There are so many situations and circumstances that require everyday people to deal with adjustments. This paper will be based on evidence-based strategies to help with adjustments. The first article is about two men, one African American and the other Caucasian, who come together to co-author a book on a subject that is headlining the news today; white police officers shooting or beating black boys. The second article is about the age difference of people who get the influenza vaccine and those that do not. Karen Bates is, the author of the article, “All American Boys’: A Young Adult Book about Police Beating and A Hard Choice, (2015).” In her article, she discusses the authors’ reason behind the publication of this book. The co-authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, decide to write this book after two shootings which took place here in the United States. The first instance that sparked the writing of the book took place in the state of Florida; where George Zimmerman (a Caucasian man) was acquitted of murdering Trayvon Martin (an African-American boy). In this case, Zimmerman never denied shooting Martin, but said he did it in self-defense (Greg Botelho and Holly Yan, CNN, 2013). The second instance took place in Missouri; when Michael Brown (an African American) was killed in Ferguson by Darren Wilson (a Caucasian police officer). In this case Officer Wilson shot Brown six times after a presumed confrontation (Matt Pearce, LA Times, 2014). As a result of these two instances, “All American Boys,” was written. “All American Boys,” is a story about racial profiling and police brutality (“All American boys,” 2015). An African-American boy is beaten by a Caucasian police officer; the incident is captured on video tape: and has

Adjustment Case Study

...Adjustment Case Study PSY 100 Tiffany McKenzie Dysheka Barber December 16, 2015 Adjustment Case Study In this paper I will give the summaries of two stories retrieved from NPR’s StoryCorps Website. I will then identify and describe the major adjustment issues present in each story. Next I will examine a few strategies that could be used by the individuals in the stories to help them adjust. Finally, I will recommend the best strategy, in my opinion, that they should use in their respective situations. Article One The first article I chose is called, “Caught Between Their Dying Parents, Daughters Find Comfort in A Lie.” This is the story of a father two, Roger Bessey, who is diagnosed with AIDS in the late 1980’s. Bessey had been married for 38 years to wife Christine who was diagnosed with AIDS soon after he was. Turns out that although Mr. Bessey had lived a heterosexual life in public he was actually a guy man and had been living a double life for 27 years. Once this was revealed his marriage to Christine ended. Bessey’s daughters, Claudia Anton and Diana Keough, discuss what it was like to watch their father die and how they wanted to give him peace before he went. "We actually called Mom, and we asked her if she would just speak to him for a minute. And she refused," Keough says. "So we actually pretended, and we told dad that mom had just called and she said that she had forgiven him (“Caught between their”, 2015)." Their...

Adjustment Case Study

...------------------------------------------------- Assignment 2: Adjustment Case Study KF November 29, 2015 Psychology of adjustment November 29, 2015 Psychology of adjustment My adjustment case study examines two articles from NPR’s Story Corps. In the first article, Teresa Valko describes the painful process and adjustment of watching her mother Evelyn Wilson being slowly consumed by the memory destroying disease, Alzheimer’s. The second article discusses Vietnam veteran Barry Romo and his nephew of the same age Robert Romo. Barry Romo enlisted in the army with the intent to fight in the Vietnam war, and his nephew Robert, who has no intent or desire to go to war ends up being drafted to Barry’s brigade and ultimately killed in battle. Barry feels guilty to this day for not being able to save his nephew. The major adjustment issues in Teresa Valko’s story were that she was losing her mother while her mother is still living. Seeing her mother forget simple things like what she had for dinner, watching her forget her favorite things like flowers and gardening. Eventually her mother Evelyn couldn’t remember the names of her favorite plants and flowers, or the names of the colors to describe them. And there is the issue that there is a high probability according to family history, that she herself will develop the disease. The major adjustment issues in the Romo’s story are that Robert Romo was drafted to war, to his uncle Barry’s brigade, under Barry’s...

