For 300 years, European countries traded for slaves, gold and ivory along the coast of Africa. In the 1800’s, Africa was under full assault as European nations competed with one another for control of the continent. Some of the driving forces toward this control was technology, power, and land.
Technology was one reason for control. In Document C, in the chart it states the steam engine was first used in boats, more constant and forceful source of power than sails on ships or horse-drawn carriages. Steam engines powered ships and railroads. This shows that the resources Europe needed to build the engine was from Africa and this could be a reason every country is fighting for it, because Africa is carrying all the resources the country’s need
