Euthanasia in Animal Shelters

Animal shelters were non-existent until the late 1800’s but now every year in the United States six to eight million dogs and cats enter animal shelters and three to four million of them are euthanized. Of all the animals that enter animal shelters, only 15.8 percent of dogs and two percent of cats get reunited with their owner. Unnecessary deaths of animals occur because their population is growing rapidly due to breeders and illegal puppy mills. Also, the public doesn’t understand the importance of sterilizing their pets by spaying or neutering them. Most animal shelters have become more humane about the way they euthanize the animals at their shelter, but there are still hundreds of shelters that use inhumane ways to euthanize animals such as electrocution and decompression. Buying an animal from a shelter instead of from a breeder will decrease the population of the animals, which will result in less animals getting euthanized. Some people might argue that animal shelters are a staple for our economy because they can keep the rates of animals under control. Animal shelters do house hundreds of animals at once, and only keep the ones that they think are best fit for adoption and euthanize sick and injured animals. Without animal shelters, there would be a lot of unnecessary pain and illness of animals on the street. Shelters are a place where people can bring their pet if it is ill and cannot become healthy to get euthanized for a reasonable price. Shelters are also the place where people can bring their pets that they can no longer keep in hopes that they will get a nice family to adopt them. “Shelters do place at least twenty five percent of animals that come in into new homes, and find the owners of at least fifteen percent of the animals” (Animal Humane Association). I believe with a little education to the public, animal shelters will no longer need to put down excessive amounts of animals. Even though there are numerous animal shelters in each county throughout the United States, there are still not enough of them to house all of the animals that are getting brought to them. The main reason that animal shelters are getting over populated is because the public doesn’t believe that any animals in the shelter can be a purebred or that all animals in the shelter misbehave and that’s why they are in there. People also assume that most of the animals that are in the shelter have been brought in from off the street or their owners dropped them off because of their behavior, when in reality “the main reason that animals get brought in is due to the owners moving and not being able to take their pet with them” (Petfinder). The next biggest reason for animals getting brought to a shelter is because the owner doesn’t have enough time or money to keep the pet happy and comfortable. One of the main excuses for people who don’t adopt from a shelter is that they can find a free one online or in the newspaper, when in reality it will cost more to get them sterilized and to get vaccinated that it would be to adopt one from a shelter. Most families that are considering adopting an animal want a puppy and a purebred animal, and they think it will be impossible to find one at a shelter. While it can be hard to find one on your first visit to a shelter, it is important to remember that shelters handle six to eight million animals each year. Some shelters even make it easy for people who are looking to adopt a certain breed of dog or a certain age, and they create waiting lists and they are even willing to call you when an animal comes in that matches what you want, but most people can’t be that patient and end up adopting from a breeder or from a puppy mill. It’s important to be patient when adopting a pet because being patient can reduce the number of animals getting euthanized every year. The lack of education the public has on animal shelters is frightening. Most individuals don’t understand the importance of sterilizing their pets and let their animals roam around while they are in heat and they end up getting pregnant and the puppies or kittens end up getting sold and given away to other uneducated people. If the publics education on the importance of sterilizing their pets, the number of animals will decrease tremendously. “In the 1970’s there were 62 million pets and 12 to 20 million got euthanized each year and now that the public is a little more educated there are 150 million pets and only six to eight million are getting euthanized” (Seltzer). The Humane Society of the United States is hoping that within the next couple of years or so the euthanasia rate will drop to as low was three million animals a year. That still seems like a lot, but the United States has come a long way from 12-20 million euthanasia’s a year. The ways animals are euthanized in a shelter is a highly controversial topic and has caused a ton of arguments between shelter management and animal rights advocates. Even though most of the modern shelters inject animals with sodium-pentobarbital, there are still many shelters in the United States that use electrocution, gas chambers, and decompression to kill the animals. Injection of sodium-pentobarbital is the most common way to euthanize animals because it “is painless, quick, and dignified” (PETA). The most inhumane way that shelters still use to euthanize the animals is through electrocution where they will place a metal clip on the animal’s lip and use a metal rectal electrocution probe. Although, electrocution is rarely used anymore there are reports of it being used in some states in few shelters. The next inhumane way that they can euthanize an animal is through the use of a decompression chamber that will spin the animal to the point where it will no longer be able to breath and become unconscious and eventually die. There are certain guidelines that the shelter has to follow when euthanizing animals, but that doesn’t always mean that they do. The American Veterinary Medical Association sets up these guidelines for the shelters to follow in hope that inhumane ways of euthanasia will no longer exist. Even though it is nearly impossible for the AVMA to monitor every euthanasia that happens in every shelter in the United States. It is important that the people of the United States know what is happening to their pet when they drop them off at a local animal shelter, because most “shelters give the animal only 72 hours to get adopted before they euthanize it” (AVMA). If the public can get more educated on animal sterilization, the number of animals getting euthanized will drop dramatically. If the number of animals getting euthanized drops the number of inhumane euthanasia’s will drop because the shelters will more likely be able to afford the medicine to inject in the animals and they will be able to be put down peacefully. Also if people start buying from shelters instead of from breeders and puppy mills, the number will also decrease.

