...ork2012 - 2013 Catalog A Message from the President “Sullivan University is truly a unique and student success focused institution.” I have shared that statement with numerous groups and it simply summarizes my basic philosophy of what Sullivan is all about. When I say that Sullivan is “student success focused,” I feel as President that I owe a definition of this statement to all who are considering Sullivan University. First, Sullivan is unique among institutions of higher education with its innovative, career-first curriculum. You can earn a career diploma or certificate in a year or less and then accept employment while still being able to complete your associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree by attending during the day, evenings, weekends, or online. Business and industry do not expand or hire new employees only in May or June each year. Yet most institutions of higher education operate on a nine-month school year with almost everyone graduating in May. We remained focused on your success and education, and continue to offer our students the opportunity to begin classes or to graduate four times a year with our flexible, year-round full-time schedule of classes. If you really want to attend a school where your needs (your real needs) come first, consider Sullivan University. I believe we can help you exceed your expectations. Since words cannot fully describe the atmosphere at Sullivan University, please accept my personal invitation to visit and experience...

...Critical Thinking Application Paper University of Phoenix MGT 350 Oretha Johnson The purpose of this paper is to provide an example from personal experience in applying critical thinking to a work-related decision, and the importance and benefits of critical thinking in the decision-making processes. Using a work related decision and personal experience, conveying the importance of critical thinking in this decision-making process will reveal itself in the form of a question, and an opinion (Wilder, 2001). Critical thinking is the mode of thinking about a problem, subject or content in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them (Paul & Elder, 2006). The court system is a demanding industry and requires a great deal of critical thinking. I retired in March 2012 as the Administrative Coordinator of Operations for the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office. This job had high-level responsibilities and authority as well as tough decision making. I used critical thinking as a measuring rod and a means of making effective decisions. There was an employee on my team that was not performing her job duties. She was a likable person and was favored by the boss. On another note, she was experiencing challenges at home and with her health. I had to find a logical reason for the cause of the problem, in terms of her work performance. My findings...

...Controls Launched in September 2013, the Office of Administration, Logistics Management Division’s Virtual Site Visit (VSV) program is a comprehensive review of an office’s compliance with policies and procedures in the Logistics Management areas of operation. It is intended to reduce the number of findings from audits, Inspectors General reports and other internal and external reviews of compliance. It replaces the traditional physical site assistance visit in a time of dwindling travel budgets, while enabling Office of Administration to continue one-on-one engagement with agency offices. To date, we have conducted 18 VSV’s, with a slate of eight underway for FY 2016. To develop the program, we reviewed every Logistics Management policy, procedure, handbook, branded form and guidance document to develop measurable performance criteria. The result is a 40-item checklist covering 14 areas of operation, including personal property, physical inventory, fleet, leased copiers and transit subsidy. Each item in the checklist features specific policy references, evaluation criteria, data sampling and/or analysis methodology and objective performance benchmarks. The program is entirely virtual, requiring no physical presence, and is managed using existing agency technologies, including the Enterprise Collaboration Network (ECN), AT&T Connect and Lync. The VSV is not an audit, rather it is a review program intended to help an agency office understand where its strengths and weaknesses...

...Cheng Yan MGT 510 Human Resource Management Stephen Young What job would you create? Why? The job that I would create would be that of administrative assistant. I would create this particular job because it would fill the void that currently exists within the company. Administrative assistants typically perform job tasks that do not really fall under any other category and work to support the office in a general manner. Administrative assistants typically have responsibilities such as making travel arrangements. However, their duties can extend beyond that to include general accounting duties, such as basic accounts receivable and payable. What are the employee competencies this position needs to be successful? Why? The employee competencies that this position needs to be successful would be attention to detail, punctuality, ability to multitask, good communication skills, and basic accounting skills. These skills are important because they are crucial in order for the candidate to be able to fulfill all of the requirements of the position. What are your ideas for how you might design performance management, compensation, and incentives for this new position? Why? In terms of performance management, I would implement a regular review process so that the employee that would be hired for this position would be able to gauge whether or not he or she is fulfilling all of the responsibilities of the position and performing up to expectations. Performance...

...Around the world, there are many highly skilled, independent thinking professionals who would rather operate a business of their own than work for someone else. These entrepreneurs start up thousands of businesses each year however, not all succeed. Statistics gathered by the National Federation of Independent Businesses reports that only 39% of new businesses in the United States finish the year making a profit. Numerous reasons exist why new businesses fail, but many new business owners find that although they are very competent in their profession, they struggle with operating a business (Klein, 1999). B-Team Consulting can help the new business owner make sure he or she winds up in the 39% group of profitable new businesses. ...Legal Process Paper University of Phoenix Shannon Stracener MGT/434 10/27/14 Jennifer Schneider Legal Process Paper John is an employee in a private sector organization and wants to file a discrimination complaint against his employer. Although the U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces Federal Laws that protect employees and applicants from employment discrimination in the work place, which includes bias in hiring, promotion, job assignment, termination, compensation, retaliation, and various types of harassment, only some types of discrimination are currently punishable through the U. S. legal system. Though anyone can file a discrimination complaint with the EEOC, John must show that he has been discriminated against because of his race, religion, national origin, disability, or age in order to receive a right-to-sue letter. Filing a Charge of Discrimination As an employee in the private sector, if John isn’t sure whether or not his employer is covered, he should contact one of the EEOC field offices as soon as possible and they can make that decision. Even if John’s employer is not covered by the laws that the EEOC enforces, his employer may still be covered by a state or local agency that enforces that law. The EEOC can refer John to the appropriate state or local agency that enforces anti-discrimination laws. “Through its administrative enforcement process, the Commission receives, investigates, and resolves charges of employment...
