...In 1895, Holst was introduced to Hindu philosophy and Sanskrit literature and writings. He became obsessed with the Hindu hymns and scriptures. He tried to make new hymns from these scriptures by finding English translations of the Hindu works, but he had no luck. Instead, Holst decided to teach himself Sanskrit so that he could fully use all the words to his satisfaction. His curiosity didn’t stop there, by any means. After his father’s death in 1905, a man named Clifford Bax encouraged Holst to look into astrology. Holst was so intrigued by astrology that he would even cast horoscopes for his friends and family. Ian Lace says this about Holst’s thoughts on horoscopes: “‘My pet vice!’ as he often would call it” (Lace, 2007). While studying astrology, Holst grew more fascinated with stars, heavenly bodies, and the planets in our solar system. He was inspired by the beauty of the solar system so much so that he created his famous suite, The Planets. It consisted of seven total movements, each featuring its own planet: Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Shortly after he composed The Planets in 1916, Holst created yet another magnificent piece called The Hymn of Jesus in 1917. When The Hymn of Jesus was performed live for the first time in 1920, it was a huge success. Of course, The Planets was still his most popular piece. Holst gained quite...

...The constellation that I have chosen is Cancer as known as The Crab. The reason is very simple, because Cancer is my zodiac. Cancer or The Crab the fourth astrological sign, which is associated with the constellation cancer. It spans the 90-120th degree of the zodiac, between 90 and 125.25 degree of celestial longitude. The sun transits this area on average between June 21 and July 22, and under the sidereal zodiac, the sun transits this area approximately July 16 and August 15. The symbol of this constellation is Crab. The Crab is based on Karkinos, a giant crab that bit Hercules during his fight with the Hydra. ...around asterisms, patterns formed by prominent stars within apparent proximity to one another on Earth's night sky. * The constellation Orion is one of the most recognizable in the night sky. * There are 88 standard constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) since 1922. The majority of these go back to the 48 constellations defined by Ptolemy in his Almagest (2nd century). The remaining ones were defined in the 17th and 18th century; the most recent ones are found on the southern sky, defined in Coelum australe stelliferum by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille (1763). * There are also numerous historical constellations not recognized by the IAU, or constellations recognized in regional traditions of astronomy or astrology, such as Chinese, Hindu or Austral Aboriginal. * Are the Stars in a Constellation near each other? * Not necessarily. Each constellation is a collection of stars that are distributed in space in three dimensions – the stars are all different distances from Earth. The stars in a constellation appear to be in the same plane because we are viewing them from very, very, far away. Stars vary greatly in size, distance from Earth, and temperature. Dimmer stars may be smaller, farther away, or cooler than brighter stars. By the same token, the brightest stars are not necessarily the closest. Of the stars in Cygnus, the swan, the faintest star is the closest and the brightest...

...What was Astrology’s original purpose? How has it strayed and how authentic is it? Astrology is the study of different movements and placements of celestial objects in the universe and how these objects relate to human occurrences, and other earthly events. Astrology is a study that has been practiced for over thousands of years and is one of the oldest sciences. It was first used to predict seasonal shifts (such as the rain season or the dry season) but eventually adapted into telling certain terrestrial events by one’s movements and placements. The natural world and the happenings in it were always very important to many cultures, and ancient ethnic groups, such as the Egyptians, who used the stars and planets to foreshadow what would happen in the near future, and how it would affect the land, crops, and environment. ...I am writing this essay on Gustav Holst (his original name was Gustavus Theodore von Holst). He lived from September 21, 1874, to May 25, 1934. He composed music in many genres, but is best known for his orchestral piece, The Planets. When I was in seventh grade, my band played Jupiter, which is one of the movements in Holst’s The Planets suite. This is what really sparked my interest in Holst’s music. Gustav Holst was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. His father was a professional musician. Gustav’s mother died in 1882, and his family moved to a different house. His aunt, Nina, came to help raise Gustav and his brother. Gustav learned to play the piano and violin from a young age, and took up trombone as well. His father thought that Gustav playing a brass instrument might help him with his asthma. In 1893, Holst applied for a scholarship to the Royal College of Music. He did not get it, but was accepted as a non scholarship student. He however received a scholarship in 1895, which helped him quite a bit financially. Holst played trombone professionally during his time at RCM to help support himself. In 1898, Holst moved on from the RCM, and went out to learn from playing and composing. He played trombone in many different orchestras, but his real passion was composing. As soon as he had enough money, Holst married Isobel Harrison, who he had met at the RCM. In 1903, Holst stopped playing in orchestras so that he could focus on music composition. However he did not...

...Astrology, though claiming truth, reveals its own falsity. First of all, astrology claims that each horoscope specifies only for a specific person. Just as Mr. Smit realized, however, Mrs. Johnson’s horoscope identifies not only with Mrs. Johnson, but also with Mrs. Petersen (Smit). Just based on this, how can horoscopes explain a person’s life if they explain many people’s lives? A French researcher conducted a study in order to show that people take what they deem true from the readings of horoscopes. He advertised a free horoscope reading in a newspaper. Over 150 people, unaware of the study, asked for a reading of their horoscopes. After the people received their readings back, ninety-four percent who responded stated that they could picture...

