Assignment 1: Set Apart from the Rest

There is always something that sets fast food restaurants apart from each other whether it’s cost, products, or menu options. Five Guys Burgers and Fries is definitely set apart from the rest in a unique way. The first thing that caught my eye when I was looking on their website is that they do not have any freezers inside the restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised because even restaurants that say they use all fresh ingredients have freezers. Five Guys is an exception to this, they do not have freezers they have coolers, because all the food is made fresh to order and never frozen compared to other fast food places, like McDonalds. Simply put the restaurant industry right now is crowded with burger and fries, so Five Guys does burgers and fries better than everyone else. It all started when Jerry Murrell’s sons decided they did not want to attend college. Satisfied with the decision they made he used the money that was going towards tuition to open up a hamburger take-out shop in Virginia. (Boone and Kurtz, 2012, p.78) Columnist from Inc.com states that even though Five Guys only sells burgers, they sell burgers extremely well. (Joiner, 2012) Five Guys puts value in their food by offering fresh made to order burger with up to fifteen free toppings to choose from. Fine ingredients cost more and Five Guys is committed to offering great quality food with quality ingredients. Jerry Murrell, CEO of Five Guys Burgers and Fries stated in an interview with USA TODAY, “I think people will pay a little extra for food if it is worth it.” (Joiner, 2012) Since the beginning of the startup of Five Guys, the restaurant continues to use many of the same vendors they did in 1986. They ensure the quality of their products is top notch and do not compare to other fast food restaurants. The long used statement still is enforced with the company today, “Quality over Quantity.” Another aspect of the business that has continued throughout the years is that they treat their workers with dignity, respect and an important part they are paid well. As stated by Murrell, “Hire well-paid people and they will stay with you.” Usually when you get a job in a fast food establishment if you are not a manager then no insurance is offered to you, but with Five Guys they offer insurance to all employees. They also have incentive programs that award crew members based on secret shoppers’ statistics. Five Guys’ has become very successful in such a short period of time. Factors that have contributed to their success is the quality of the food, simplicity and focusing on what they know. The quality of their food is great from the fresh toppings to the hand-chosen meat. They keep the menu simple it has been the same for numerous years with little changes here and there. Over the years they have tried to change the menu by adding chicken sandwiches and coffee, but it did not mesh too well with the simplicity of the burger and fries. Every aspect of the restaurant is simple from the brown paper bags that the peanuts and the food comes in from the basic red and white tile that surfaces all the restaurants. Al Ries, the author of Focus: The Future of Your Company Depends on It states in his book, “A laser is a weak source of energy. A laser takes a few watts of energy and focuses them in a coherent stream of light. But with a laser you can drill a hole in a diamond or wipe out a cancer.” You create the same effect when you focus on a company. Five Guys’ has and still is creating a powerful, laser-like ability to dominate a market. They have stayed focused by not swaying away from what they do best and that is selling the best burgers and fries cooked to perfection. They do not have timers on the fries or the grill due to the fact it takes time and the correct ingredients to make the perfect french fry. One last factor that makes Five Guys’ successful is the commitment to customer service. Everything from the shouting greeting when you walk in the door to the ordering and pickup process of your food is more than you can ask for in great customer service. Five Guys’ prides itself on its social and ethical practices. All businesses have a code of conduct which is, “a formal statement that defines how the organization expects employees to resolve ethical questions.” (Boone and Kurtz 2012, p.45) Five Guys’ put their integrity in their employees to do what is right in the name of the business. Integrity requires the courage to do what is right despite popular opinion. (Paige 2012) “Five Guys Enterprises LLC and its subsidiaries believe in the importance of international labor and human rights standards and we are committed to lawful, ethical and fair business practices. (Five Guys 2010) Five Guys’ enforce the below policies to make sure all employees are treated fairly throughout their supply chain: * We do not knowingly employ slaves or trafficked persons. We comply with all local, state, federal and international law with respect to labor laws, human rights, slavery, and human trafficking. (Five Guys 2010) * Through our purchasing agreements, we require all suppliers to comply with applicable laws within the country of business. We assess each of our suppliers to ensure that their policies align with our commitment to lawful, ethical and fair business practices. We do not seek verification or conduct audits related specifically to evaluate human trafficking and slavery law compliance of our vendors at this time. (Five Guys 2010) * All Five Guys employees and contractors are required to comply with all applicable laws within the country of business, including laws on human trafficking and slavery, and may be terminated for any violation of law. If Five Guys becomes aware that a supplier has violated any such law, we reserve the right to terminate any such supplier agreement. (Five Guys 2010) * We are committed to further developing our accountability standards and procedures specifically to address our contractor's compliance with the Transparency in Supply Chain Act, as well as an action plan to ensure our company employees and management, who have direct responsibility for supply chain management, receive training on human trafficking and slavery. (Five Guys 2010)
While Five Guys’ does not have a wide variety menu like other fast food restaurants they pride themselves on the quality of their burgers and fries. Surprisingly the menu is trans-fat free, they only use peanut oil, the only use fresh ground beef, and there are over 250,000 possible ways to order a burger at Five Guys’. (Five Guys 2010) Great customer service, great quality food, and a friendly environment make for a great customer experience and keeps customers coming back for more and spreading the word.

