...Zoos are Inhumane Camps for Animals Wild animals are just that; wild. For centuries humans have taken wild animals out of their habitats and put them in captivity. There are many reasons behind this act, some being protection from predators, disease, and possible extinction. Individuals maintain that zoos are a way for youngsters and adults to attain education about animals. The animals are well cared for, maintained, and fed regularly. People are the biggest danger towards animals that live in the wild. Certain species such as African Elephants are hunted for their tusks, minks for their fur, bears for their pelts, and Mediterranean monk seals merely because they eat all the fish. There are several other animals and mammals that are either severely endangered or extinct. With that, zoologists and others seem to think it is better to have species such as these kept captive in a zoo. Zoos are a means of entertainment in addition to a safe haven for animals that are in danger. “Both the Baltimore Zoo and the Detroit Zoo have taken in polar bears rescued from a traveling circus, and the Bronx Zoo took in an orphaned snow leopard from Pakistan in 2007. The cub, Leo, now spends his time frolicking and chasing small animals that wander into his enclosure” (Nancie Majkowski, ver. 2). On the rebuttal side, zoos are believed to be inhumane camps merely for the enjoyment of spectators and for cities to make a buck. There are several organizations that demand the release...

...It is inhumane to throw an animal into a zoo, aquarium, or circus where it could possibly live the rest of its life. However, even if the animal is compensated its freedom after putting on a show, there is still a standing issue too. An article from Progressive Animal Welfare Society or PAWS defines habituation as, “a process by which animals gradually get used to situations they would normally avoid.” But because they are so adapted to being around humans and in a confined space with little or no contact with any other mammals, they can be in great danger even after being released. Since they were snatched from their natural habitats, the ‘environments’ the inhumane institutions have can never be up to par with an icy glacier from the north pole or a humid steamy forest from South America. Adam Roberts, an animal rights activist, say that in their confinements there is barely any social, mental, or physical stimulations. A gruesome lion or killer whale instincts tell them to hunt for their food. But after being enslaved they are fed from an...

...rehabilitation should be minimal and that is where the flaw is found with zoos and SeaWorld’s across the country. Marine and land mammals at both facilities are stripped of their wild instincts, and their natural progression is stunted because of government and business execs setting the standards as to when the creature is to receive health treatment, cognitive care, or even primitive dietary requirements. Any living being, especially marine and land mammals shouldn’t be considered a financial burden when it comes to their well-being. Facilities such as zoos and SeaWorld are accountable for holding many animals and marine mammals with the so-called “intentions” of strengthening, learning, and teaching about the species they hold and, in some cases, even advertise their plans of rehabilitating those creatures that may be facing a permanent disappearance. Sadly, in actuality they are creating mental breakdowns and depression among animals and unfortunately responsible for animals slow physical decay within their own enclosures. What needs to be realized is that animals and marine mammals are adept of experiencing the same emotions if not more then humans. They are highly intelligent beings that are unable to speak up for their well-being. As human beings it should be our duty to protect and help these creatures flourish. In recent years, research has proven that the captivity of all wild animals is inhumane and extremely harmful...

...Throughout the world, Zoos and Aquariums are a very popular attraction for people of all ages. Every year thousands of people wait in ongoing lines to visit their favorite animal they only get to see on television. Little do they know, they are feeding into another reality. It is a reality of unfairness, cruelty, and depression. The animals in captivity get no chance to live the way they were born to live. They are held in tiny, small spaces only for the luxury of humans, with no regards to the animals’ natural wants. Zoos and Aquariums are inhumane and have nothing but negative effects on the animals being held. Animals that are held in Zoos and Aquariums do not get fair treatment nor freedom. The author of “Death and Dying At The Zoo,” Mary P. Benbow, uses a very powerful quote in her article to explain this. “Once an animal enters a zoo, it is essentially dead. Stripped of its behavior, social context and ecological milieu, a lion is no longer a lion, but a bag of DNA waiting for its next meal, a chance to copy its DNA or death,” (381). Visitors of the Zoos and Aquariums are beginning to become aware of this struggle. Barbra Woods, and author of the article called “Good Zoo/Bad Zoo: Visitor Experiences in Captive Settings” explains how people felt when they went to...

...animals; being in a zoo enclosure can cause a range of both emotional and physical illnesses, despite the fact that zoos can help save some of the endangered animals. Although zoos may be fun for people, the animals can be mentally and physically impaired for the rest of their lives. First and foremost, dolphins and whales specifically are plucked out of the water from their family. For those who didn’t know, whales and dolphins have a family bond almost like humans, they stick together for many years if not for life and always travel together. “The very nature of these animals makes them uniquely unsuited to confinement….Family bonds often last for many years, in some species, they last for a lifetime.” Because of the social nature of many animals, marine animals...

