MALE INITIATION PRACTICE
When young boys reached puberty they were sent to an initiation school for boys that marked the passage from boyhood to manhood. For one to be regarded as a man, earn respect and the privileges in the affairs of the society he had to go for this infamous rite. Youngman are taught life skills and how to respect other people, but there is still more to it though, traditional circumcision. I remember back in the days during my social studies class when my teacher took us through the history of this infamous activity, about how passionate people were with this activity. This is an initiation rite that started back in 1902 and was later abandoned until the 1970s till the last were performed in 1990. It was back again in 2009 early May. This transition of reviving this initiation rite was caused by the current social problems and challenges brought by globalization. This activity was done only by one of the most popular tribe in Botswana, and when you talk about that group this initiation rite click really quick into your head. The Bakgatla as they are known respects this event and the whole village will come together to witness this cultural activity. People from all corners of the Botswana are free to attend and witness. Last year it really attracted so many people that it was even aired on television. The traditional paramount chief would gather his people at the kgotla (community council or traditional law court).

I was among the multitude of people who thronged the Bakgatla main Kgotla to witness the procession of male initiation which was abandoned 20 years ago. I got at the place at around 8am because I had to drive all the way from the capital city Gaborone and the place was already fully packed with people who came to grace the event. Some people said they had journeyed to the Kgotla as early as 4am to occupy prime spectator spots. Two giant screens were erected to allow those who couldn’t access the venue to watch the proceedings. I was so surprised when I even saw white people and a couple of Chinese too. That really showed how important the event was. Different tribes, young and old were there to watch one of the greatest cultural events in Botswana if not in Southern Africa. Misconduct is not tolerated whatsoever so there were people who were put in certain places to monitor the situation. Policeman and soldiers were present to provide cover whenever it gets ugly.
The venue was fully packed with thousands of women who, according to Bakgatla tradition must welcome the graduating males with songs and ululations. These were the young women who had successfully graduated from their initiation earlier.
The moment everybody was waiting for came at around 10am, when the largest group of Bakgatla initiates emerged from a sacred place called Molapo, in the hills adjacent to the village’s hospital. All these young men emerged with cultural coats made from wild animal skins and each one of them had a traditional whip. The traditional whip is only carried by people who had gone for the initiation school and it shows that indeed you have been transformed from a boy into being a man. I was shocked when I even saw one of the initiates looking like he was 12 years old and indeed he was. The paramount chief of the Bakgatla led the procession on horseback. Everyone’s attention was caught by the majestic tricks performed by the horse during the one hour procession.
The chief was dressed in pure brown leather pants and traditionally made sandals. He had on his back a cheetah skin, it was so beautiful. The initiates wore shorts and put on shoes without socks. Gun shots were fired as the initiates reached the kgotla. In dramatic fashion, three men who played the role of ‘enemies’ threw themselves down as the guns were fired, symbolizing that the initiate had graduated into full age regiment to defeat Bakgatla foes. Ululations got louder and louder as the initiates got closer to the Kgotla.
The media world was busy too as photographers were busy taking pictures, this was one of the events that you couldn’t afford to miss by the lens. Fortunately I was one of the people who had their camera phones.
Then it was time for everybody to take their respective places as the initiates had finally arrived at the Kgotla. The Kgotla as it is called refers to a public meeting, community council or traditional law court. It is made up of dry wood erected together to make an arc, inside of this arc you will find traditional wooden chair specially designed for the chief, and other few chairs for the chief’s advisors and the senior elders in the village. Whenever there are meetings at the Kgotla everyone is entitled to his or her opinion but no one may interrupt while someone is having their say. There has always been a saying that the highest form of war is dialogue and because of this tradition Botswana has become one of the world’s oldest democracies.
One of the highlights of the historic initiation ceremony was the appearance of the South African leader. He was one of the initiates although he was very busy in the morning conducting the affairs of the tribe. He took part in leading the procession, ensuring that the route taken by Kgafela and his initiates had no stumbling blocks. It was said that he was part of the group that underwent initiation in the bush in the last six weeks. His wife had taken part in the female initiation earlier in the year.
We came in to witness young man who had gone through rigorous activities like traditional circumcision. This activity is done in the wilderness were anybody can’t see these men get transformed. I was told that when they left to go for the initiation their cell phones were taken from them and switched off so that they are not tempted to use the latest technology and transmit bogwera information to outsiders. This circumcision has always raised eyebrows in the past and people had mixed emotions about it, some felt it was not healthy because knives and scissors used are not usually sterilized and they will normally use one knife on more than two people. There had been a couple of casualties reported for this act in the past. For people who are passionate about their culture they have found nothing wrong with it because they felt they were honoring their ancestors and doing what is right as far as their culture is concerned.
With the rate at which HIV/AIDS is affecting our nation, people believe that circumcision should be done to young man but how it is done leaves a lot to be desired.
Personally I feel the way it is done is not good for health but as a strong believer in African culture I think it’s a good thing to do as we keep up with our roots and it makes us be proud of who we are. I did my circumcision like three years back at a private hospital and I was so amazed at how it was done, because a friend of mine who had gone to a traditional one told me how he got his foreskin removed, and when comparing the two you will find that you will be better off at the private hospital than in the wilderness.
It was time now for the paramount chief to let loose of the young man and pronounce them real man. Family and friends of all those young man were there to welcome their loved ones. It was an emotional welcome from some of the families because in the past one will not be really sure whether one of their own will come back in one piece, this concern was caused by the fact that people died in the past after being circumcised
Three thousand young- man attended this initiation but only one thousand five hundred and seventy one graduated. These figures shows that it was not just about going to have your foreskin removed, you had to go through a lot of things and you were taught about life skills and how to conduct yourself in public and take care of your family in the future.
The event was finally over and the master of ceremonies had to say his last words and people were free to go to their respective places and the media people had to interview people and find out their reaction on the just ended big activity in the history of the Bakgatla. One will now have to ask him/her self when will the next initiation be, because with what had happened in the past when this practice was abandoned people don’t really know if they will have the chance to witness the great culture of the Bakgatla again.
Personally I feel this kind of circumcision should be abolished totally because it is not really good for mankind. Firstly it’s not healthy and secondly it can lead to too much bleeding thus could cause death or end up leaving people with the inability of having to produce children.
Looking at how Bakgatla are passionate about their culture and as an African child, I feel they should just continue this practice but would encourage them to adopt some safety precautions when performing the circumcision surgery. They should involve the health department so that they avoid further deaths and injuries in the near future.
The first president of Botswana once said a society without its culture is just lost.
This was one of the most diversified events I have ever seen and it really interested me because for the first time ever people from other tribes thronged the Bakgatla village to witness the way they do things and how passionate they are.

