Assignment on Situation and Setting

...Approaches to Literature Assignment 2. Situation and Setting I. Read the following poems carefully several times. A. Situations i. “To a Daughter Leaving Home” (p. 736) ii. “On My First Son” (p. 1096) II. Examine one group of poems that interests you the most and answer the following questions. B. Group A iii. Who is speaking? To whom is the speaker speaking? Is there an auditor in the poem, or simply an audience outside of it? What is happening? The title of the first poem, “To a Daughter Leaving Home,” reveals some information of the setting and the situation. We can see that it might be a parent saying something or even writing a letter to his or hers daughter who is about to leave their family. In addition, according to the poet’s gender, it isn’t hard for us to assume that “a parent” is actually a mother. In this poem, it seems like the mother is speaking to her daughter, but to me, I think it’s more like a mother’s monologue, trying to express her love and blessing to her daughter, since her daughter has been “pumping, pumping / for your[her] life.”(line 18-19) As for the other poem “On My First Son,” apparently the speaker is a grieving father and in some ways, we can even tell that the speaker is not any other father who also lose their kids. The poem is autobiographical and the speaker is actually Ben Jonson himself. In the poem, lines like “Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy; / My sin...

...Immaculate Conception Cathedral A Roman Catholic cathedral located in Quezon City, Metro Manila, the Philippines. It is the see of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Cubao. It was built in 1950 by the Society of the Divine Word and belonged to the order until 1990 when the Archdiocese of Manila took over its administration. In 2003, it became the cathedral when the Diocese of Cubao was erected. The present rector of the cathedral is Rev. Fr. Ariston L. Sison, Jr., SCSL History Since 1935, the SVD priests of Christ the King Mission Seminary attended to the pastoral and spiritual needs of a limited farming community around Manga Road in Cubao by first celebrating mass in a small chapel near the present Cubao roundabout. Fr. Henry Demond, SVD then celebrated Mass in the residence of a certain Carbonell family, before to a quonset mess hall on what are now Spence and Brooklyn streets. The building was abandoned by the combined US-Philippine Commonwealth Armed Forces. As with other agrarian communities, farmers tilling the surrounding rice paddies invoked San Isidro Labrador, so the chapel built there was dedicated to him and belonged to Sacred Heart Parish in Kamuníng. While teaching as theology professor at Christ the King Mission Seminary (and later as Prefect of Scholastics), Fr. Ambrosio Manaligod and Ronnie Ganancias consistently lent a helping hand to the pastoral work of the parish especially in the direction of lay organisations. Economic Hitman

...Confessions of an Economic Hit Man By John Perkins Preface Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, U.S. Agency for International Development, and other foreign “aid” organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet's natural resources. Their tools include fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization. I should know; I was an EHM. I wrote that in 1982, as the beginning of a book with the working title Conscience of an Economic Hit Man. The book was dedicated to the presidents of two countries, men who had been my clients, whom I respected and thought of as kindred spirits—Jaime Roldós, president of Ecuador, and Omar Torrijos, president of Panama. Both had just died in fiery crashes. Their deaths were not accidental. They were assassinated because they opposed that fraternity of corporate, government, and banking heads whose goal is global empire. We EHMs failed to bring Roldós and Torrijos around, and the other type of hit men, the CIA-sanctioned jackals who were always right behind us, stepped in. I was persuaded to stop writing that book. I started it four more times during the next twenty years. On each occasion, my decision to...

Defining Words Project

...the meaning of a word. Looking up the synonyms and antonyms, understanding what the root word means, finding the primary root in Hebrew and Greek can bring such a depth of understanding to what the Holy Spirit means in a Bible verse. And by diligent study of words, you usually "get it." That's a challenge but we are commanded to do exactly this! 2 Timothy 2:15 “ Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” This assignment is based on six words that I have researched and defined according to their Biblical use in both the Old Testament and New Testament. The words I have selected include the following: I chose three from the Old Testament being -praise, honor, rejoice and three of the New Testament including- bow down, shout and joy. The first word I researched was praise. Praise is defined as follows: praz (tehillah, "psalm," "praise," todhah, "confession" "thanksgiving," shabhach, "to praise"...

Noli Me Tángere Term Paper

...José Rizal, a Filipino nationalist and medical doctor, conceived the idea of writing a novel that would expose the ills of Philippine society after reading Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. He preferred that the prospective novel express the way Filipino culture was backward, anti-progress, anti-intellectual, and not conducive to the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment. He was then a student of medicine in the Universidad Central de Madrid. In a reunion of Filipinos at the house of his friend Pedro A. Paterno in Madrid on 2 January 1884, Rizal proposed the writing of a novel about the Philippines written by a group of Filipinos. His proposal was unanimously approved by the Filipinos present at the party, among whom were Pedro, Maximino and Antonio Paterno, Graciano López Jaena, Evaristo Aguirre, Eduardo de Lete, Julio Llorente and Valentin Ventura. However, this project did not materialize. The people who agreed to help Rizal with the novel did not write anything. Initially, the novel was planned to cover and describe all phases of Filipino life, but almost everybody wanted to write about women. Rizal even saw his companions spend more time gambling and flirting with Spanish women. Because of this, he pulled out of the plan of co-writing with others and decided to draft the novel alone. Plot Having completed his studies in Europe, young Juan Crisóstomo Ibarra y Magsalin comes back to the Philippines after a 7-year absence. In his honor, Don Santiago delos Santos...
