant. The possibility that this humongous Tyrannosaurus rex has been defeated by what’s no more than a common cold is laughable. The picture of what is described as a ‘Fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex’ definitely proves this as true. Although it is just a skeleton it has many elements of power especially due to its size and big, sharp teeth to penetrate...

...job. Difference in variable types The difference in qualitative and quantitative variables is that it is the way you approach it. Qualitative research has to do with a specific observation, for example if you start a task and you understand it, and then you can show other people how to do that same task. But with quantitative research you are taking an approach, like for example a test, or an experiment, in order to find data to improve or disprove the outcome. For another clear example, if I state that the world is coming to an end, then I would have to prove and hard in order to everyone to believe that it is true. ...Black Thunder: Gabriel’s Revolt written by Arna Bontemps is a historical novel that takes place in Virginia in 1800. It shows what the slaves at this time were experiencing and it is in their point of view, rather than the view from the slave masters, like many other novels are. The title, Black Thunder, has a double meaning to it. The very literal meaning of it is a night thunderstorm. The thunderstorm is a climactic turning point in the novel. It is what causes the rivers to flood and the slaves to bail on the revolt. They see the storm as a bad sign and do not want to move onward. The other meaning of the title is the sound of African drums. The titles of the five books, “Jacobins”, “Hand Me Down My Silver Trumpet”, “Mad Dogs”, “A Breathing Of The Common Wind”, and “Pale Evening…A Tall Slim Tree”, in the novel are also very significant. For example, Jacobins, which is the title of book one, were French men who were members of a radical political group who supported an egalitarian democracy. This first book involves many judgments, so I feel it is an appropriate title. The third book refers to what the masters and white people of power saw the slaves as, mad dogs. The last book title has to do with execution and this is the chapter where Gabriel and other slaves get hung. There are many important characters in this novel, but a few particularly stand out, Gabriel, Bundy, and Old Ben. Bundy and Old Ben could...

...1. What do you speculate she accomplishes with readers by setting up her piece with descriptive mode first to then shift to definition? • In the next paragraph, she enters a new mode- Classification. By beginning with descriptive mode to then shift to definition, Tannen allows her audience to see the relationships between how “women” look vs. how they are defined as. Through this the reader is able to acknowledge how women automatically lower themselves in order to fit the standards of being a woman “full of dignity.” 2. “Gender markers pick up extra meanings that reflect common associations with the female gender: not quite serious, often sexual.” (Tannen) Do you agree with it? Can you think of examples from your own observations? • i do agree with her argument since “gender markers” consistently redefines and imposes the image and identity of what women are supposed to be, which is very similar to the role of beauty. Based on my observations beauty creates and defines the ideal image a woman should have, which is mostly seen in social media where it imposes the socially accepted body image a woman should have depending on the country. 3....

...Out of this week’s readings, I much preferred the short story, Fear & Loathing in America to The New York Times article. I found myself rather bored reading the article about the many sporting events being called off, immediately after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I will admit that I am not much of a sports fan - especially not American sports teams – however I tried to read the article with an open mind. Litsky and Williams (2011) wrote the article in a very fact-based, typical news story way, which meant that if the reader is not at all interested in the subject matter, the narrative style does nothing to make the reader interested in reading on. Even the title sparked little interest; I was surprised they did not use the words, ‘terrorist attacks’ in the title, as most media like to grab the reader’s attention immediately. Thompson (2011) on the other hand, wrote a completely different kettle of fish that did not focus so much on sport, but more about the shocking 9/11 attacks. Thompson (2011) aptly described, “Football suddenly seemed irrelevant, compared to the scenes of destruction and utter...

