While studying architecture in Frankfurt, at the age of 23, Friedrich instead chose to begin his career in education. While teaching at Anton Gruener’s school, he visited Pestalozzi’s Institute at Yverdon where he would eventually take some students to teach. During this time, Friedrich found a deep esteem for the way the children played and the nature walks that Pestalozzi guided. Eventually, he came to believe that Pestalozzi’s way of educating children was lacking. For this reason, he set out to develop a complete system (Palmer, 2001).
