Football is now a multi-billion pound business it generates serious debate when it comes to money and most often when it comes to player’s pay. In this essay I will give views of both sides of the said argument above and will show just why people feel so strongly about how much money footballers earn. I will also give a conclusion on my personal beliefs of this.
Many people around the world have a vast belief that footballers are paid far too much amounts of money, with players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Yaya Touré and Lionel Messi earning up to £300,000 a week for kicking a ball around a pitch. Whilst it would take around two or three years or even more than that for a teacher, policeman, fireman or doctor to earn this amount. The belief is that every premiership player in big leagues such as the English, Spanish, German and Italian leagues are the ones who earn too much, whereas players in lower leagues such as lower Scottish divisions or even lower English ones earn minuscule amounts. The majority of footballers in the world are on low wages and a large sum of these people are only playing part time but that doesn’t take away the fact that thousands and thousands of players are on big money a week when this money could be used to create more jobs for unemployed and homeless people and to give money to people who actually do the world a service. Such as surgeons or policemen who are trying to do good for the cities and countries in which they live.
But just how much are we as fans/supporters contributing to this? We don’t seem to realise just how much we do towards these huge wages. Half time food prices are soaring incredibly high yet we still buy the refreshments even though prices are almost three times as much as the usual price. Even by purchasing season tickets which in some places cost a lot more than they should. English conference side Bristol Rovers are charging the same price as Barcelona one of the greatest teams in footballing history for a ticket. £18.
However despite all of this there are still many around the world who feel it is necessary for these men to be paid the huge amounts of money as they are entertainers. Entertainers who are risking their own health to play the game that they and we the fans love. But is the money linked to success? The answer is yes, teams such as Chelsea and Manchester United or Real Madrid who have spent billions of pounds are the teams who have gained the greater rewards than smaller clubs like Real Betis, Shrewsbury or Atalanta. Britain is a footballing nation and arguably the one thing that brings us together, which is why so many people see it necessary for the players to be paid hundreds of thousands of pounds, But should the plaers wages be capped? That’s a different question.
In conclusion although there are good points for both sides of the argument I have decided I believe players are paid too much simply because of the point made which stated how these men are paid millions of pounds every month for kicking a ball around a field of grass whilst people who risk their lives for the safety of others or who every day ae trying to do good for the world with not much reward are paid large amounts less. Also the fact that with all the excess of unneeded money by footballers and even football clubs which could be used to create more jobs for the unemployed and to help get people off the streets and to make the world a better place is wasted. By spending say £82,000,000 on a single football player, Yes these players are talented but in my opinion are not worth the billions of pounds that today makes football what it is.
