...Open Skies, An Unfair Advantage The Open Skies agreements between the United States and other countries is intended to expand international flights by eliminating governmental interference in commercial airline decisions. The goal is to free the air carrier from government control so they may provide more affordable, convenient and efficient air service to consumers. The end result is to promote increase travel, generate new economic revenue for United States (U.S.) cities and provide better economic growth for air carriers. But, with virtually unlimited access to the U.S. market through more than 100 Open Skies agreements the U.S. has signed with other countries. Foreign air carriers have unfair advantage in the open market over U.S. air carriers. Therefore, limiting those types of flights to a fifty percent increase of their current market share into the U.S. will help level the playing field and protect U.S. interests. The Joint Committee delegation will argue that unlimited flights flown into the U.S. is beneficial to all parties. It is their contention that unlimited access is essential to all partners’ markets and their profitability (U.S.-EU). The goal, in this open market, is to make it possible for all air carriers to offer the traveling public competitive pricing and services. The Joint Committee has taken the necessary steps by working with each member’s government to insure that no one air carrier has an unfair advantage. Many believe they have the right to fly to...

...United Airlines: “Fly the Friendly Skies” In 1965 Leo Burnett created the iconic tagline for United Airlines that would remain in use for the next 31 years.[1] The tagline - “Fly the Friendly Skies” would go on to remain the company’s slogan until 1996. The slogans that followed included “It’s time to Fly” in 2004 and “Let’s fly together” in 2010. However, in September 2013, United Airlines announced they would be bringing back the “Fly the Friendly Skies” slogan to show their commitment and dedication to customer satisfaction. Interestingly enough, this change in slogans and renewed devotion to consumer interests comes after an onslaught of complaints, dissatisfied customers and a barrage of YouTube videos scrutinizing the airlines commitment to customer service. The revitalized “Fly the Friendly Skies” campaign launched in September 2013, is United Airlines largest marketing campaign in more than a decade. [2] The new campaign includes radio, cable television commercials, magazine, newspaper, billboard and social media ads. United Airlines’ senior vice president of marketing – Tom O’Toole said that “'Flyer-friendly' resonated in feedback from customers and co-workers," he went on to say, "Our new brand campaign expresses the customer focus of all of United's investments." 2 Tom O’ Toole was also quoted saying that the airline returned to the old slogan, because it wanted to “Re-establish United’s position as the world’s leading customer-focused airline,”...

...when comparing the flight time between Sky West (OO) and Virgin airlines (VX)? To answer this question, two randomly sampled groups were used to collect data for a two-sample test to conduct a hypothesis which would provide an answer about the mean. I will compare the means of Sky West and Virgin America Airline flight time between San Francisco and Dallas Fort Worth and compare them. I expect the test to reveal the airline with the fastest flight times between the two cities. Population The population that I intend to study is Sky West and Virgin Airlines. I will compare the two airlines and determine whether it’s faster to fly from San Francisco to Dallas Fort Worth using the air time in this T-test. Variables The two sample T test will use the air times variable for either Sky west Airlines or Virgin Airline to fly from San Francisco, California (SFO) airport to Dallas Fort Worth, Texas (DFW) airport. Data Collection Data for this T test was collected from a file generated on the Research and Innovative Technology Administration Bureau of Transportation Statistics website, between two airlines, Sky West Airline and Virgin America Airlines flight between (SFO) San Francisco, CA International Airport and (DFW), Dallas Forth Worth Texas International Airport, and the difference between them to include the total air times which I used randomly for this test. I randomly selected 50 of 100 samples of total air times from each carrier list and tested...

...How Planes Stay Up In the Air I remember a picnic with Becky, my girlfriend, at Maidu Park five years ago. We lied on the lush green turf and held hands as we watched the clouds drift by. We were captivated and intrigued by the definitions in the clouds as we matched them to shapes of animals and other objects. She pointed towards a blanket of clouds on the right and said, “There! That one looks like a dragon.” Right at that moment, a plane flew right above us as it cut through clouds. She quickly sat up and followed the plane with her head. Her eyes widened and her eyebrows shot up as she burst out, “Wow! How do you think it stays up in the sky like that?” As any mischievous thirteen year old would, I simply the magic dust and invisible angels carried the plane on their backs. She laughed and called me stupid for not knowing the answer. However, now as a college student embarking towards my future, I made my personal goal to be a pilot and learn about planes. I got accepted to Embry Riddle, an aeronautical school in Arizona, straight out of high school. Although the fear of planes falling out of sky held me back; so I decided study at Sierra College until I’m ready. Sean palmer, a sophomore at Sierra College, flys planes for a hobby. He pointed out that, “Flying a plane is not like driving a car, it’s far more complicated, but at the same time fun… I fly almost every week, but it’s little expensive to rent planes. So, I’m saving up for my own Cessna 120 for almost two years...