...Williams Susan Lowman-Thomas English 101 6 September 2015 The Truth about Astrology Astrology has been in existence for centuries, and its controversy over its relevance. The history of astrology began with the Babylonians, they are credited for the creation of astrology. Their astrological charts enabled them to predict the recurrence of seasons and coming celestial events. Astrology was also used to bring a sense of order out of apparent chaos, it was soon utilized to predict weather patterns, primarily for agricultural purposes. It was eventually broadened to include forecasts of natural disasters and war and other events in the course of human affairs. Amassing successes in these fields, it was a natural progression for astrology to be used as counsel for kings and emperors and in time, for all of us. “Astrology is one of the most ancient sciences, held in high esteem of old, by the wise and the great. Formerly, no prince would make war or peace, nor any general fight in battle, in short, no important affair was undertaken without first consulting an astrologer."- Benjamin Franklin Character traits of an individual are strongly effected by astrology. Learning in depth information related to astrology can help assist with relating with others. ...Numerous people confuse astrology with astronomy when they actually have several differences. Mankind's known history of the universe and today's scientific knowledge are ways to tell the two apart. Astronomy is the study of matter outside the Earth’s atmosphere. Astronomy studies the chemical and physical properties of outer space. Astrology also studies the effects of apparent influence of the stars on human life. The position and movement of stars throughout the night sky determine the effects. Although astrology and astronomy both study celestial objects, astronomy is different because astronomy studies the actual bodies and the physical effects their motions have on the Earth and other planets. Before the time of astronomy, most people believe the Earth was flat. Most cultures also believe they were in the center of the universe and all life gravitates around them. Aristarchus is one of the first people to voice his belief that the world revolves around the sun and not the other way around. People ridicule such outrageous remarks, so they disregard Aristarchus’ vision for some time. That is until around the 1500s, when Nicolaus Copernicus creates the first heliocentric model of our solar system. In this model, the sun is not the center of the model, but actually slightly off center towards one side. Galileo is extremely well known in the astronomical world. He introduces the law of time and how objects at such given distances can be easily measured by time. Galileo creates...

...The example which is going to be discussed within this essay is astrology and how horoscopes, star signs and other concepts within this affect our lives today and how people respond to them. The meaning of astrology is ‘’the ancient art or science of divining fate and future of human beings from indications and positions of the stars and other heavenly bodies’’ (Encyclopaedia Britannia, vol. 2, p. 575, 1956). Psychology helps to analyse why people check their horoscopes, why they believe in it and how they respond. The birth of psychology was when the Babylonians, they created an astrological chart which meant they could then predict when the seasons would come and also when meteor showers, comets, solar and lunar eclipses occur. Later on...

...is zodiac signs by Crystal Melbourne, a professional astrologer. I look at her Tumblr blog daily and sometimes multiple times during the day. It wasn’t until two weeks ago when I joined this class that I thought about how it can be categorized as a discourse community. A discourse community is a group of people that share a set of beliefs and understandings. In this essay, that we all as a class are required to write, I will be dissecting the different parts of this Tumblr blog that make it a discourse community. Before going too far into the rhetorical situation of this blog, I will give a little bit of background for those newbies out there who have no clue what astrology or a horoscope is. I will also give you some of the important language that will be found throughout this essay. First off, astrology is the study of the positions and relationships of the sun, moon, stars, and planets in order to judge their influence on human actions. A horoscope is a diagram of the heavens, showing the relative position of planets and the signs of the zodiac, for use in calculating births, foretelling events in a person’s life, etc. Zodiac is an imaginary belt of the heavens, extending about 8° on each side of the ecliptic, within which are the apparent paths of the sun, moon, and principal planets. It contains twelve constellations and hence twelve divisions called signs of the zodiac. The 12 signs of the zodiac are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius...

...Did you know that very zodiac sign is related to some personality disorder? Usually when we read the horoscope we focus on the good sides that our sign has and honestly most of the articles focus only on the good sides. If you are a Leo you probably love reading how awesome you are and how superior you are to everyone else. But the reality is that we all have a dark side as well, it is 50-50 the good and the bad. For instance Aries are known for being a brave sign, but also that bravery sometimes turn into aggression. Or the Cancer who is very sympathetic and a good listener, but at the end of the day all those emotion might lead his to depression. The personality disorder is when all the good sides are prevailed by the bad sides and it is impossible to stand that person. This situation may lead to the person stop having a normal life and normal communication with other people; it can also be harmful health wise. Aries: Tend to have explosive personality. Aries are known for being the most aggressive sign that there is. Their aggression in some situations can rise to such proportions that it becomes rage, even though the situation itself does not require such outburst of rage. Taurus: Obsessive-compulsive disorder Their stubbornness is their biggest enemy. They do not like doing things in other way then theirs. This behavior may lead to Obsessive-compulsive disorder or OCD. So God forbid if something is not happening the way they planned. Gemini: Dependent Personality disorder...