...When your survey and analysis has been completed, the final step in the survey process is to present your findings, which involves the creation of a research report. This report should include a background of why you conducted the survey, a breakdown of the results, and conclusions and recommendations supported by this material. This is one of the most important aspects of your survey research as it is the key in communicating your findings to those who can make decisions to take action on those results. eSurveysPro results can be displayed right from the software, or your data and graphics can easily be exported to a variety of applications like Excel, Word and PowerPoint. For a more powerful report, you should include descriptive text along with your charts, tables, and graphs to give added visual impact. Provide a background Before you start working on the details of your report, you need to explain the general background of your survey research. If you will be presenting the findings to your audience (the decision-makers), you will need to make the basis for your research clear, including what objectives were established, and the conclusions drawn from your findings. Introduction to the survey research List the factors that motivated you to conduct this research in the first place. By stating the reasons behind the research, your audience will have a better understanding of why the survey was conducted and the importance of the findings. Identify research objectives ...

...The story under the title “Cat in the Rain” was written by Ernest Hemingway, one of the most favourite American novelists, short-story writer and essayist, whose deceptively simple prose style has influenced wide range of writers. So, the story begins with the description of the hotel where two Americans stopped. It was raining, that’s why the couple stayed in and just a cat in the rain attracted the young woman’s attention. She wanted to get the cat inside but failed and was brought another cat. The problem of the story lies very deeply and we are to uncover it. The story is written in one mood which constantly and directly increases. It starts from the beginning where it’s created by a persistent and repeated use of the “rain” with a number of phrases associating it, such as puddles, deserted square, glistening war monument. Repetition is one of the widely used and favourite stylistic devices of Hemingway. Here he applies it to reveal the relationship of the protagonist to the old hotel owner (she liked ... , she liked...). As the verb “to like” is not used to characterize relations of the wife to her husband, this contrast is full of the concealed but easily read meaning. Though the cases of repetition in the story may seem a bit obtrusive, their modifications enter into the core of the narration very organically. They carry emotional character, however penetrating the story the deep sorrow becomes evident gradually. We realize that little, as if meaningless, capricious...

...poets works are echoed in their potrayls. Pope celebrates the groomed, contrived garden of Windsor forest as a means to show admiration for Queen Annes rule; under her reign the garden has been ordered meticulously to reveal its true potential, a metaphor for society. In the Task Cowper celebrates pure organic nature, that has not been infiltrated by the influence of man. The untarnished countryside is illustared to be superior to the man made city, as it is closer to god; God was the creator of the country and the man made cities are threatening to undermine the entire realm. The titles of the two poems make the differences in content more explicit. Pope’s piece is primarily a quixotic descriptive piece about Windsor Forest, elevated by combing the descriptions of external nature with feelings accordant to the actual state of society. The Task is a much more unromantic, logical and sober as its title reflects. Didacticism is present in its great descriptions of natural scenery. Cowper saw clearly the actual reality of organic nature, and ignored the pruned gardens dealt with by Pope; he presents an argumentative verse rather than a panegyric like Windsor Forest. Nature for Cowper was an assertion of God and the poem seems to echo the creation story, in the sense that it starts wtith the notion of Gods construction of pure beautiful nature, much admired, and ends with the threat of damnation. Pope lacks this moral scheme in Windsor Forest, nature for him serves as symbol of political...

...Descriptive Research: Survey Method Milestone 4 Reyna M. Shephard Tiffany Simpson QS-500 Business Research January 4th, 2015 Descriptive Research Descriptive research is a study designed to depict the participants in an accurate way. More simply put, descriptive research is all about describing people who take part in the study. There are three ways a researcher can go about doing a descriptive research project, and they are: ( Cooper, D. R., & Schindler, P. S. (2014). There are three ways a researcher can go about doing a descriptive research project, and they are: * Observational, defined as a method of viewing and recording the participants * Case study, defined as an in-depth study of an individual or group of individuals * Survey, defined as a brief interview or discussion with an individual about a specific topic Objective of the Survey The method that was use for this research was the survey method and is to show why good communication is important and how it affects not only the employees but also the patients of this institution. Since good communication helps patients/clients and employees feel at ease, it’s common for people who need health care services to feel anxious about their health, about what tests and treatment they might have to undergo and about what the future holds for them. Many organizations suffer from poor communication which has been shown to effect employees and their work efforts. We look to explore this in detail...