...As the truck starts going faster down the road, rocks are slung into the air off the tires. Stirring up a big cloud of dust that blurred all vision behind us. Swirling like a tornado, the dust followed behind until we reached our final destination. I hopped out of the truck, grabbed my gun out of the bed, threw it over my shoulder, and started walking out to the cornfield. Crunch! Crunch! Crunch! Was the loudest sound around, as our boots smashed the dried out corn stalks into the ground. In the far distance you could hear the sound of an old tractor, followed by cows, chickens, and horses. Oh, and lets not forget the annoying “heehaaww!” Coming from the obnoxious donkey that lives down the next road over. Still walking to find the perfect spot to sit and wait for those doves to fly over, we finally come to a spot way back in a corner. Where there was a big patch of corn that hadn't been plowed down yet. We came to a little patch of corn had been pushed down, making the perfect sitting spot. As I sat down I noticed tons of gun shells lying on the ground. I looked over at Tyler and said “We’re gonna kill some today, I can feel it!” Looking back, smiling he replied “I bet you fifty bucks I'll bring home more doves than you.” I burst out a loud “HA you're on!” As we shook hands to seal the deal. I continued to look up into the blue sky for that one little dove to fly...

...Accordingly, it's become painless for someone to get their private pilot's license. By getting yours, you'll be able to take joy rides with your friends and family, take part in volunteer search and rescue missions, fly yourself to business meetings, and become an acrobat of the sky. Okay, maybe not. But here's how to get that precious license. requirements First of all, you must be at least 16 years old to get your student pilot certificate. You'll need to be 17 in order to receive the regular pilot's license. There's no age limit for you to fly, as long as you qualify medically. You must be in great health. Everyone who wants to be a pilot needs to pass a medical exam in the early stages of the process. Blind people with narcolepsy don't usually make good pilots. More on this topic later. Finally, you must have an adequate grasp of the English language, being able to read, speak and understand it perfectly (English is the international language used by all airports and control towers in the world). license Even though everyone refers to this piece of paper as a license, the technical term is, in fact, certificate . However, only the FAA calls it that. Getting your private pilot's license will allow you to fly under certain restrictions. You'll be able to fly a single-engine airplane under visual flight rules (VFR) -- which means with a visibility of at...

...Air traffic control: a world-class juggling act case exercise Air traffic controllers have one of the most stressful jobs in the world. They are responsible for the lives of thousands of passengers who fly every day in and out of the worlds airports. Over the last 15 years, the number of planes in the sky has doubled, leading to congestion at many airports and putting air traffic controllers under increasing pressure. The controllers battle to maintain separation standards that set the distance between planes as they land and take off. Sheer volume pushes the air traffic controllers skills to limit. Jim Courtney, an air traffic controller at LaGuardia Airport in New York, says: there are half a dozen moments of sheer terror in each year when you did something else for a living. New York – the worlds busiest airspace The busiest airspace in the world is above New York. Around 7500 planes arrive and depart each day at new yorks three airports, John F. Kennedy , LaGuardia and Newark. The three airports form a triangle around Newyork and are just 15 miles from each other. This requires careful coordination of traffic patterns, approach and take-off routes, using predetermined corridors in the sky to keep the planes away from each others. If the wind changes, all three airports work together to change the flight paths. Sophisticated technology fitted to most of the bigger planes creates a safety zone around the aircaraft so that when two aircrafts...

...Asian Low Cost Airlines A Strategic Management Analysis Analysis is made from Strategic Alliances between Batch 20 and Batch 21 of SGU MBA Program Written by YopieRissa Pahlawan Arfianto RiaHutari RonyHariadi If you get your passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make darn sure they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline. Rollin King and Herb Kelleher, founder of Southwest Airlines in 1971 SECTION 1 – Budget and Low Cost Airlines 1.1. Budget Airlines The original concept of budget airlines is basically outsourced business. It puts together other businesses into and integrates those separate businesses into a form of operation and put effort to create a brand. Basically, it will try to minimize capital investments and cover it with operational expenses. And by nature of its business model, the cost structures are all variable costs, or very minimum fixed costs. With this business model, the company is not only rent the aircraft, but also outsourced its pilots, flight attendants, and other employees. It will sell tickets through agents and use service from company doing aircraft maintenance and services. And to ensure the profitability, it is critical that the operational costs, which is the main source of expenses, to be as low as possible. Therefore, it is typical that companies using this business model to use old airplanes which are close to end of the service-life...