Physics Unit 8 Assignment 1

...Unit 8 Assignment 1 20. Because the magnetic force which deflects the electrons is defined by F = q * v x B (v x B is the cross product of the 2 vectors), so: The force vector would always be perpendicular to both the v and B vectors. Since the force is perpendicular to the electron's velocity vector, and thus the path of the electrons, the work done by the field on the electrons is 0, because W = F*d*cos(theta), and theta=90 degrees, therefore cos(theta)=0, and W=0 If W = 0 then there is no change in the kinetic energy of the electrons, thus their speed remains constant; the acceleration provided by the magnetic field was used only to change the direction. 31. Well, it depends upon the Sensitivity setting of the metal detector. As it is clear, the threshold value of the metal detector's sensitivity can be adjusted to suit various needs. so it is obviously set to discard small variations caused by a very small pieces of metal. 34. Christian Beliefs Assignment

...COURSE CODE: THE 205 LECTURER: REV. F AMOLO ASSIGNMENT: THE CHURCH AS THE NEW ISRAEL & THE RELEVANCE OF THE CHURCH RUTO KORIR-12S03EBT004 The “Church” has been in existence for quite a number of centuries, in the book of Acts we see the fellowship of believers coming together in unity “They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer… Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their numbers daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:42 & 46). This illustrates to us that the body of Christ came into existence a little while after he had resurrected into heaven. The church has been described in a number of ways, some in their lack of understanding have described the church as a piece of real estate or just a building where individuals hold their religious masses. But in truth the church is a community of those who believe that Jesus Christ is their Lord and saviour, the church is composed of those who have a common faith and belief. Others have gone on to describe the church as a body, a family, the New Israel and the body of Christ. It has also been described as the spiritual reflection of the society and humanity as a whole. Churches can exist in small and local communities ranging from small to large congregation and the church is...

The thesis statement will be on the subject “A Family Reunion”. The final page holds an outline used to perform this essay. ENGLISH 106 3 A Family Reunion With this assignment, I have chosen “A Family Reunion” to incorporate within my thesis statement. I believe that this topic is best suited for me because my family has never had a happy or joyous reunion that I can remember. The disease of alcoholism runs very deep within the family history, and for that reason, I grew up in a very dysfunctional family setting. With that being stated, I will begin by saying, “Family Reunions are nothing but chaos, arguments, and showing off. Nothing enjoyable or happily memorable ever arises from having times put aside for this said occasion.” My parents were divorced when I was only 4 years old and to this day I still see the burnt images of their final argument instilled within my mind. My mother, rest her soul, had done what she could for our family, regardless of the fact that my father had given absolutely no support for the 9 children. I remember seeing my father, maybe twice, within...