Secrecy Surrounding the Practice of Female Circumcision in Mabvuku and Tafara Surburbs

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Female circumcision is a traditional practice performed on girl children as part of initiation rituals into adulthood. This inquiry seeks to demystify the secretiveness surrounding this practice, seeking to establish the reasons why female circumcision remains a taboo subject. In doing so, the researcher will attempt to establish the local community’s perception of female circumcision and elucidate some of the reasons practitioners cite as benefits of female circumcision. The research focuses on Mabvuku and Tafara suburbs because there are people of different ethnic groups with varying customs and values that shape their behaviour and way of life. Mabvuku and Tafara have an unusually high concentration of people of Malawian, Mozambican and Zambian origin who migrated to seek work mostly before the Zimbabwean independence. Due to this diversity, women and girls who have undergone female circumcision were interviewed. Mabvuku is a high-density suburb some seventeen kilometres east of Harare. It is classified as a suburb or township of Harare, with the Harare City Council constituting local government. This inquiry is exploratory, descriptive and qualitative in nature, based on interviews with women who had undergone the practice in Mabvuku-Tafara. The inquiry can be termed therefore, a qualitative research done through a case study design. This research method is preferred because the researcher is exploring a subjective understanding of social reality...

Teenage Pregnancy In South Africa

...This essay will take a position that teenage sexuality does not contribute to the escalating occurrences of teenage pregnancy in the South African context. It will use theory to explain and support the position that has been chosen while also giving examples. Escalating occurrences of teenage pregnancy is a broad social issue and remains to increase in percentages though there are awareness campaigns, adverts and motivational speakers who visit schools annually. This shows that individuals do not acquire new skills unless they are interested or motivated to do so (Vygotsky, 1929). A teenager is someone who is in the middle stage of life, he or she is not considered young or a grown up person (Coon & Mitterer, 2012). Teenagers begin from the...

...Decrease the HIV/STI Risk Behaviors of African American Youth: Can We Control Future Trends? Beatrice Simiyu Capstone Project Dr. Bruce Johnson    Abstract As a result of the need to recognize successful human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI) interventions tailored for African American youth, a literature review of six HIV/STI randomized controlled trials interventions targeting African American youth conducted in the United States were evaluated. A comparative analysis was used; the settings, procedures and outcomes of the different interventions targeting African American youth were compared, contrasted and combined to ultimately identify trends that are likely to initiate and possibly sustain change in HIV/STI risk behaviors among African American youth who are a vulnerable group. Variables were evaluated by the various intervention impacts on reducing sexual risk behaviors by an indication of a delay in first sexual intercourse, a decline in the number of sex partners and frequency of sex, and increase in condom use and a reduction in positive STI outcomes. Outcomes were used to facilitate identification of public health strategies that might be most beneficial in targeting African American youth and pinpoint what manner current public health strategies neglects to focus on their needs. The research and practice implications of the findings imply that enhancing future HIV/STI targeting African American youth necessitates the prioritization...

