...Extreme Exploration By: Santiago Lopez 5-13-14 Mr. Zorfrea Grant Elementary Lopez 1 People think that extreme exploration is helpful to satisfy curiosity, but others think it’s a waste of time and money. People think that it isn’t worth the cost. I believe it’s worth a cost because there are advances in medicine, technology, and the economy. Some find medicine which leads to new technology which leads to the growth in the economic community. For example in “The Adventure of Sojourner” the rover’s battery lasted for a month. That battery could be used in earth on cars and on helicopter which helps the economy. Others find medicine to cure diseases like cancer. We conduct extreme exploration so we could find plants or herbs. In space, we could find a planet that is undiscovered could have plants and water that cures injuries and illness. In deep sea exploration we could find underwater creatures that help the economy .In “Why Exploring the Ocean Is Mankind’s Next Giant Leap” Filmmaker, James Cameron, says “A new era of ocean exploration can yield discoveries that will help in form everything from critical medical advances to sustainable forms of energy.” When people conduct extreme exploration, new technology is invented. When new technology is invented it helps the economy. In “JFK’s speech” he states that “Just as wartime development of the radar gave us the transistor (use in radios), and all that it made possible, so research in space medicine...

...a satirized dystopian future of society, in which the world is led by corporatism and has lost control of themselves as well as the ability to think and instead are governed by a higher form of power, having become controlled sheep. The dystopian possibilities shown in the stories aren’t that far out of reach. Many of the dystopian elements can be scene in today’s society but on a smaller scale. As time progresses our civilization can itself become incorporated in a reality that was once the plot of fictitious stories. The classic cult movie “They Live” by John carpenter exploits corporatism that is seen in a large scale in today’s society. The movie revolves around Nada, a happy go lucky wandering construction worker, who stumbles upon a pair of sunglasses that are capable of showing the world’s true nature. Through his sunglasses he can see hidden subliminal messages throughout the city that are projected by advertisements and mass media. He only sees the core of their message and only the reason why they exist. No matter where Nada looks, or at whichever magazine he flips open he can see the same subliminal messages, which can also be seen on money. The memos contain messages such as: “obey," “consume," “buy," “work, sleep, play” and are meant to restrain and control the population. Nada also discovers that most of the worlds social elite are skull faced aliens that have infiltrated earth and want to control the world. Upon learning of the truth, he fights to free humanity...

...Extremophiles and Humanity The Guinness Book of World records puts the tallest man ever at 2.72 meters tall, clocks the fastest mile at 3 minutes and 43.13 seconds, and weighs in the heaviest baby born at 9.98 kg (n.d.). There are ridiculous records such as fastest 100 m hurdle in swim flippers, most toilet seats broken by a head in one minute, and countless other records that make you wonder how and why people thought of them. Adrenaline junkies chase the high they get from putting their life in danger. Free climbing, base jumping, skydiving; these are the human extremes. People dedicate their life to and are fascinated with seeing how far they can push the human body and mind. We as humans have gotten so “advanced” and comfortable that...

...warming crisis. Many theories suggest that different types of issues contribute to the warming of the planet but the mitigation strategies to slow this process down vary as well. When speaking of this topic there are two basic types of climate change, natural and anthropogenic. Main contributor in the climate change or global warming can be referred to as greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases are derived from water vapor, Methane, Chlorofluorocarbons, and Carbon dioxide. Anthropogenic theory state that the development and consumption of fossil fuels for human life has generated and released a large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. According to this theory the excess carbon dioxide is the main cause of climate change around the world. This process prevents heat from earth to escape naturally into space and hence cool the earth. The theory known as the natural theory states that the earth is going through one of the many peaks and valleys of changes. This of course being a peak of warm temperatures, in the span of the earth’s life, could last for many years until the peak ends. Basically the natural climate change theory attempts to analyze questions such as “to what extent is the warming? Has this phenomena happened before? Could the excess in greenhouse gases simply be a symptom of climate change?” (Dr. Clarinn 2013). While both attempt to personify the realization of...

...WESTERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY CAN EXTREME POVERTY BE ELIMINATED A REACTION PAPER #3 SUBMITTED TO THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF SSED 495: METHODS OF ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES; TEACHING WITH GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION BY JEFF KEITH MOLINE, ILLINOIS FEBRUARY 28, 2012 In Jeffrey Sachs article: Can Extreme Poverty Be Eliminated, he discusses how extreme world poverty affects about one-sixth of the world's 6.5 billion people, can be practically eliminated by 2025 at a cost much lower than most people realize. “Famine, death from childbirth, infectious disease and countless other hazards were the norm for most of history," Sachs writes that the application of scientific advances beginning around 1750 (Industrial Revolution) enabled most of the world to escape poverty. Yet in spite of known solutions to its causes, poverty still claims 20,000 lives daily due to lack of food, safe water, medicine or other essentials. Dramatic improvement in economic conditions in much of Asia in the past 25 years shows that ending poverty is an attainable goal, according to Sachs. If donor nations would fulfill their promise to contribute about 0.7 percent of their gross national product to the effort, Sachs thinks famine, epidemics, regional conflicts and poverty could be successfully combated. Americans overestimate the amount of U.S. foreign aid by as much as 30 times, he writes. Therefore...

