...An article review of Harvey, Bosco and Emanuele, 2010, ‘The Impact of “Green Collar Worker” on Organizations, Management Research Review, vol.33, no. 5, pp 499-511. One of key factors to ensure organizational effectiveness is the people who run it. Therefore, acquiring and employing the workforce has to be planned and managed well since the business environment is facing rapid changes mainly in terms of generation employed, technology and society needs. This article concentrates on how “green collar workers” affect an organization. The authors’ main idea is that practice of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme with regard to environmental activities has an effect on organization image which may lead to better selection in recruitment. Based on previous research, Harvey, Bosco and Emanuele (2010) conducted a study on the importance of CSR/organization’s environmental activities and its relationship with employee willingness to recommend employer to others. This research aimed to provide further understanding on the influence of “green collar worker” on organization particularly on employee behaviour since previous research have been unclear. The study reveals that Veterans and Boomers are more interested in environmental conservation compared to other generation which is against most findings in research pertaining attitudes toward environmental issues where most of them found that younger people are more into it. ...of career development paths for employees. The focus of employee development has creates a sense of community and loyalty between employee and employer. Relationship building within an organization is a top priority for business success. Generationally changes in the workforce have created multiple variations of employees in today's workforce. The largest generation of employees is the baby boomers. This generation has traditionally been very committed to companies and have high trust and loyalty. Generation millennials have a much different outlook at employment than baby boomers. These two are just a couple examples of generational employees that companies must adapt to retain. Mentoring has been around for quite some time but traditionally was reserved for upper management. Companies realized the benefits of mentoring could be transferred to all employees as a part of development and growth plans. We will look at mentoring to compare the idea that mentoring is an effective and low cost way to develop employees and build that trust and loyalty needed for employees and organizations. We will look at two different articles from authors who have conducted research on the positive effects of employee development through mentoring relationships of the employee/employer. Defining mentoring is a critical step in the process of implementing and continuing a vital program. Greenhaus defines mentoring as a relationship between junior and senior colleagues. Agree or disagree with this statement and provide reasons for your response. “If you have regular conversations with people, and they know where they stand, then the performance evaluation is maybe unnecessary.” The performance evaluation is never unnecessary regardless of the regularity of meetings with their employees. Employees prefer to know where they stand. They dislike surprises but they do desire clearly defined goals and objectives in order to performance successfully. In 2011, Noe Hollenbeck, Gerhart & Wright reported that, “Most Employees are motivated by direct and regularly scheduled feedback: they want to know that they are on the right track” (p. 245). However, it is important to consider the generation preferences within the group. Millennial employees have grown up in an era with continual guidance from parents; therefore, they prefer frequent and candid performance feedback. Baby boomers on the other hand, were raised more independent and earned their statuses, which results in their preference for less interactive feedback. Generation X leans more toward the Millennial preferences regarding evaluation feedback. They too want constant feedback but it must be” accurate, specific and timely” (Tulgan 1996, para 4). They want each feedback encounter to provide learning and career growth opportunities...

When one thinks of innovation, it is a term used to described new ideas and new beginnings. One who introduced this concept to a failing organization, was an innovative leader named Vineet Nayar. In 2007, Nayar was named CEO of IT Services and Outsourcing Firm HLC Technologies. With his strategic vision and global outlook, he catapulted the then dismal firm into the leader of the organizational pack in a short amount of time. First, this analysis will take a deep look into the strategic vision and global outlook that Nayar used to catapult HLC Technologies. Also, the analysis will introduce the five discovery skills and how Nayar used these skills to create this organization and what steps he needs to take to continue shaping HLC into a more innovative company. In the beginning of Nayar's 2010 article "A Maverick CEO Explains How He Persuaded His Team to Leap into the Future”, he describes his appointment as President of HLC technologies as a “leap to safety.” (Nayar, 2010) It became apparent that there was something he needed to do take change the interface of this company. ...| | |Assignment 1: Exploration of a Journal Article in Sociology | |RACIAL/ETHNIC DIFFERENCES in EXTENDED FAMILIES | “Racial/Ethnic Differences in Extended Families” is an article review of existing interpretive sociology research. Interpretive Sociology research using existing sources is the type of research involved in this article. A symbolic-interaction approach was given and qualitative data was used in discovering the subjective sense people make of this/their world. The article proves that culture sticks with a person and/or group for a lifetime and through generations. It directly relates to the non-materialistic part of culture and the beliefs and values of each group. The main concept of the article is to show that different racial/ethnic groups have different types of extended families. The Asian-Americans show that their culture values responsibility. This also shows that families remain one of the most important aspects in their society; to them being a family member is usually what they identify with as the master status. Taking the elderly into their homes and watching over and taking care of them can be classified as one of their...

...debate surrounding the topic of how social media and smartphone usage may be affecting teens and adults alike. Several articles have been released regarding the issue, most notably ‘Are Smartphones Destroying a Generation?’ by Jean Twenge, which is controversial to some. Many people accept the correlation between rising depression rates and smartphone use among teens, but there are many flaws in the data used the support the claim. So, the question i’d like to answer in my research is; Are smartphones and other devices helping my generation succeed in a constantly evolving technological world, or are they hindering their social and mental growth? Authors like Twenge that support the idea that smartphones and social media are directly linked to teen depression ‘cherry-pick’ the studies that support the claim, but ignore studies that suggest screen use isn't linked to outcomes like depression and loneliness among teens, and especially disregards research that suggests that it is actually associated with positive outcomes; like better multi tasking, fast thinking, problem solving and information gathering ability (Moorhead, Joanna). This selective mindset in gathering information is best explained in a psychologytoday...

...immigrant in the United States to achieve the American Dream, the concept of racism and the idea of hyper masculinity pushed upon a young boy growing up. Moreno, Marisel. Debunking Myths, Destabilizing Identities: A Reading of Junot Diaz’s "How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie." Fall2007, Vol. 26 Issue 2. This article is presented with an essay which analyzes the short story "How to Date a Brown girl, Black girl, White girl, or Halfie," by Junot Diaz. It reflects on racial ethics and how one generation can affect another by embedding in our psyche that racism is the fault of our ancestors; as it is something that has been handed down from generation to generation. I chose this article because the racism that the characters faced within Drown is quite similar to the ones faced by immigrants in the United States. There is a racial and ethnic tension among blacks and Hispanics which in some cases turns violent. Examples of this can be found in the short story that gives the name to the novel: Yunior´s mother relates to him of the attacks of African Americans on Hispanics in their neighborhood. Oulahan, Cain W. “The American dream deferred: family separation and immigrant visa adjudications at U.S. consulates abroad”. Marquette Law Review.