Phil 1010

...24 April 2010 Philosophy 1010 Assignment 3 Descartes theory of doubt rest on the Latin phrase Cogito Ergo Sum. Translated into English the phrase means “I think, therefore I am”. This theory hinges on what is real and what is false; and mimics the branch of philosophy called Metaphysics. Metaphysics questions the reality of environment as does the method of doubt. Descartes skepticism (method of doubt) is termed methodological, because it presents a process which is used to deduce information to arrive at appropriate conclusions which determines or distinguishes reality from fantasy or a state of confusion. Descartes believed that some outcomes were very clear. He provided an analogy utilizing numbers. With numbers there is a pure outcome once the formula is applied or understood correctly. However, with environment or physical movement it becomes difficult to predict the end result. Therefore, to gain a better understanding of reality, Descartes formulates the theory of doubt and creates a check list of three requirements which must be indubitable fulfilled when applied to the method of doubt. The three requirements are 1) impossibility to doubt – meaning something is absolute 2) independent certainty – a theory which cannot be supported by another and 3) an item which exists so that data can be deduced to confirm existence. “Thinking includes doubting, understanding, denying, willing, refusing, and feeling” all key components in analytic phases of questioning surroundings...

Zara–Rapid Fire Fulfillment

...| Zara–Rapid Fire Fulfillment | Unit 1 Assignment 1 | | | Capella University | 1/18/2015 | | Abstract This paper explores the case of Zara–Rapid Fire Fulfillment from research conducted in textbook and on website. Keywords: Supply Chain, Supply Chain Management Zara-Rapid Fire Fulfillment Zara is a company that is known for its speed and being responsive over the cost. While this is not how the industry looks at producing clothing in the marketplace, it has worked very successfully for Zara. Amancio Ortega founded Zara in 1975 with the purpose of understanding the world market and what it means to his fashion merchandise. Ten years after he established Zara, he formed a parent company called Inditex which incorporates other retail concepts and suppliers that he built. Zara began in Spain as a small shop near his factory as he was desperate to find out not to go bankrupt when a buyer backed out of an order that had all of his capital tied up and no prospective buyers in sight. This was the beginning of Zara which is now in 86 countries across the world. The Zara brand is known for the delivery small batches of clothes quickly to the stores. In some cases, this may mean a store will receive new garment orders more than once a week. This does not seem feasible to the clothing industry competitors; however, Zara has been doing this for decades successfully with large profits. The key to this is Zara’s supply chain. Zara controls more...

Case Study

...Case Study: The Forgotten Member Kristin Kovar GM591 – Leadership and Organizational Behavior Dr. Anne Hallcom Part 1 Group Development: The group is currently in the norming stage. The first meeting the group went through the forming stage by introducing themselves and talking about their schedules. They joked around and had a good time and started to bond together. They worked through some dysfunctional issues during the next week or two when Mike became upset that he felt excluded from the group. The group is starting to come together and function well together except for Mike. All members of the group are doing their share of the work and helping each other out but Mike is still not pulling his own weight and seems to be distant from the group. I think he feels resentment towards the group because they are close and working well together but he feels like they are excluding him so he isn’t pulling his own weight to get back at them. If Mike were more integrated into the group and working well with them, I would say the group is in the performing stage but this won’t happen until the group comes together to make Mike apart of the group and Mike contributes more to the group. If Christine understood the stages of team development, she could have led the group to become a high performance team. She had many opportunities to make this happen. The first opportunity was in the initial meeting when the group was determining the best times to meet. Mike told the group...

Cisco Internal Governance Case Study

...Background In 1995, John Chambers joined Cisco Systems as president and CEO. After six years under the supervision of Chambers, the company went from generating $2.2 billion in annual sales to $22.3 billion. As a result of the market downturn in 2001, the company suffered its first loss and laid off 18% of its workforce. Chambers quickly realized Cisco was in need of significant organizational restructuring if Cisco were to survive and thrive the downtown. This change shifted the company from a decentralized firm that only focused its three work silos of Marketing, Engineering and Sales to segregated and specific customer groups to a centralized firm that focused on collaboration and relevant technologies for given customer groups. This shift in organizational restructuring significantly reduced product and resource redundancies – a major contributing success factor for Cisco’s market position today. The Problem The implementation of the cross-functional business councils greatly strengthened both Cisco’s competitive position as well as their organizational culture. However, Cisco now faces the problem of how to sustain and implement the new internal governance system across new and expanding business lines within the company in addition to maintaining the new collaborative culture while retaining its customer-centricity focus. Adjustments will need to be made to ensure that systems can be scaled to address new market transitions. The three councils that were originally...

This major helps student expands their knowledge and social skills revolving around sports, events and tourism.