...Essay – Low Carbon Economy The world population is said to be about 7.2 billion people at present time. The estimated increase by the end of the twenty first century is expected to be about 9 billion people. When you have made a website you have to hire the services of a web hosting company to make your website available for world on the Internet. Web hosting is required so that your website is accessible anywhere around the world at any time. Tanzania is among the flourishing nations in the use of technology and Internet. According to a latest survey there are 6.1 million users of Internet in Tanzania. The developments in the field of telecommunication have been slow and rather late but recent reforms have improved the situation. As a result of better infrastructure, many Tanzanian based web hosting companies have started providing services. There are various providers having different services and price ranges. ...spreading diseases, weather extremes, and rising sea levels. Food supply will be affected because droughts and heat waves will harm the crops. Diseases will come through insects such a mosquitos that carry Malaria. An example given in the article is that of a small, dry area in Africa. They don’t have much rain so there water supply was not very reliable. They built a dam to trap the water in, but the water and moisture drew disease carrying mosquitos to the area. Extreme weather will result from increased rain and moisture in the air from the heat. The ice caps will also continue to melt causing the ocean levels to rise substantially. We will likely see more occurrences of natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. These are the four main ways that climate change will affect us based on the article. Furthering this analysis, I am now going to relate the issue of climate change with human ecology, environmental justice, globalization, and global stratification. Human Ecology is the study of the relationship between humans and their natural, social, and built environments. In regards to climate change, a human and their environment can be negatively affected. As we well know, disasters can happen in the environment in which we live. This was clearly demonstrated in the recent typhoon that hit the Philippines, and numerous hurricanes that have hit the United States in past and recent years. More locally here in Indiana, we have experienced extreme droughts to where the crops...

...have to be modernism. I say this because of all of the advanced technology and globalization religions have the ability to spread their beliefs to a new audience. In the past religions where typically confined to a geographical location that had ancestral ties to that religion. Now every religion has the ability to share their point of view with neighboring countries. Television and internet are good examples of how technology has changed religion at a global level. As with globalization religions try to deny the validity of other religions which causes tension between religious cultures. As for the individual I believe that it all depends on the person and what is good for them and in society. This is hard to explain because it can be a several reasons why it is important to society and the individual. Religion is an interpreted language and is by definition humans have struggled with religion in more than one form since the beginning of time. Religion has various effects on people through different ways. It is very important to remember that religion is a critical part in the day to day events in a human life. There are two events that have happened in the world and one would be 9/11 because the attacks consisted of synchronized suicide attacks within the United States that was commenced by Islamic fundamentalists. There were four commercial airlines that were tied to Al-Quida. Two airlines crashed into the World Trade Center in New York causing several buildings to collapse...

...because in today’s world, the amount of privacy an individual has has been severely decreased due to technology such as surveillance cameras. Although the telescreens may be an extreme exaggeration of the current surveillance technology today, they still serve as a way for Orwell to critique the lack of privacy the world has. Additionally, Orwell may have over exaggerated the lack of privacy the world has as a way to warn today’s society that if they continue to monitor its citizens, then the constant monitor found in 1984 may exist in the near future. Moreover, Orwell also critiques censorship found in today’s world. There are many examples of extreme censorship found in Oceania. For example, on the telescreens, figures for all types of production are extremely exaggerated to indicate an ever-growing economy, when the reality is the opposite. This is just one of the many ways the party censors details to its citizens. Orwell may have included this extreme censorship in 1984 as a way to critique the censorship prevalent in society today. Although the censorship found in today’s society may be less significant and widespread as the censorship found in 1984, it is still an extremely effective way to demonstrate the use censorship and its effect on people. To summarize, George Orwell uses the telescreen as a way to critique the lack of privacy today’s society has and also uses extreme censorship as a way to critique the smaller forms of censorship found in the world today, both of...

...Future Technology A future technology I would like to become reality would have to be a suspended state incarceration system. Like Star Wars, the use of a technology in a fictional world, allowed prisoners to be frozen and unfrozen. This brings up the idea that it may be inhumane, taking away a person’s life freedom. They will not be given a chance to think about their crime. I propose that it is only used on the most violent offenders or high risk to endanger others or themselves. In Star Wars, Han Solo, a galactic smuggler, was frozen in carbonite and given to Jabba the Hutt as a prisoner and a trophy. I do not condone people being trophies, but sometimes the worst of the worst should be condemned without the ability to do harm. People are clever and just because a violent sociopath may be behind bars, that may not stop him or her from their inability to control the need of inflicting damage upon other people. I do not personally feel people should be able to avoid their punishment if they choose to do wrong. This to me would not delay the inevitable of judgment should their crime be severe to the extent that a death sentence be carried out. Would it be inhumane to take away someone’s ability to think about what they have done? I think it would be against their human rights. It is also just, in a sense that those doing harm to other cannot continue to do harm. Suspended state incarceration may be more expensive than a normal prison, too. Medical examinations would...