Society's Choice: Adoption or Purchase

...dog or a cat, as part of the family and they often get treated like a member of the family. Unfortunately, not all pets arrive at a family’s house under the same circumstances. Many families decide that they want to purchase their pet via a breeder because they feel like they want a purebred dog, as opposed to the dogs that are sitting in shelters for months to even years at a time. Society needs to adjust, as purebred animals will still have a high chance at being bought, but shelter animals have a chance to spend a large chunk of their lives living in hopes that someone will come by and adopt them. Society has long preferred the purchasing of purebred dogs over shelter dogs and for various reasons. The first reason is the predictability of the physical traits in a purebred dog. By breeding two of the same dogs together, it uses a very similar set of genes which means that the traits that are common amongst the parents are going to be common amongst the offspring that they give birth too. A second reason is that people will buy their purebred dogs for the intent to run the dogs through dog shows. Purebred animals are the only kind of animals allowed in dog shows, so therefore by adopting a non-purebred dog; it eliminates all possibility of entering into dog shows. A third reason is that some temperamental traits are predictable in the offspring of purebred dogs. If the parents have similar temperamental behaviors (ex. biting, skittishness), there is a statistically higher outcome...

Homeless Service Dog

...considered man’s best friend, and for the veterans returning from difficult situations and have some type of physical or mental disability by having a companion by their side would have a much more positive impact on their lives. In order to start my projects I would first reach out animal shelters and rescue clinics and let them know of this program I am starting, promptly named “Heroes Companions”. Being able to reach out to shelters and have them take part in the program by allowing their sheltered dogs to train as service animals it would give not only the benefit of having a working service dog for the veterans but would be able to allow for dogs that have no home to get adopted by a caring family. The money I would be given would be used in obtaining adoption...

Why You Should Adopt a Dog

...child, and she started the love story that I have today with my canine partners. I believe this is God’s second best creation, (behind man) and at times, I feel they are His best. I adopted my first dog from the ASPCA in New York City. Micky was an abused Poodle mix, and became my first dogs as an adult. I always loved dogs, but after adopting Micky, I became an advocate for rescue, and adoption. My life was forever changed. The sad statistics show close to 2.7million cats and dogs are killed each year in our animal shelters across the US. Many people have found it necessary to surrender their pets when faced with economic stressors such as unemployment, and home foreclosures. Many apartments will not allow pets, or place restrictions on the breed, or the size of the dog. Owners are therefore forced to make a decision between their financial situation, and pet owner responsibility and commitment. Hirshey, G. (2008, May 11). Adopting a dog from a shelter can save a life. Not only can you...

Why a Dog?

...individuals who give up their pets to animal shelters, and the number of individuals who go to shelters to adopt a dog is small. Unfortunately, many animal shelters do not have enough space to house the pets comfortably and sometimes do not even have enough resources to take care of the pets. These reasons sometimes push animal shelters to tight corners and cause them to eliminate some of the pets that have not been adopted. If more people came up and adopted the dogs, fewer animals would be eliminated or tortured by those who adopt them for weird reasons. The other reason why one should adopt a dog is that when one adopts a dog from an animal shelter, he or she not only gets to save money but also gets to adopt healthy dogs. There is a common misconception that animals found in animal shelters usually have something wrong with them. The fact is there are numerous reasons that may make one give up a pet to an animal shelter. However, this is not necessarily because the animal is injured or has a certain fault. Animal rescue centers usually concentrate on bringing up animals in the healthiest way that they can to make it easy for one to adopt a dog, should one choose to take the dog home. The shelters also regularly examine the pets and vaccinate them accordingly and regularly, and they pay close attention to the pets to ensure they are in their best health. In relation to cost, it is usually much cheaper to purchase a pet from an animal rescue center than it is to purchase a...

Pet Adoption

...There cases where people prefer to adopt other pets, and never opt to go a pet-dog. Many have associated their preference to the easiness in training the pet as well as the difficulties experienced when outsourcing for the same. Personally I feel that a dog would make an excellent pet on my side. In fact, dogs are indeed the best pets one would wish to have as they provide the desired companionship and support to the owner. Adopting a dog is in itself fulfilling since I will deliberately take care of the pet while providing the necessary care and amenities. Majority of dogs up for adoption are pure breeds, thus possess excellent agility and obedience levels (Banks, 2006). Dogs are beneficial pets especially because of the endless options which a dog can undertake. There are competitions available for the pet dogs for instance they can be useful for therapy purposes or even security services. Such competition avenues are not available to other pets like cats and lizards. As long as the dogs are spayed and neutered on regular basis, most illnesses which affect them will be put at-bay. Thus expensive medications due to illnesses like hip dysplasia, cancer or chronic seizures will not be undertaken translating to a lot of savings. Other dogs are already trained on commands and obedience thus bonding becomes easy. This is not the case with other pets like bird or even lizard where the adopter has to engage in serious training prior to familiarizing with the pets behavior. More often...

It is adding a new being into your life and can lead to one of the most exciting days of your life. Choosing a good pet these days is pretty easy however adopting the right pet can be a challenge. To choose a pet, you need to examine your lifestyle, estimate the costs and determine what type of dog. *Examine your current lifestyle and consider what adjustments you are willing to own for a dog. * *Think of what type of animal you want. Consider on the ideal size & breed, activity level and physical maintenance. Conclusion- Once you have made your selection, why not spend some time alone with the dog, at least 10 to 15 minutes, to see if the dog can relax with you. If the dog’s behavior makes you comfortable, you like the dog, and both of you had some connection, and then why not adopt him/her. Deciding to become a dog owner is a huge commitment, but not like signing for a contract for a house. So be ready for this new adventure, because if anything happens you need to considered always the dog. Size Just like big dogs have their disadvantages by their size, puppies have them to. Small dogs tend to be delicate and vulnerable. They need more attention because a mishandled can cause serious injury and in colder temperatures they are really sensitive so be ready to warm him/her.
