...Asthma HCS 245 Rajdeep Grewal September 22, 2014 Asthma is a chronic long-term lung disease that inflames and suppresses the airways. Asthma causes recurring periods of wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing. It can affect people of all ages but usually starts during childhood. In children it is known to often refer to eczema in which a child might suffer from skin inflammation. People suffering from asthma will have attacks that will make it difficult to exhale then inhale which can cause over inflammation of the chest and with impaired lung infections. Most asthma attacks can be treated by drugs, inhalers and injections. Primary prevention in asthma can be reduced or avoided by personal exposure to primary risk factors to be started during pregnancy and childhood. It is beyond the scope of work and ability of any health care system to achieve changes in environmental standards, which are very important in reducing the population's exposure to disease determinants and pollution risks. Also, the community needs to be involved actively in prevention. A healthy lifestyle, such as eating healthier, doing exercise regularly and by avoiding tobacco and allergens. Secondary prevention in asthma can be done by early detection of occupational asthma which is vital to prevent further progression. According to COPD, they have suggested many programs for early detection of COPD would be cost effective. Even though asthma cannot be cured it can be treated...

...look for the device that had often relieved your symptoms of asthma, knowing if you do not find your inhaler you could be flopping on the floor until consciousness is lost. Some asthmatics say it feels like your trying to breathe through a straw. This feeling is due to the inflammation caused by a trigger that causes the narrowing of the airway leading to the chest tightness, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. Asthma is the most common chronic disease affecting people today. Asthma is described as an epidemic rather than and endemic because it is not restricted by age, sex, racial group or region. Asthma is widespread throughout the world but higher rates of prevalence are seen in African Americans. Asthma can affect anyone, despite the development of new treatment options; asthma remains a major health problem in the United States. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), about 15 million Americans have or carry a diagnosis of asthma and it is the third leading cause of preventable hospitalizations in the United States. About 500,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths occur annually from asthma, and the mortality rate continues to rise. This rise is especially dramatic in the African-American community, despite the absence of a known racial preference for asthma. It is now well established that under treatment and inappropriate treatments are the leading contributors to asthma morbidity and mortality in the United States. The African-American...

...Living with Asthma missing works cited The weather in Boston is just beginning to feel cooler as Maeve Vaillancourt, a Northeastern University sophomore rushes to her first class of the day. Although she is already behind schedule, she huddles in a corner to take a dose of her Abuterol inhaler, then finishes her ten-minute walk and slips into class late. “I hate taking my inhaler in public, because it is embarrassing, but after quick walks like that, I need to or else I feel as if I can’t breathe,” said Vaillancourt. Vaillancourt has been suffering from asthma[->0] since she was diagnosed at the age of 9. She is one of 18.2 million adults age 18 years and older with this illness according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Over seven million children ages 0-17 have asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease of the respiratory system[->1] that leads to inflammation of the bronchial tubes, resulting in difficulty carrying air to the lungs. Asthma greatly affects an individual’s breathing, and can place severe restrictions on daily life. During asthma attacks, which may be triggered by weather, allergens, exercise, the individuals’ ability to breathe becomes difficult. As a young, active college student[->2], Vaillancourt’s battle with asthma plays a role in her day-to-day life, beyond just her walks to class. “I don’t think of inhalers as medicine. I bring it out everywhere; itis like a wallet, or cash,” said Vaillancourt, who suffers from mild...

...ASTHMA in Adolescents and Adults ASTHMA in Adolescents and Adults Susan Corbridge and Thomas C. Corbridge ASTHMA in Adolescents and Adults Many individuals suffer from a respiratory condition known as asthma and experience the acute and sometimes chronic effects of this disorder. This disorder often presents itself in an individual exhibiting the hallmark signs and symptoms of breathlessness, wheezing and coughing, due to the airway wall being inflamed and smooth muscle bronchospams. At this time it is imperative to assess the situation and take the appropriate action. Research shows that there is various causes to why inflammation and bronchospasm obstruct the airway, making it difficult to pin point any one cause. This article states that atopy has been identified as a risk factor, as well as exposure to allergens can increase or induce an asthma attack (GINA: the Global Initiative for Asthma, Global strategy for asthma management and prevention). There are many factors that can affect any one person with this condition, such as heredity, obesity, smoke, exercise, upper respiratory tract infections, perfumes and certain occupations can trigger respiratory distress with an asthmatic episode. There are other treatment considerations that evaluate and treating other conditions...

...The most alarming factor about pollution is that it is almost entirely the result of human action. One of the most polluted nations is China; contrarily, though many Americans fight to protect the environment from such harm, there still exists pollution in our nation, today. Unfortunately, pollution affects everyone; however, children are suffering everywhere from their lack of knowledge of how to protect themselves from such harm, as well as the fact that much of the detrimental effects of pollution in children’s health occurs before they are even born, when they are still in the womb. Negative reports of reproductive health in China prompted scientists to look further. The effects of pollution on the development of children in China and America, though different, are comparable. Pollution in China has increased due to the rapid industrialization of the nation in the past 30 years. According to the World Bank reports in 2007, “of the 20 most polluted cities in the world, cities in China account for 16 of them.” And according to Environment and Reproductive Health in China “Air quality in China is among the worst in the world, with air pollution levels in many cities well above permissible limits, and half of the water resources in China are considered too polluted for human use.” (Weihua et al. 2012) Reproductive health in China continues to be considerably negatively affected as industrialization grows. Due to the abundant population in China and the low working wage, China was...