... Bierstaker, Thomas F. Monahan, and Michael F. Peters ABSTRACT: Many students have not spent much time studying or contemplating the importance of non-GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) earnings to the ‘‘Street.’’ Based on the facts of an actual company and utilizing the financial information drawn from this company’s 10-K and Earnings Release, this case introduces students to the strengths and weaknesses of GAAP and non-GAAP earnings measures, and why the Street might be more interested in cash and recurring earnings in attempting to predict movements in stock price. It also provides the instructor with an opportunity to discuss the dangers of allowing firms to emphasize earnings in their press releases that are not defined by an external authoritative body (such as the Financial Accounting Standards Board [FASB]), and how this can hurt the consistency and reliability of reporting. This is an important discussion, since regulators have recently formally proposed to include non-GAAP measures in their overhaul of the auditor reporting model (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board [PCAOB] 2011). The case also familiarizes students with current auditing guidelines dealing with the going concern decision and the potential role that non-GAAP earnings can play in this decision. Thus, the three primary learning objectives are to teach students: (1) to apply going concern audit standards, (2) about the potential role of non-GAAP earnings in this decision—especially as...

...Case study By Kevin Whelan Axia College of University of Phoenix PSY 210 Dean Marzofka January 11, 2011 Final Project: Case Study What are the causes of stress in Michael’s or Jennifer’s life? How is stress affecting Michael’s or Jennifer’s health? I chose to analyze the second case study, Michael the airline pilot, as I am in the same line of work, (aviation), I hope to be able to relate to the subjects symptoms, behaviors and anxieties and be able to relate positive and practical analysis and possible recommendations for coping with the anxieties of life in the profession of aviation. The primary stressors in Michael’s life are most likely a combination of the following: Chest pain, divorce and all the legal technicalities like paper work and the emotional implications, the end of a long marriage and loss of a close friend due to the commitment termination, (his wife), the difficult custody battle for his two children, ages 10 and 12, a heavy work schedule that keeps him away from his family two weeks a month, work concerns of possible lay offs in the future, the burden of a new town house in uncertain financial times, and finally, (if that all isn’t enough for one to deal with), unknown physical medical condition as a result of the increasing regularity of the chest pains. How are these stressors affecting Michael’s or Jennifer’s self-concept and self-esteem? In Michael’s case, self esteem has not been directly reflected in the case study, for instance...

...incidents that are distressing. One should consider the gender of the interviewer, special training in sensitive interviewing and privacy during the interview. The presence of a violent partner in the room where the woman is being interviewed reduces the reporting of the violence (Walby & Myhill, 2001). Dedicated surveys can also be used to research violence against women since they focus on the issue of violence against women and facilitate a further number of methodological adjustments, reduce the time spent on such questions and remove the potentially restrictive crime context. Face-to-face interviews, telephone, self-completion on a computer and using postal questionnaires can be used to conduct surveys (Walby & Myhill, 2001). Interpretive and critical frameworks Violence against women can be studied using the quantitative and qualitative methods. The qualitative method is from an interpretive framework. The qualitative method gathers information that is presented in text form through case studies, lists, narratives, descriptions and verbatim quotes. The qualitative method is more appropriate when an issue is being studied for the first time in a particular setting or when the aim is to gain understanding about a process (Jansen, n.d). The critical framework is the development of approaches that have the potential of...

...Associate Level Material Appendix D Acre Woods Retirement Community Case Study Acre Woods is a private retirement community with 275 senior residents. Its mission is to improve the quality of life of its residents through physical and emotional care. Sarah Armstrong, Acre Woods’ resident physical therapist, manages the retirement community’s activity program. Recently, Acre Woods added a pool to its rehabilitation center to facilitate resident exercise and aquatic therapy. The residents’ monthly rent was raised to help finance the pool. After the pool was constructed, Sarah immediately contacted the director of Acre Woods, Mark Adams, with concerns that the pool did not meet some important specifications included in the original design, such as nonslip treads on the stairs and improved wheelchair access to the pool area. Mark advised Sarah that the residents would be happy to have a pool, even if it did not incorporate all the requested special features. When Sarah asked why the new ramp and stair treads were not provided even though they were included in the budget, the director remarked that Sarah’s job was to provide physical therapy, not to worry about the budget. Over the next month, four Acre Woods residents had minor falls using the pool stairs. While the accidents were not serious, other residents began to express fears about using the pool. Sarah contacted Mark again to relate resident complaints and to stress the need for pool accessibility and safety improvements...
