Han Yu, a leading Confucian scholar and official at the Tang imperial court, approached the imperial court to construe to them his opinion on why Buddha and Buddhist beliefs are faulty. His speech/ writing was revealed to the imperial court in China around 819 C.E. Yu wants to notify the nobility that Buddhism is “barbaric” and that Buddha knows nothing of Chinese culture. He believes that Buddha himself as well as his teachings are evil and should be dismissed out of their country. Yu wants to stop the expansion of Buddhism in China by bringing attention to the nobility that Buddha’s remains should not be brought to the palace.
