...ADHD: To Medicate or Not Timothy Pettigrew COM 172 June 8, 2015 Peter Conrad ADHD: To Medicate or Not When many of us think of ADHD, we think of hyper children the medication Ritalin. While there has been many other medications to stem off of Ritalin, did you know that there are also other options and choices to treating ADHD other than just medication? Most of the ADHD medications are stimulant based, therefore a lot of parents are reluctant to use them. I am going to discuss some of the other treatment options for ADHD. Some of them are cognitive behavior therapy, biofeedback or even just removing sugar from your child’s diet can help with the treatment of ADHD. Treatment with medication is the option that most people choose. This seems to be the quickest way to address the issues of the ADHD individual, whether it be a child, adolescent, or even adult. However, with most of the medications being stimulant based, a lot of parents are reluctant to put their children on medication without exploring other options first. There are however, other drugs that are non-stimulant that work in the same way, but these medications take longer to build up in the body and notice the effects of the medication. The first thing to understand is exactly what the medications for ADD and ADHD can and can’t do and to know that it isn’t a magic pill that will fix all of your or your Childs’ problems. Medication can help reduce the symptoms of hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and impulsivity but they also come with many risks. The negative effects of stimulant medication in children with ADHD are staggering; however, there is a natural approach that can be just as effective. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is a neurological disorder characterized by developmentally inappropriate impulsivity, inattention, and in some cases, hyperactivity. It is estimated by the American Psychiatric Association in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) that 3%-7% of school-aged children have ADHD1. ADHD is characterized by many symptoms including the following: • Poor concentration, distractibility, impulsive behavior, careless mistakes, difficulty in controlling anger. • Inability to complete tasks, difficulty sustaining attention toward tasks. • Hyperactive behavior, excessive activity, fidgeting, squirming, running, climbing excessively. • Poor listening...

...inattentiveness. The debate of whether or not children are being over diagnosed has been ongoing for years. As a parent do you medicate your child and follow the physician’s advice? Only if you have studied up on the medications that are being used to treat this condition and the side effects associated with each drug. There are also many alternative solutions to try before starting your child on medication. I believe that too often parents have a normal child, perhaps a little curious or hyperactive and since this child isn’t like their other children the parents determine that something must be wrong with them. A quick trip to the doctor and discussion can quickly confirm ADHD and the child are then placed on medication. We know that an increase of commercials ad on television relating to medications to treat disorders has caused an increase in people seeking treatment for various conditions and I believe the same has happened for ADHD. Petrochko (2013), state that the rate of ADHD diagnosis has increased nearly 25% over the past decade. The biggest increase was in white, black and Hispanic groups and seems to be more prevalent with families that earn $70,000 or more annually. Rowland & Salvatore (1999), state that ADHD may be over diagnosed and drugs used to treat this condition may be overprescribed. ...When a child starts school, that experience is an eye-opener for parents. At that time, they see their child’s development and behavior in comparison with other children. Most of their ‘problems’ arise from the fact that they process emotional and intellectual information somewhat differently from ‘normal’ children (Wrights Law). Children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may exhibit symptoms as early as the age of six or seven but sometimes even sooner. Children with ADD suffer in many ways if their condition is not diagnosed and is left untreated. They tend to be more inattentive, careless, unorganized and also impulsive. ADD has symptoms that affect concentration and a child’s ability to focus (Native Remedies). ADD can also cause mood swings and other social problems. Children with ADD should receive treatment in the form of counseling and the appropriate medication so the child can have a more ‘normal’ and happy childhood. Usually, ADD symptoms will appear over the course of many months rather than all at once. If the appearance of these symptoms is not managed correctly, it can lead to low self-esteem and other behavioral problems in the years to come. Deciding on what ADD/ADHD medication is best fit for the child can be difficult, but doing your homework helps. The first thing to understand is exactly what the medications for ADD and ADHD can and cannot do. ADD medication may help improve the child’s...

...power to deal with day to day problems. Medicalization can be defined as the way in which human problems become defined and treated as medical problems (Sadler, Jotterand et al. 2009). Medicalization is often viewed as a ‘bad’ thing, however Peter Conrad argues that it is a neutral term (Parens 2011). However today the term medicalization is usually used in criticism of medicalization, perhaps over-medicalization would be more appropriate, and the term medicalization kept neutral, simply humans problems being treated as medical ones, whether beneficial or not. In the early days of the examination of medicalization it became clear that some of the main powers driving and facilitating this phenomenon were medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies. The power and authority of the medical professionals was an important force of medicalization (Conrad 2005). Their influence can be seen in the treatment of menopause, childbirth and child abuse (Conrad 2005). Writings by Ivan Illich, Michelle Foucault and R.D Laing raised awareness and concern about medical concepts, procedures and power; they highlighted medicalization as a bad thing for our society and suggested that a change was needed in order to regain power in regards to our lives and human problems (Sadler, Jotterand et al. 2009). Social movements and interest groups also gave root to medicalization, the 'alcoholic’s movement' and Alcoholics Anonymous being a prime example (Conrad 2005). In more recent examinations...
