...Janay Booker BUAD 4020 November 2, 2013 McDonald’s and KFC Case Analysis Brief Summary In 2008 McDonald’s and KFC were the largest quick service restaurants (QSR) in the world, with 31,999 and 15,580 outlets respectively. Both chains were renowned for their broad spectrum of consumers on a global basis. McDonald’s spearheaded global expansion with its first overseas outlet in Canada in 1967 and entering Japan in 1971. McDonald’s outlets experienced tremendous success in Japan with record breaking daily sales and speed of expansion in the initial stage. KFC similarly started global expansion early with its first overseas outlet in England in 1964 and entered Japan in 1970. However KFC was not as successful as McDonald’s and did not experience profit until six years after entry. KFC opened outlets in Hong Kong in 1973 which all were closed within two years. The company would eventually gain the confidence of Hong Kong customers ten years after its entry. There was a completely different experience in China for KFC. They were recognized as the leader in foreign QSR as well as a significant player in the Chinese restaurant industry as a whole, contributing 1% in the country’s total food and beverage revenues in 2005. In 2005 KFC outlets in China recorded an average on 1.2 million in annual sales per store, compared to just 900,000 for similar stores in the US. In contrast McDonald’s presence in China was less than half of KFC’s with a significantly lower estimated profit margin...

...Position History Starbucks was started in 1971 in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Today, Starbucks operates in over 50 countries around the world, and they have more than 15,000 stores. Since 1971, Starbucks has continued to build themselves bigger and bigger, and as a result they are the largest and most well-known coffee shop in the world. Starbucks really started to take off after their current CEO, president, and Chairman Howard Schulz bought Starbucks in 1987. He was determined to make Starbucks into a “place for conversation and community”, and he strived to make Starbucks more similar to coffee shops that he visited in Italy, by making there be more of a friendly and inviting atmosphere. (Starbucks.com) Starbucks Today Starbucks, because of one of Schulz’s intiatives, has been doing better than Wall Street expected them to do, and this has mainly been because Starbucks has been cutting its costs where it can and closed 676 stores in the United States. (Steverman) In addition to closing down stores, Schulz has also been striving to get in better touch with Starbucks’s mission. Starbucks’ mission is: “to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.” (Starbucks.com) Many people felt that Starbucks had begun to lose its personal feel, so Schulz has been working to increase customer satisfaction by improving beverage taste, the speed of service provided, and the friendliness of Starbucks employees. (Steverman) While there...

...Company History: KFC Corporation is the largest fast-food chicken operator, developer, and franchiser in the world. KFC primarily sells chicken pieces, wraps, salads and sandwiches. While its primary focus is fried chicken, KFC also offers a line of roasted chicken products, side dishes and desserts. Outside North America, KFC offers beef based products such as hamburgers or kebabs, pork based products such as ribs and other regional fare. KFC, a wholly owned subsidiary of PepsiCo, Inc. until late 1997, operates over 5,000 units in the United States, approximately 60 percent of which are franchises. Internationally, KFC has more than 3,700 units, of which two-thirds are also franchised. In addition to direct franchising and wholly owned operations, the company participates in joint ventures, and continues investigating alternative venues to gain market share in the increasingly competitive fast-food market. In late 1997 the company expected to become a wholly owned subsidiary of Tricon Global Restaurants, Inc., to be formed from the spinoff of PepsiCo's restaurant holdings. New Management for Kentucky Fried Chicken In 1964 Sanders sold Kentucky Fried Chicken for $2 million and a per-year salary of $40,000 for public appearances; that salary later rose to $200,000. The offer came from an investor group headed by John Y. Brown, Jr. a 29-year-old graduate of the University of Kentucky law school, and Nashville financier John (Jack) Massey. A notable member of the investor...

...industry is very competitive because firms are always attempting to steal customers from each other. Access for distribution is crucial in the restaurant industry because if the customer can’t see you or access you easily it’s possible that they won’t go out of there way to eat there. Franchise options also make is easier to enter the market, for example Subway has built their strategic plan around franchise options. Therefore, initially the only cost to enter the market is the starting capital required to open a restaurant. (1) On the one hand, the entry barriers are low. Most fast food restaurants are small size without any advantage. There is no brand advantage for the lack of famous brand, and the capital requirement is low. The resource is more, and the existing fast food restaurant cannot form barriers for the resources. Besides, the cost is low, and the existing fast food restaurant doesn’t have rich production experience and management technology. On the other hand, the original enterprise’s counterattack is weak. For the existing fast food restaurant is lack of original information and the new entrants increase, it is unlikely to take effective responses. (2) The bargaining power of suppliers is low. The fast food suppliers are divided into two parts, one is high controllable tableware supplier and beverage supplier, the other is poor controllable raw...

...markets. Similarly, McDonald is also not an exception. As having been mentioned earlier, the new strategy that this well-known fast food corporation will choose in the upcoming period is about seeking and penetrating into Vietnamese market. This choice seems rational and appropriate to McDonald, because of its experiences in some countries with common features such as China, Thailand. However, one of the most critical issues for McDonald right now is where the company should locate their first stores in Vietnam. Obviously, for a big brand like McDonald, its target must be the developed areas in the country, where it can boost the demand of product highly and easily approach to customer’s need. Therefore, in this case, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City would be two best alternatives for McDonald. It is because of two main reasons associating with several similar characteristics of these two famous cities in Vietnam. First, both are big financial centers in Vietnam, so the living standard there is relatively high compared with that in other areas. With such high income, people also can afford for high quality products with fairly expensive price. Hence, company will have some advantages on pricing strategies. Second, fast food has been more and more popular among young people in those cities. Based on appearance of some early brands like KFC or Lotteria, McDonals can lower the cost for developing its marketing strategies and researches to build up the reputation and learn more about customer...