...not be practiced in group homes/ juvenile detention facilities. With that being said, some people may argue that certain delinquents deserve isolation and confinement. Some people strongly believe that this isolation can be used as a "reflection time" on wrongful actions/ behavior that certain delinquents have shown. Others simply believe that some hard core juveniles just deserve to spend time in solitary confinement as a brutal punishment and "wake up call". I can agree that certain delinquents need a wake- up call, however solitary confinement is definitely not the answer because it is inhumane. Solitary confinement is literally locking up an individual in a cage, which is wrong enough when done to animals in a zoo, let alone human beings. It is physically inhumane and not a stable living condition for anyone to be in, no matter the age or health of a person. Not only is it physically inhumane, but solitary confinement is also mentally...

...The Use of Animals for Human Entertainment Adults take children to the circus, zoo, rodeos, movies, and marine parks to see different kinds of animals quite frequently. When people are young, they grow accustomed to seeing animals in these different environments and do not think of the harm it is potentially causing the animals. People do not typically know the habitats and conditions in which the animals live; they just see charming animals. Animals are being removed from their natural habitats to be placed into captivity for human enjoyment. Numerous animals in entertainment are being treated in barbaric and harsh ways. The use of animals for human amusement certainly involves removing animals from their habitats and putting them into inhumane conditions. Numerous laws prohibit the use of animals in entertainment. Since animals are abused and exported for a few moments of human entertainment, laws must be implemented to protect animals from abuse and exportation for the selfish entertainment of people. The owners of animals in entertainment are often not willing to pay for the costs of large cages or are unable to have large cages for the animals. When these animals are enclosed in small and overcrowded spaces, it often leads to filthy living conditions and animals’ fighting for their territory. Fighting can cause physical injury and weakness to the animals. “A negative side-effect associated with the physical environment provided to dolphins in captivity has been...

...Animals for Rent In our society today, with all our advancements and breakthroughs, life in the 21st century is noticeably better than before. However, some problems will never go away, like war and death. Aside from that, a problem which has recently plagued our society is the practice of animals-for-rent. Animals, like humans, have their own habitats, and they live in what we collectively call the wild. Some humans have decided to pull these animals out of their homes and rent them for profit through the inhumane practice of animals-for-rent. These ignorant people are very cruel; they treat the animals as objects that only serve as entertainment to the public in the form of rental books or DVDs (Animal Aid, 2007). This unsafe and exploitative practice has gradually weakened animal rights and rips deeply into human morality and conscience. It is often the case that the people involve in this practice, this so-called exotic pet markets, give no regards to the survival of these animals, which are often on the endangered list. According to Richard Farinato (in The Humane Society of the United States, www.hsus.org), wild and exotic animals are favorable vectors for diseases and parasites, often the outbreak of diseases cause the death of a mass of animals. If this situation is continue without any resolution, these animals might become extinct. Because there are no concerns to the needs of the animals, the livelihood will decrease rapidly, and eventually they might not be...

...Opposition: a group of people who strongly oppose what is currently happening. During the Nazi reign, many people in Denmark, France and Poland, strongly resisted Hitler and his beliefs, and would do anything to stop him and his genocide. Denmark didn’t like any of Hitler's beliefs and they thought they were cruel and inhumane. Next, France resisted the Nazis heavily. Also, Poland did not like Hitler and also opposed him. Indeed, Denmark, France, and Poland opposed the Nazis and they did all that they could to resist them or stop them. During World War II in Denmark, the Danish decided to take a stand against Nazi, Germany. The Danish were informed about the Nazi raid and took action to make sure that little ,or no Jews were taken. The Danish moved all of their Jews into the safety of Sweden by fishing boats, Only 600 Jews of the 8000 population was discovered and deported to the Concentration Camps . Georg Duckwitz, informed the Danish about a second raid. The Jewish quickly hid in nearby homes or in churches. Only 284 of the 8000 Jews were found. Seeing these animals trapped and put on display for a profit ruins the fun and raises question as to who is responsible for thinking that animal cruelty for profit was a good idea. Gabriela Cowperthwaite exposes the corporate company of SeaWorld in her documentary Blackfish for their negligence to animal captivity and allowing the attacks of innocent people to continue to happen. Along with the theme of animal cruelty, Jurassic World also portrays the company as reckless in pursuit of money and greed. Both...

