...Positive Behavior Intervention & Support Systems: A Longitudinal Study of Diverse Student Populations Amanda Longhini – Halbin American College of Education Abstract Positive behavior intervention and support systems (PBISS), also referred to as Positive Behavior Support Systems (PBSS), are research and evidence-based systems implemented into various educational settings in order to increase positive behaviors among diverse groups of students within its facility. By implementing a productive responsive classroom approach, where social skills strategies are explicitly taught, modeled, and reinforced to students within the school on a frequent basis, schools experience growth in positive behaviors, reduction in negative behaviors, and an improved climate for parents, students, staff and administration. Understanding the ideology of PBISS, one should be able to analytically examine longitudinal data in order to delineate a renewed focus on behavioral goals within the structure of a school. Positive Behavior Intervention & Support Systems: A Longitudinal Study of Diverse Student Populations For many years, research had been collected to analyze the effects of implementing reward systems for positive behavior in children with emotional and behavioral disorders. With swift interventions and creative incentives, the study demonstrated that such student populations can and do experience a more effective educational experience. Because the studies focused on...

...School Bullying: A Dangerous Norm “Because he was short.” This is the response the media received when Jon Carmichael’s friends were asked why he was bullied to the point of taking his own life. In 2010, Carmichael hung himself in his family’s barn after incessant verbal and physical abuse. Besides being the target of homosexual slurs, he was thrown into trashcans on a weekly basis and held upside down over a toilet in the school’s bathroom while his head was flushed over and over. There is now a $20 million federal lawsuit against the school for negligence and rightfully so, because the most appalling part of this whole tragedy is the fact that Carmichael was only 13 years old. The lawsuit claims that several members of the school’s faculty witnessed the bullying and did not report it. It also states that an unknown staff member even filmed one incident and posted the video on YouTube (Kuo & Cooper, 2011). Unfortunately cases like this one are occurring far too frequently in our society, and the ages of these victims who commit suicide are dropping. Carmichael’s tragic ending is just one horrific example of what can happen when school officials choose to look the other way after witnessing bullying. The purpose of this proposal is to convince readers that school administrators need to actively identify and attend to the bully’s potential psychological issues, instead of focusing on the victim’s behavior. When faculty members ignore confrontations between students, they...

...examines the reported school dropout rate of students with disabilities and attempts to identify determinants and interventions that are available as well as offering potential programs and interventions in the future. As our population of children identified with disabilities grows we must anticipate their growth into adulthood and prepare them for entrance into the workforce, or prepare ourselves for the financial implications of institutionalizing and caring for this population. By examining historical statistic information along with past and current program implementation conclusions will be formulated and offered regarding what has been successful and where improvements are possible. Context of the Problem There are a multitude of issues that parents of special needs children are unaware of at the onset of diagnosis. The question of what happens to your child when you are gone is paramount in the minds of all parents. One problem is being unaware of what questions to ask. My son received his diagnosis from a psychiatrist who did not make me aware of any medical testing that should be addressed. Necessary information or guidance is not always provided by the attending physician. Educational needs are also of paramount importance, however if parents are unaware of necessary services that give their children coping skills, they will not be able to ensure services are obtained. An example is occupational therapy for sensory processing disorder that is a common occurrence in...

...of other people (Hall, 2004). Nurses are held accountable to physicians, administrators, as well as patients and their families (Hughes & Clancy, 2009). They are continually being told what to do by multiple people who all have different goals and ideas, which can be very testing at times. A sample of ten RNs was interviewed from a University Hospital Level 1 Trauma Center about work-related stressors under normal working conditions (Hall, 2004). The top stressors identified among these nurses were: systems barriers to meeting patient needs, self-expectations, shortage of nurses, and colleague’s inexperience (Hall, 2004). All ten of the nurses identified lack of equipment and supplies needed to care for their patient’s as a major stressor. Another major source of stress found was the high self-expectations the nurses had of themselves (Hall, 2004). They all admitted to being frequently critical of their inabilities to perform at a desired level. Shortage of skilled nurses was another cause of stress identified. Nurses expressed concern related to an inability to provide safe and effective patient care. RNs tend to rely on each other for support...

...Suicide Amongst Youth November 21, 2013 INTRODUCTION Barry parr, a window cleaner in a small town, was working as usual in December 2001, not expecting anything interesting to happen. Suddenly, he heard a yell from afar and saw a 14 year old girl who was preparing to hang herself from a nearby tree. He showed signs of his incipient heroism as he quickly grabbed his ladder and ran across the road to try and talk her into retreating. He tried, and that was when she got real about committing suicide. As Barry started to climb up his ladder, the girl jumped off. Luckily, Barry was close enough and strong enough and he caught her in his arms, holding her high enough to save her life. Unfortunately, however, Barry was now in an unlucky situation. Barry held on to her for an entire hour before someone passed by and called the cops. The come eventually came and helped, but not before Barry had proven to the girl, how far the world was willing to go, to save her life and keep this one lonely girl around. Suicide is a tragic and preventable mental health problem. Suicide is irrational to those who are not suicidal, but to those who are, it is the only means of escape that there is.
