Target Case

...in November 2006. This meeting consists of Target senior executives to consider ten capital project requests (CPR) representing nearly $300 million in Capex. Five CPRs, representing about $200 million in Capex, would require more attention from the CEC. The company’s general growth strategy consists of opening 100 new stores every year, while maintaining a positive brand image. The CEC is responsible for approval of projects within the rage of $100,000 and $50 million of Capex and tries to stay within the capital budget to meet the goal of opening 100 new stores a year and approving projects to assure a prosperous future for Target. The meeting lasts several hours and this is maybe not the best time of use for executive officers. A way to shorten the meeting could be in increasing the minimum Capex projects from $100,000 to $5 million to reduce the amount of projects in the meeting for instance. Another advantage is that the proposed projects can be discussed more in depth. In the monthly meeting, projects are presented by real estate managers along with data in the form of a dashboard that summarizes the key facts of each project which require 1-2 years of preparatory work. The real estate manager of the specific area, where the project should take place, is responsible for the proposal from inception to completion and has a strong interest and commitment to the proposal. If a project were ultimately rejected by the CEC, the real estate manager would feel strongly disappointed...

Target Case

...WRITE-UP 02 | Capital Expenditure Committee (CEC) plays a critical role in determining the projects that best fit Target’s future store growth and capital-expenditure plans. However, if the projects larger than $50 million it’s the board of directors’ responsibility to approve the project. On the one hand, the process rigorously follows Target’s strategic goal. The committee not only considers a positive NPV but also the potential of the project, the scale of the project and the effect of the project for the future. In this regard, we believe the process is considerate and well-balanced. On the other hand, when deciding to open a new store, the CEC heavily rely on P04 as a prototype, which may have missed some information with regard to location, and geographic distribution. A real-estate manager is responsible for the proposal from the beginning to the end of setting up a new store. His or her insightful knowledge and capability play an important role in choosing, reviewing and presenting the projects before getting approved or rejected by the CEC. However, real-estate managers’ emotional involvement in the proposal may make them not as objective as possible with their projects. In this regard, we would suggest Target to hire more than one real-estate manager to balance their work. Conventionally, a high, positive NPV and a high IRR are important determinants to choose a project. In terms of 5 CPRs in Target CEC situation, we believe Doug Scovanner should also consider...

Target

...Target use different hurdle rates for the store and the credit cards (9% and 4%, respectively)? What process would you use to estimate these discount rates to see if they are reasonable? Target uses different hurdle rate for the store and the credit cards because they want to make as much revenue as possible. With the low credit card rate Target is able to get a lot of people to sign up for the credit card because the interest rates are extremely low. Since Target has such a low credit card rate they raise the store interest rate to make up for the difference. I would use the IRR, NPV, or the discount payback method to estimate these rates. 2. What is Target’s capital-budgeting process? Is it consistent with the company’s business and financial objectives? The Capital Expenditure Committee (CEC) stated that the capital-budgeting process of target was to add one hundred stores a year while maintaining a positive brand image. This capital budgeting method goes hand to hand with the company’s business and financial objectives. 3. Which of the five CPRs did you accept? Which project attributes did you consider as part of your decision? I first accepted the Whalen Court CPR. I chose this CPR because this location had the highest percentage of college educated people than any other project after examining exhibit 7. Since Target wants the college educated mother with children as the ideal customer, the Whalen Court project would be good. Whalen court also is the only store around...

How can the importer hedge the foreign-exchange risk by purchasing the foreign-currency today to have it by the time the foreign-currency payment is due? Why does hedging usually take place with forward contract? Investing in foreign securities gives rise to a foreign-exchange risk because the foreign currency can depreciate or decrease in value during the time of the investment (Salvatore, 2007, p. 562). ...by 2006, Target was targeting to create a lot of outlets and they were termed as projects, each project contains a set of procedures to be followed that are then approved by the CEC (capital Expenditure committee) in order to get the store up and running. There specific consideration for the role of real-estate managers is because, those people will have the GEOGRAPHICAL IDEA about the area in which they are managing prior sending to the CEC. These Managers will be responsible if a new store proposal comes, so that they will review the GEOGRAPHY of that location and the possibilities of having a Target Outlet at that locality. CEC was started as an approval class, whose approvals are needed to get the store up and running if there is a chance for starting up a new store in any geography (Real-estate managers are responsible for this) Which of the five CPRs should Doug Scovanner accept? Be prepared to explain how each of the considerations that follow influenced your decision: Out of the 8 choices available, I would tell that Scovanner will accept NPV/IRR, Size of the project, Customer demographics, Brand‐awareness impact, Cannibalization of other stores’ sales, because, • NPV and IRR are two main things when coming to Captial Budgeting and the • size of the project, the higher the size, the maximum will be the returns and yes, it involves risk but the returns will be huge if the project is a success , • Brand-awareness impact – Because, nowadays people are driven by...

NetWitness Investigator is a software used to examine packets and list login information, transferred data, and IP addresses used, among others. For the purpose of this investigation, we are primarily concerned with the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) sessions and the file names they contained.
