Reflection 5: Sculpture or Crafts

The Bernini’s Ecstasy of Saint Theresa is an impressive sculpture that I came across and as I ponder about it has an absolute important meaning, but at the same time it’s strange. I found a description of how Bernini describes this sculpture:” Beside me, on the left, appeared an angel in bodily form.... He was not tall but short, and very beautiful; and his face was so aflame that he appeared to be one of the highest rank of angels, who seem to be all on fire.... In his hands I saw a great golden spear, and at the iron tip there appeared to be a point of fire. This he plunged into my heart several times so that it penetrated to my entrails. When he pulled it out I felt that he took them with it, and left me utterly consumed by the great love of God. The pain was so severe that it made me utter several moans. The sweetness caused by this intense pain is so extreme that one cannot possibly wish it to cease, nor is one's soul content with anything but God. This is not a physical but a spiritual pain, though the body has some share in it—even a considerable share.” I feel like this certain description he is talking about the devil because he was an angel, fallen angel and he describes fire and we all know the devil is associated with fire .He says Mother Theresa said she got a spiritual pain from it so intense even uttered moans. So it also sounds like its sexual related and ecstasy is a drug so its possible this has to do with the devil. “Saint Teresa describes her intensely spiritual experience in very physical, even sexual terms. Why? We know that an important goal of Baroque art is to involve the viewer. Teresa is describing this in physical terms so that we can understand. After all, being visited by an angel and filled with the love of God is no small experience. How can we, with our ordinary experiences, hope to understand the intensity and passion of her experience except on our own terms?”(According to Bermini).

When we look at the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Bernini we have to consider the entire space of the chapel. The chapel is called the Cornaro Chapel, after the Cornaro family who controlled it and commissioned Bernini to sculpt Saint Teresa. (According to Bernini) As you look at this we will have to go up to the boxes and see that it’s a conversion or praying between the guys in the box. This sculpture s legendary and very famous and means a lot to the catholic church.

Art of Love

...The Art of Love, written by Ovid, was a set of three books, the first being a guide or rule book on how to “pick-up” women and the second book a rule book on how to keep the woman you have or “caught” satisfied and interested in you. The third and final book that he wrote was written for women on what to do to catch and keep a man, since he felt it was only fair for women to also be “armed” when it comes to picking- up men. The rules that Ovid describes in The Art of Love are similar to the rules that most people follow in the “cruising and catching” game because they are effective and produce results, although not all the rules described in Ovid’s book are still used, a great majority of them are and have not changed after so many years. My overall perception for Ovid’s poem would be that of surprise. I would describe it as surprising because the “moves” that were implemented thousands of years ago are still very accurate and being used today. What Ovid’s poem tells me is that the “game” between men and women has not changed even though men and women have. Although most of the rules that Ovid writes about are now common sense in the dating world, such as choosing the best place to meet women just as fishermen know the best places to cast their nets to catch fish, and are followed by everyone. Ovid’s poem must have been written by experiences that he had and by the experiences that yielded the best results. In order for him to write a poem that describes what goes on today...

Ovid Art of Love

...Ovid's "Art of Love" Rings True in the Twentieth Century It is a physical truth that the male and female sexes were made to fit together as counterparts. Animal corresponding parts come together to perform intercourse in order to regenerate a species. In nature there are hundreds of mating rituals and courting practices used when a male or female seeks a mate. Each pursuer looks for certain aspects of a potential mate. People analyze personal traits when looking for a mate, but the mating ritual is no longer simply based on instinct. Society's materialism and commercialism have complicated the search for love and companionship, which are spurred by a social need for love and marriage. Ovid's didactic work on "The Art of Love" is a comical and universal instruction guide on how to attract the opposite sex. In his instruction he stereotypes men and women in opposite ways and he makes generalizations that show how men and women are counterparts to each other. Ovid uses stereotypes to further the mocking tone of his criticism of the society that Augustus banished him from. The stereotypes seem to be ridiculous, but Ovid uses them because they are in actuality true. Ovid's advice to men and women is essentially to be manipulative and to please the other with lies and false intentions. He mocks the society that he lives in, and he even mocks some potential readers of his book. The people who he mocks most often are women as a sex. The entire point of The Art of Love is to instruct...

