The Bluest Eye was written to take place in the hometown of Tory Morrison and is told by a young girl simillar in age to Morrison in 1940 the year the novel takes place. The story has been said to be inspired by a conversation Morrison had when she was young with a little girl who longed for blue eyes and when the The Black is Beautiful movement began in the 1960’s she started writing the novel. Discrimination black people faced in that time period is something Morrsion wanted to shed light on and bring attention to.
