The article I chose was “A Family of a Different Feather.” In this article the author talks about how she doesn’t understand how a children’s book is on the most-challenged books list. She goes on to say how her daughter is an avid reader and the book would have really helped her. The book speaks of a penguin who had two dads. The author’s daughter had a classmate who had two moms instead of the traditional mother and father. Curious, the daughter asked her mom why the classmate had two moms. The mother thought for a moment and explained to her that there were different types of families. The daughter accepted this answer and no more questions were asked. While this question was answered simply the author wished she had the book “And Tango Makes Three,” a book that has been put on the most-challenged list, so she could let her daughter read it and perhaps understand the situation better. It is sad this book has been banned in so many classrooms, since there are so many children out there in these situations. Perhaps one day, acceptance will be a nationwide thing, and people won’t be so offended by books that are just trying to help people understand different situations.

Children should have something that can help teach them acceptance. This book helps children understand that, while some families may be different and have a different way of doing things, they are all equal and should not be looked down on for their decisions. 2. Warrant. The warrants made in this article are that if the book was not banned then it would be easier for both parents and children to understand how to explain children with same-sex parents. The support for this warrant is the author having to explain to her daughter why her classmate has two moms. She says that if her daughter could have read this book she feels she would understand the situation better. The warrant establishes the background knowledge for the topic necessary for the reader to understand the article. She explains not only why she feels that students should have access to the book but also personal experience leading to this conclusion. 3. Support The grounds for this article are to inform its readers that each family is built differently. Even though some families may have two dads, two moms, or even just be single parent households, every family is special in its own way. Using her own personal experiences with her daughter she explains her way of explaining how all families are different. Her personal experiences with this have made her article, and argument, that much stronger. 4. Qualifiers I didn’t find any words that would be considered qualifiers within this article. 5. Rebuttals This article didn’t have any rebuttals added to it. Despite the lack of rebuttals and qualifiers in this article, I found it quite persuasive. Her usage of real life situations and explanation of school boundaries brings out why the book doesn’t need to be on the most-challenged books list. She writes very passionately and convincingly. I believe that she’s convincing and can convince others to believe so as well.
