...CASE STUDY: MICHEL FERNANDES AT NICHOLAS PIRAMAL 1. What is at stake for the business development function and for the company as a whole? 1) Sake for Business Development Function: Due to managerial conflicts between 3 senior managers, original plan will not be fully developed or properly implanted. As a result, integration as one will collapse if three senior managers do not communicate or work as a team. 2) Stake for a Company as a Whole: Firstly the inefficient management will increase the managerial cost which leads to revenue loss and loss of future earnings growth opportunities. The weaker financial position might further lead the company losing its competitiveness in the global market. In addition, the risk for running management inefficiently in a long term will be the collapse of the whole company. The cost here will be restructuring of the whole operations. 2. Why is conflict occurring? Even at the beginning of the acquisition, the structure of the company is already unclear and complex. Three different plants were independent companies and completely separated. Firstly, cultural conflicts between different companies and also among three management seniors have become a sever barrier for effective operations and communications for the management of the company. Grundy complained that Ananth’s Indian action-oriented operational style will not fit in with English plan/do/review style. Anath’s idea “hustle” does...

... Healing Hospital: A Daring Paradigm As nurses we are known to be hardworking, caring, compassionate and kind individuals who carry around big hearts on our sleeves. In addition, in today’s society we are also being exposed more to the spiritual aspects of each individual patient that we care for on a day to day basis. In turn, we must open up our minds and respect the patient’s spirituality, no matter what it might be, to understand that this could be their main way of coping and part of the healing process for them. We must also understand that it is “not just random, thoughtful gestures but rather a continuous chain of loving care—kindness and skill from every caregiver (including leaders) to every patient and to one another” (Ananth, 2009). Concepts of a Healing Hospital There are several concepts that must be understood as part of a Healing Hospital in which each hospital has their own mission, vision and statement. These aspects are created to let the public be aware of what they can expect from the hospital as a whole. As stated by St. Joseph’s hospital (2013), their mission is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus in the tradition of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange by continually improving the health and quality of life of people in the communities we serve. In addition to their mission statement, their components include dignity, service, excellence and justice. They go on to state that these components in relationship to spirituality are to respect...

...SPECIAL ARTICLE Challenges to Financial Inclusion in India The Case of Andhra Pradesh S Ananth, T Sabri Öncü Focusing on the institutional challenges to financial inclusion in Andhra Pradesh, this paper argues that it is the inability of formal financial institutions to meet the specific needs of the poor that has enabled informal service providers to fill the vacuum. Without a paradigm shift, especially on the part of banks, financial inclusion is bound to fall short of expectations. It proposes that the banking sector should look at efforts to expand inclusion not as a capital cost or as a charitable expense, but as a long-term investment in the future. The soundness of such an investment is borne out in the success of individual business correspondents in some districts of the state. 1 Introduction The views expressed in this paper are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect views of the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning. S Ananth and T Sabri Öncü (Sabrioncu.cafral@rbi.org.in) are with the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning, Mumbai. Economic & Political Weekly EPW inancial inclusion has become central to Indian policymaking over the past few years and various attempts have been made to expand its scope. Despite these attempts, the challenges to financial inclusion remain formidable. These attempts and challenges have to be not only examined in the context of an increasingly globalised economy, of expanding markets...

...considerable assets. Where traditional ETFs attempt to replicate the performance of a stock market index, leverage and inverse ETFs aim to achieve 2x or 3x long exposure, or -1x, -2x, or -3x short exposure. This, and the accessibility of ETFs, creates a vast number of opportunities for investors of all levels. As with all investment vehicles, however, these ETFs are coupled with a large amount of risk. The structure of these funds also creates a number of unintended consequences on the markets and often leads to questions regarding investor suitability. Since being introduced to the market in 2006, this ETF class has exploded with activity. According to “The Dynamics of Leveraged and Inverse Exchange-Traded Funds” by Minder Cheng and Ananth Madhavan, as of January 2009, 106 leveraged and inverse ETFs have been introduced in the U.S. market alone. The majority, however, of the $22 billion of assets under management , is in 2x and -2x leveraged products, with only a small percentage of the assets under management allocated to the greater leveraged and inverse ETFs. Traditional ETF vs. ETF Leverage: The difference between traditional ETFs and leveraged and inverse ETFs goes further than just their exposure to returns. The construction of these investment vehicles also is different. Regarding traditional ETFs, authorized participants such as institutional investors directly buy and sell creation large groups of tens of thousands of shares. These usually are exchanged with...

My heart is here, it’s always been. At the end of the commercial James arrives at Patterson Park in Akron, Ohio where he once played pick-up basketball. When he made his entrance, there were many members of the community present. It would combine theory and practice. To buttress our understanding of practice, we would do some case studies and also have practitioners give a Street Talk every week; some of them may discuss live projects and I may pitch in with my experience with past ones I have been directly involved in. Moreover, we would have both qualitative and quantitative discussions on most topics, the latter mainly being numerical examples (not any rocket science or high-flying calculus). Though we would talk about the global scenario, our focus, whenever possible, would be on Asia. After gaining an idea into what IB is and understanding the basics of Trading, we would study in detail the capital-raising process, mainly Underwriting and Syndication. Here, we would learn about IPO and SEO and ADR and GDR as well as about NIF and RUF. We would also get familiar with Euromarket and the innovative Euro instruments like Euronote and Euro-CP as well as Eurobond and Euroequity. This would also give an opportunity to get a glimpse into Financial Engineering in debt and equity instruments as well as about Structured...