...An air show team like the Canadian Forces Snowbirds has a lot in common with a major rock band when you think about it. Possibly the most common similarity is that neither concerts or air show perforomances would ever happen without an exceptional amount of behind the scenes work done by people who rarely share the limelight of the performances they make happen. Bands have an army of "roadies" that do all the work necessary to make sure their shows go on and the Snowbirds similarly have their own team of "roadies of the sky", the maintenance technicians that do all the work it takes to make sure the team has nine CT-114 Tutor jets ready to fly for each of the over one hundred aerobatic demonstrations and fly-pasts the team will fly for this...

...The contrail conspiracy is widely known to many people living on U.S. grounds, and is also known as the “chemtrail” theory. Many strive to prove that this theory does indeed exist, but there just isn't much plausible evidence to prove it true. Contrails, better known as chemtrails, are supposedly plane exhaust, but according to research and documents, many are saying government is actually spraying chemicals in the air for a multitude of reasons. The news of chemtrails first appeared in the 1990s when journalist William Thomas started to speculate of what he saw as “abnormal” contrails. Although much proof and suggestions lead to government spraying chemicals into our airs, much thoughts, ideas, and scientific research leads to the fact that...

...Aviation Industry Information The airline industry provides transportation services for passengers as well as cargo through scheduled air routes. The aviation industry derives its revenues from regular ticket fees and freight charges. Other major components of the aviation sector include: • Air traffic control • Helicopter and private charter services • Airport management • Express delivery service History of the Airline Industry The pioneers of the airline industry, the Wright Brothers invented the first airplane in 1903. The first modern airliner, Boeing 247, was launched in 1933. It traveled at 155 miles per hour and had a capacity of ten passengers. Boeing 747 was launched by Pan Am in 1969. This highly sophisticated aircraft had four engines and a seating capacity of 450. The airline industry initially fell under the category of a public utility service, with government agencies establishing the air routes and prices. However, with the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the industry became market driven. ...The Swing How do you like to go up in a swing, Up in the air so blue? Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing Ever a child can do! Up in the air and over the wall, Till I can see so wide, River and trees and cattle and all Over the countryside-- Till I look down on the garden green, Down on the roof so brown-- Up in the air I go flying again, Up in the air and down! Robert Louis Stevenson Because I Could Not Stop for Death( personification) Top of Form Because I could not stop for Death, He kindly stopped for me; The carriage held but just ourselves And Immortality. We slowly drove, he knew no haste, And I had put away My labour, and my leisure too, For his civility. We passed the school where children played, Their lessons scarcely done; We passed the fields of gazing grain, We passed the setting sun. We paused before a house that seemed A swelling of the ground; The roof was scarcely visible, The cornice but a mound. Since then 'tis centuries; but each Feels shorter than the day I first surmised the horses' heads Were toward eternity. The poem by Emily Dickinson "Because I could not stop for Death" is know to be one of the best poems in English. Every image extends and intensifies each other. But there are some pro and cons in this poem. The poem helps us to characterize and bring death down to a more personal level. It shows a different perspective of death that the more popular views of death being brutal and...

...ruled by the two state airlines: Air India and Indian Airlines for quite a while. Till 1990 there were very strict rules for the new entrants on operating their air taxis. No private carrier was allowed to fly more than 700 Kms at a stretch. The government disapproved the privatisation of the state airlines despite the losses incurred by them. For 40 years the 2 airlines ruled the Indian aviation industry. It was only in 1990-1991 that the “open skies” policy was introduced were scheduling restrictions were lifted from private airlines. (Mhatre, 1993) The liberalisation boosted a number of airlines in the market. Some of the early entrants were East West airlines, Modiluft, Jet airways, Air Sahara, Damania Airways etc. The private airline industry also got a boost because of the state airline pilot going on strike helped them gain customer base. In the middle of 1990s there was an opportunity for a huge expansion of air traffic in India. The government's economic survey predicted 12-14% growth. Unfortunately most of the airlines were unsuccessful either due to legal battles or a bad professional management. The two players who survived and sustained in the market were Jet Airways and Air Sahara. (Mhatre, 2000) Since 1996 Jet Airways has strengthened its spot to become the No. 1 private carrier in India, giving state-owned Indian Airlines a run for its money. (Mhatre, 1997) It continued to be the market leader with Indian airlines and Air Sahara behind. The market was slow...

...This is a story for people who follow their dreams and make their own rules; a story that has inspired people for decades. For most seagulls, life consists simply of eating and surviving. Flying is just a means of finding food. However, Jonathan Livingston Seagull is no ordinary bird. For him, flying is life itself. Against the conventions of seagull society, he seeks to find a higher purpose and become the best at doing what he loves. This is a fable about the importance of making the most of our lives, even if our goals run contrary to the norms of our flock, tribe or neighbourhood. Through the metaphor of flight, Jonathan’s story shows us that, if we follow our dreams, we too can soar. ‘Richard Bach with this book does two things. He gives me Flight. He makes me Young.