...experiments. When Joseph Resnick was fighting for this law to be established, he stated, “We are interested in curbing petnapping, catnapping, dognapping, and protecting animals destined for research laboratories, while they are in commerce.” Originally, the Animal Welfare Act sought to address the growing concern for cats and dogs used in research. Today, AWA has broadened its protections to certain warm-blooded animals used for laboratory research as well as animals who are owned by exhibitors, suppliers, and transporters. In other words, this law applies to facilities that breed animals for commercial use, facilities that use animals for research, organizations that transport animals commercially, and facilities that publicly exhibit animals (zoos, aquariums, circuses,...

...Some people also believe that that abusing animals is a sign of strength and toughness . There is also a group of people who feel pleasure in abusing animals and they enjoy seeing animals in pain and thus derive satisfaction in torturing them . Another reason would be that the abuser do not realize the consequence of his action such as young and naïve children . Many people also gain profit in abusing them which lead to further abuse as they don’t see the outcome of their wrongdoings . 3 Types and Cases of Animal Abuse Torturing of pets , killing animals in an inhumane manner and failing to provide appropriate food and shelter to pets constitute Animal Abuse (What is Animal Cruelty ?, 2014). 3.1 In the World 3.1.1 Animal Farming Animals are kept in inhumane manner for their valuable parts or even forced to breed for selling purposes ( Puppy Mill ) . ...cripples them for life, and the cats are in constant pain. Dr. Conrad states on her documentary that declawed cats basically “sit back on the wrists, avoiding pressure on the toes and this causes arthritis in the wrists, the elbows, and the shoulders” (Conrad). This is the fate that most exotic cats face when they are raise in captivity as pets or as movie stars, because by declawing them they are safer to be around with. Raising an exotic animal in captivity aside from being cruel is also dangerous. Exotic animals are wild by nature, and they cannot be tamed. They are a clicking time bomb that will go off sooner or later. There are an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 tigers in the United States, but fewer than 400 of them are in zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (“Dangerous Exotic Pets: Big Cats”). This is a big number of big cats that are potential dangers to communities. Many accidents have occurred where people lose an arm or leg, and in worst cases their life: Since 1990, more than 300 dangerous incidents involving big cats have occurred in 44 states. Four children lost their lives and at least 66 others lost limbs, suffered paralysis, were left permanently blind, or suffered other injuries (“Dangerous Exotic Pets: Big Cats”). Big cats are not the only problem. Primates, and reptiles are among the most popular exotic pets’ people own. Primates are highly intelligent, and they become territorial as they grow. They can cause serious injury when they bite, and...

...Despite animals, not deserving abuse, there are still evil people out there who create and participate in horrible festivals such as Yulin. The Yulin Festival where dogs are skinned alive and beaten to death so the Chinese community can consume meat. In addition, parks and zoos such as Sea World perpetuate animal abuse by locking and not properly taking care of animals. Humans are inconsiderate and inhumane as they treat animals with zero respect and in effect, animals such as the Atlas bear, Bali Tiger, Saber-toothed cat, and Yangtze River Dolphin “have been wiped off the face of the earth” (“Animals Near Extinction, Abused and Neglected—Let’s Be Their Voice!”). So many people are uninformed in the world who do not realize the horrible effects of animal abuse that is occurring around them every day, thus animals are ending up in shelters, being euthanized, and dying. If more people were properly educated about what animal abuse is, where it is occurring, and the effects it partakes, the quantity of abused and neglected animals could drastically be...

...“What is the first thing that comes to mind when the phrase ‘World War II’ is mentioned?” The typical response to this question will almost always be “Hitler and his cruelty toward Jews.” What is strange about this answer, is the fact that the majority of people do not realize what actually occurred in Europe during this time. To most people, the Holocaust was an “event” where many Jews were killed by Nazis. In fact, the Holocaust was a tragic point in history which many believe never occurred, or do not realize the suffering behind the widespread destruction. The pain and conditions exper- ienced by the victims is unimaginable by any standards. In the early 1930’s, the United States was reveling in turmoil. Eastern Europe was on the verge of power, and in a small western European country called Germany, trouble was brewing. In 1933, Europeans had no worries beyond their daily struggle to earn money, put food on their family's table, and clothes on their children's backs. This would all change in a matter of months. Whatever type of life a person had built or molded for themselves, it was all to come to a crashing halt if they did not conform to Hitler’s specifications. On January 30, 1933 Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany. In March 1933, with the building of the Dachau concentration camp, “Adolf Hitler's rising became one of the swiftest, most destructive leaderships in recorded human existence” (Bauer 12). After his inception as ruler of Germany, Adolf Hitler...
