Subject Matter * produced realistic variations of well-known, everyday objects * throughout the course of his pop art era he focused on four main subjects: product paintings, cartoon paintings, movie stars, and death. * product paintings- showed popular consumer items that were familiar to the average American person, such as Brillo soap pads, Coca-Cola bottles, and the most famous of all, Campbell’s soup cans. * chose products such as these because they were top-selling products in the United States and they were considered important, useful, and economical by consumers * Warhol’s second type of paintings was drawn from comic strips and comic books. Examples of these cartoon paintings include Dick Tracy (1961) and Superman (1960). * began doing productions of Hollywood movie stars, the most well-known being those of Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor * Politics and newsworthy events and imagery were also captured in his art., The Birmingham riots were captured along with several other images of the civil rights movement. Mushroom clouds, electric chairs and police dogs were also depicted.

His signature art style was silkscreened, mass-produced canvas art in variations of color in multiple editions. Andy Warhol used commercial silkscreening to create multiple copies of his art pieces. Based on close-up portraits of his subject material, silkscreen techniques enabled him to produce the same image in multiple color variations. He commonly used bright, upbeat colors to portray the images in the silkscreen art work. While silkscreening was his predominant style later in his career, Andy Warhol also made films, sculptures, album covers and drawings.

...The APA style is based on the Harvard referencing system whereby the date of publication follows the author name(s) and intext references refer to items in the bibliography using the author surname and date of publication, in brackets. Referencing is important in all academic work as it indicates to the reader the sources of your quotations and borrowed ideas. Failure to indicate your sources could easily be taken for plagiarism (literary theft). The purpose of the referencing system is to describe your sources in an accurate and consistent manner and to indicate within the text of your paper where particular sources were used. Don’t get caught out! • • Keep a careful note of all sources used as you prepare your assignments. Record all the details you need about a library book (including page numbers) before you return it – someone else may have the book if you try to go back and check later. Make sure you write down the source details you need on any photocopies you make. Remember to print or save details of any website you want to refer to (your tutor may ask to see this) and record the date when you accessed the information. Make sure you are following the referencing system used in your department. • • • Arrangement of reference list/ bibliography at end of essay • Your reference list/bibliography should be arranged alphabetically by author surname. ...Do I Need a Bibliography? A bibliography is not just “works cited.” It is all the relevant material you drew upon to write the paper the reader holds. If you read any articles or books in preparing you paper, you need a bibliography or footnotes. If you cite the arguments of “critics” and “supporters,” even if you don’t name them or quote them directly, you are likely referring to information you read in books or articles as opposed to information you’ve gathered firsthand, like a news reporter, and so you need a bibliography. If you quote sources and put some of the reference information in the text, you still need a bibliography, so that readers can track down the source material for themselves. If you use footnotes to identify the source of your material or the authors of every quote, you DO NOT need a bibliography, UNLESS there are materials to which you do not refer directly (or if you refer to additional sections of the materials you already referenced) that also helped you reach your conclusions. In any event, your footnotes need to follow the formatting guidelines below. How to Write a Bibliography These guidelines follow those of the American Psychological Association and may be slightly different than what you’re used to, but we will stick with them for the sake of consistency. Notice the use of punctuation. Publication titles may be either italicized or underlined, but not both. Books Books are the bibliography format with which you’re probably most...