Analysis Of Video Games Were Not Art By Roger Ebert

...Ever since film critic Roger Ebert stated that video games were not art, there has been much debate regarding the issue. According to Ebert, art provides instruction about “life, love, disease and death, principles and morality, humor and tragedy” (Reese). Therefore, I believe that games can be art because they can apply to someone personally and emotionally. For example, a very simple game called Passage could make people cry. It uses the freedom of choice and the interpretation of life to make the game very personal. Because it illustrates aspects of life such as “emotional devastation” (Reese), life, love, etc., it fits Ebert’s definition of art. Not all games are art, but those that incorporate the processes of life are art. Another reason...

Mucha

...Introduction This week’s discussion forum topic is to identify a favorite work of art. While I’m not sure I have one absolute favorite, I can easily identify one of my favorites and will be happy to introduce you to this piece. Of course, if you are already familiar with the artist then I hope you enjoy refreshing your memory. Discussion Several years ago, at an estate sale in a neighboring town, I found a large wooden art piece that had always been one of my favorites. While it isn’t an original by any stretch of the imagination, it is something that brings me joy. After happily exchanging some cash for it, I rushed home and hung it prominently over our piano. The artist is Alphonse Mucha and he lived 1860–1939. He became very well known...

Aaliyah's Age Aint Nothin But A Number

...Music is Beautiful Art Art can be categorized as many different things, whether that’s movie productions, paintings/drawings, music productions, theatre performances, etc. “Tolstoy does not define art in terms of its ability to express form and beauty, but instead defines art in terms of its ability to communicate concepts of morality. For Tolstoy, aesthetic values are defined by moral values” (Tolstoy, Para. 1). Popular things that are considered to be art are usually paintings, moldings, etc., but there are plenty of other categories that is art. Art must have five attributes that all go hand in hand. Art must be beautiful, meaningful, flow, easily accessible, and requires talent. The R&B Soul Music category may not seem as art to some; but it in fact is art. Black Art

... Art is very unique in every aspect of its presentation. In my case, I chose to work on a black box with some items whose color relates to that of the box too. When I looked at this box, I came up with many questions like to who does this box belong to and why is it black. I had a deep feeling that the owner of this box was a simple man who was neatly organized as per his items inside the box. The color black on most of his items also made me feel that this person was not the kind of a person to mess with. Since as per my perception black things are usually owned by tough people such as a hit man and tough government agent such as the CIA. This led me to illustrate on each item and what it represents alone based on what I felt and as per art. Art tell a story of something or a person and below is the story of the person who owns this as per my perception. Items The cigarettes and coin The cigarettes reveals to us that the owner of the box loves to smoke. And when I saw them I had a feeling that the owner was a regular smoker. That is why there is a cigarette on top of that box so as to remind him that he must smoke. Another reason for having the cigarette can reveal that this person is a cool guy who loves to party. As for the coins, I felt that they might reveal a different story which either the person is organized since we can see how neatly they are arranged or he loves money but he doesn’t earn much. The sunglasses,...

Asian Art

...1922, Siqueiros returned to Mexico City to work as a muralist for Álvaro Obregón’s revolutionary government. Then Secretary of Public Education José Vasconcelos made a mission of educating the masses through public art and hired scores of artists and writers to build a modern Mexican culture. Siqueiros, Rivera and José Orozco worked together under Vasconcelos, who supported the muralist movement by commissioning murals for prominent buildings in Mexico City. Still, the artists working at the Preparatoria realized that many of their early works lacked the "public" nature envisioned in their ideology. In 1923 Siqueiros helped found the Syndicate of Revolutionary Mexican Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, which addressed the problem of widespread public access through its union paper, El Machete. That year the paper published – "for the proletariat of the world" – a manifesto, which Siqueiros helped author, on the necessity of a "collective" art, which would serve as "ideological propaganda" to educate the masses and overcome bourgeois, individualist art. Siqueiros hoped to create a style that would bridge national and universal art. In his work as well as his writing, Siqueiros sought a social realism that at once hailed the proletariat peoples of Mexico and the world while avoiding the clichés of trendy "Primitivism" and "Indianism"  1932 at the Italian Hall at Olvera Street in Los Angeles.[11] Painting fresco on an outside wall – visible to passersby as well as intentional viewers...
