Talia is one of many daugthers in the village Sensholding. Her family is a part of the Holderkin. Holderkin is a puritanical group in which the men are the heads of the family, and where the men hold absolute authority. The women are expected to be submissive in all aspects of life, not even being allowed to learn how to read. Naturally, this applies to Talia too. She was born on Midsummer Day, and was her mother’s last child. Her mother died while giving birth to her, and this was something that her father would not let her forget.