Culture of South Africa

...establishment of the first colonial outpost of the Dutch East India Company at Cape Town in 1652, South Africa became a society officially divided into colonizer and native, white and nonwhite, citizen and subject, employed and indentured, free and slave. The result was a fragmented national identity symbolized and implemented by the white minority government's policy of racial separation. Economic status has paralleled political and social segregation and inequality, with the black African, mixed-race ("Coloured"), and Indian and Pakistani ("Asian") population groups experiencing dispossession and a lack of legal rights. Since the first nonracial elections in 1994, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has attempted to overcome this legacy and create unified national loyalties on the basis of equal legal status and an equitable allocation of resources. Location and Geography. South Africa has an area of 472,281 square miles (1,223,208 square kilometers). It lies at the southern end of the African continent, bordered on the north by Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Swaziland; on the east and south by the Indian Ocean; and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The independent country of Lesotho lies in the middle of east central South Africa. Among the prominent features of the topography is a plateau that covers almost two thirds of the center of the country. The...

Adolesects and Physical Changes

...thinking to change in relationship to others as well as to themselves (Vander Zanden, 2000).   Physical Development The onset of puberty occurs in this time of life. Puberty is the beginning stage into adulthood but children must go through many changes through the journey. Adolescences oftentimes find this stage of development dramatic. Females may find this time more dramatic than males. “Girls who have been advanced in physical maturity since the prenatal period, reach puberty, on average, two years earlier than boys” (Berk, 2010, p. 363). Both male and female adolescences experience growth spurts through this time frame, which is the first outward sign of the onset of puberty. Hormone levels increase in both males and females. Female begin to develop breast and pubic hair begins to grow. This is the time females normally start their menstruation cycle. Males develop pubic and facial hair at this time. Male’s penis and testes begin to enlarge also. The male voice becomes deeper as he advances in puberty. Females are normally done growing physically by age 16 whereas males continue growing physically until around age 17 1/2 (Berk, 2010, p. 363). Factors such as physical health, environment, and heredity play a role in the development of children and the onset of puberty.  Cognitive Development Not all changes that...

Distress and Alcolhol

...Psychosocial Distress and Alcohol Use as Factors in Adolescent Sexual Behavior Among Sub-Saharan African Adolescents RANDY M. PAGE, PhDa COUGAR P. HALL, PhDb ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: This study examines the relationship between sexual behavior, alcohol use, and indicators of psychosocial distress (mental health) of adolescents in 6 sub-Saharan African countries using the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS). METHODS: The sample consisted of 22,949 adolescents from Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe who participated in 2003 or 2004 GSHS surveys. Statistical analysis was conducted to determine whether sexual behaviors increased with levels of psychosocial distress and alcohol use. RESULTS: Sexual behaviors (having sex or having sex with 2 or more people) were associated with both psychosocial distress and alcohol use. Odds ratios showed that both boys and girls reporting psychosocial distress and alcohol use were at higher risk for having sex. Results also indicated that the likelihood of sexual behaviors increased when there was an increase in the number of psychosocial indicators and frequency of alcohol consumption. CONCLUSION: The results of this study are consistent with those conducted in the United States suggesting that sexual behavior, psychosocial distress, and substance use are interconnected. These findings highlight the need for school health education and health services in sub-Saharan Africa, specifically the efforts to reduce...

Premarital Sex

...1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Sexually transmitted diseases Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) amongst adolescents are a worldwide growing health problem. Approximately one million people contract sexually transmitted infections every day and 50% of them are adolescents aged 15-24 years (Lazarus, Sihvonen-Riemenschneider, Laukamm-Josten, Wong & Liljestrand, 2010). STDs include many different sexually transmittable infectious diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital herpes, human papilloma virus (HPV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and syphilis. An STD is transmitted through vaginal, oral and anal sexual contact as well as through blood products. STDs can also be transmitted from mother to child during childbirth. Untreated chlamydia and gonorrhoea can lead to salpingitis for women and to epididymitis for men, which can affect fertility and in worst case lead to sterility. Hepatitis B, genital herpes, HPV and HIV are still incurable infections. HPV can lead to cervical cancer and HIV to premature death. The only way to protect oneself from contracting an STD is consistent condom use (Vårdguiden, 2011). Another term that is used in the literature is STI (sexually transmitted infection), which refers to the infection itself, whereas STD, which is the term that will be used in this paper, refers to the disease caused by an infection (TeenHealthFX, 2009). 1.2 Knowledge of STDs among adolescents A study based in Northern Thailand by Paz-Bailey et al. (2003) showed that...

Fraternities and Sororities

...college students to develop their skills and appreciate their interests with peers whom they call and consider brothers or sisters. Being part of a Greek society poses a number of advantages to individuals that are in their college years. Membership in a fraternity or sorority gives students the opportunity to meet new people and enjoy college life while still excelling academically. These organizations provide greater fields for their members to excel in what they do best and discover more things and gain more knowledge about themselves. These Greek organizations present wider social and career networking thus making school and employment easier for their members. But while Greek societies present such number of advantages, the brotherhood or sisterhood also has its own set of disadvantages especially for new recruits, pledges and neophytes. Cases of abusive initiation rites, criminal behaviors and sexual assaults are frequently acquainted to the concept of Greek societies most especially fraternities. Due to these Greek societies are also frequently condemned but in truth Greek societies are also human where in some are good for these societies are organized to create benevolent leaders of the future and some bad where what is given importance is the “cool now” and not the “bright future.” The public is usually aware of the negatives rather than the positives of Greek life and one’s awareness especially teens are based on public opinion....
