Chocolate Essay According to Kathy Wilmore, the author of “Are We Running Out of Chocolate?”, the growing demand for chocolate is creating problems across the world. One example is the increasing cost of chocolate. The chocolate demand is primarily increasing because more people in Asia can afford it (Wilmore 9). On page 9, the author states, “ In 2013, the world consumed about 77,000 more cocoa than was produced” ( Wilmore 9). This means that people ate so much chocolate that the amount made was not enough to satisfy the needs of a person. This is a serious issue and is creating problems because the demand for chocolate is higher than the supply, the cost of it will eventually rise. This then will set a trend and other products’ cost will rise.…show more content… The rise of the chocolate’s cost has set off a chain reaction. The cost of objects might increase to the point where people cannot afford to buy these delicacies. To avoid the prices of chocolate and other objects rise, the demand for chocolate must stop. Second of all, child slavery is increasing because of the chocolate demand. Child slavery is when poor families are tricked into selling their kids to buyers with untrue sayings of better lives. Instead, the children work about 100 hours a week and are abused most of the time (Wilmore 10). According to the sidebar text on page 10, “An estimated 500,000 to 1.5 million children work on cocoa farms in West Africa, according to the International Cocoa Initiative” (Wilmore 10). This implies that out of all the farms in the west part of Africa , the workers are kids 9-16. Child labor is a problem because of the ever growing demand of chocolate. The children work many hours of grueling work without getting paid or taken care of. They barely get fed and get minimal necessities and also have to work dangerous tools (Wilmore 10). Imagine this situation, a small boy in Africa is working hard and starts to use a saw. He gets distracted and the saw moves and cuts
