Ambu Bag (Artificial Manual Breathing Unit), is a hand-held device mostly used to create positive pressure ventilation for patients who are not breathing well, or not breathing at all. The ambu bag should be part of resuscitation kits for trained professionals not only out-of-hospital settings but also in hospitals as part of standard equipment which is found in emergency rooms. Manual resuscitators are used within the hospital usually for temporary ventilation of patients dependent on mechanical ventilators when the mechanical ventilator needs to be examined for malfunction, or when these patients are transported within the hospital. Two principal types of manual resuscitator exist, one version is self-filling with air, which can work without …show more content…
Use of the manual resuscitator force air or oxygen into the lungs in order to inflate them under pressure, thus constituting a means to manually provide positive-pressure ventilation. It is used by professional rescuers instead off mouth-to-mouth ventilation, which can be either directly or by using an adjunct such as a pocket mask.
Components
Mask
Consist of three parts.
1- Flexible mask to seal over the patients face.
2- Filter and valve to prevent the backflow of air into the bag itself.
3- Soft bag which is squeezed to expel air to the patient
The BVM (bag valve mask) consists of a flexible air chamber attached to a face mask via a shutter valve. When the face mask is applied and the bag is squeezed, the device forces air into the patient's lungs, when the bag is released, it self-inflates from its other end, drawing in either air from the surrounding environment or a low pressure oxygen from a regulated cylinder, while also allowing the patient's lungs to release air to the surrounding environment, by the one way valve.
Bag and valve
Bag and valve also can be attached to an alternate airway adjunct, instead of the mask. For example, it can be attached to an endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask
