Advanced Research course emphasized, first of all, taking into account the stakeholders’ perspectives while doing needs assessment. Designing tools/services/social programs in completely different geographical and/or socioeconomic context than the context of our target population and expecting them to be effective there is illogical.
For Advanced Research class my group’s competency assignment was to create a single-case design for a nine-year-old Hispanic male, who has grown up witnessing domestic violence between his parents. I also conducted extensive research on play therapy that can be employed as an age-appropriate strategy in situations where a child is unable to articulate his or her feelings and thoughts. Finally, I learned more about kinship placements which allow children placed out of their homes to remain in a familiar environment, causing the least disruption to their education and making family separations less traumatic.
In addition, I believe that in my future career the knowledge of a process and formative evaluations may also be useful. Formative evaluation assesses if programs or interventions are well formed. It also focuses on adjusting and enhancing programs and interventions by identifying existing problems. Process evaluation additionally determines the reasons for achieving or not achieving expected outcomes. Without process evaluation, the fit of the program, its delivery and context cannot be determined. I also learned how crucial feedback received from stakeholders is for both kinds of evaluations.