Aside from keeping kids out of school, it can also keep kids on the sidelines and away from physical activities such as soccer, mush ball, and basketball.” Asthma also affects the public by “causing two million emergency visits. Not only does it cause emergency visits but it also causes employees to lose about 14 million work days per year.” At the rate medication is improving, in my opinion, the chances of preventing and stopping asthma completely is a possibility. Particulate Matter is a form of air pollutant which if left uncheck will trigger asthma attacks. “Particulate Matter consist of dust, fly ash, soot, diesel exhaust particles,...

...Asthma is a chronic disease of the lungs that affects millions of children in America. Millions of children are diagnosed with the disease each year, and are frequent visitors of the countries’ emergency rooms. Asthma is Greek for panting, which is what asthmatics experience when they experience an asthma attack (Eisele, 2003). According to Neergard (2006), more than 20 million Americans have asthma, and the chronic lung disease is on the rise. This paper will discuss the, causes, symptoms, treatments and the demographics of children being diagnosed with the disease. In order to understand the severity of the disease called asthma, one must understand it causes. These causes lead to the symptoms that have thus far caused the disease to kill 5,000 people every year and accounts for 2 million emergency-room visits (Neergaard, 2006). Though there are treatments for the disease widely available, certain causes of the diseases aren’t concretely founded, causing asthma to remain a mysterious disease to doctors. In the following we will go on a journey to discover the mysterious, precarious reality of children diagnosed with asthma. According to Eisele (2003), five thousand people die of it every year in the United States. Currently it's the sixth most common chronic condition in the nation. Three times as many people have it now as in 1980. Some 6 million of them are children. For children, asthma is the most common chronic disorder, the leading cause of missed school, and the leading...

It is a reversible obstruction to air flow and increase bronchial responsiveness to a variety of stimuli, both allergic and environmental” (p. 143). Also, Durstine et. al noted “this disorder has affected 22.2 million people in America and 6.5 million are children. Asthma is one of the leading chronic childhood diseases” (p. 143). Tem million of people missed work days a year because of asthma and the estimated cost are the healthcare is of $19 billion a year. Asthma is a major cause of missed school days for children and parents to missed work because of their children. Many adults and older children have several respiratory infection each year that may them visit the primary care centers; those who suffers from asthma have exacerbation of his or her medical condition because of this reason (Akinbani, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to analyze the prevalence of asthma in the Hispanic population and the importance of the recognition of risk factors for asthma symptoms, proper assessment, and treatment in the primary care setting. In order to treat this population is crucial to know their culture, believes, and practices to received their cooperation in the prevention and care of their medical condition. Hispanic population traces their ancestry to countries that were previously under Spanish rule, including Mexico, large part of Central and South American, and some Caribbean islands. ...Luis. He has severe asthma problems and has to carry an asthma inhaler with him at all times to prevent the possibility of an asthma attack. As he is going through check-in, a big, muscular white man in a security jacket orders him to step aside and show him his belongings, especially the asthma inhaler he is carrying on grounds that Ronaldo’s asthma inhaler contains cocaine. Like Ronaldo, many minorities are stopped more often at airports and other locations for possession of illegal drugs because of America’s war on drugs. Why specifically does American society target minorities for illegal drugs? Minorities are more likely to be accused of smuggling drugs because they tend to come from enemy countries, have on average a lower socio-economic status, and are very associated with crime in the media. Minorities are more likely to be framed for illegal drug smuggling because of their association with America’s political enemies. Edward Said defines the Orient as America’s “contrasting image, idea, personality, experience” (Said 87). Since the Orient is America’s “contrasting image”, America has always attempted to put an “umbrella of Western hegemony” over the Orient. This is because America, according to Edward Said, views the Far East as something is very strange and different, or “a place of romance, exotic beings, haunting memories and landscapes” (Said 87). Not only does America view the Far East as a place of “haunting memories and landscapes”, America according to Benedict...

...Asthma HCS/245 May 23, 2015 Asthma What is Asthma? Asthma is a chronic disease that obstructs the flow of air, the obstruction is reversible. What is Asthma? • Inflammation (swelling) • Mucous in the airways • Tightening in muscles around the airways Asthma is most common chronic disease in childhood, almost 9 million children in America have asthma, (Over 100,000 in Wisconsin). Children under 6 years old have the highest rates for hospital admissions, this is the #1 reason children are admitted into hospitals and this is also one of the main reasons children are absent from school, children miss about 7 days of school due to asthma. Causes of Asthma: (There is no one single onset of Asthma) • Hereditary • Exposure to or not enough exposure to “triggers: • Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke • Air pollution Asthma is more common in families where someone already has the condition. If one parent has asthma, the chance of their child developing asthma is approximately double that of children whose parents don't have asthma. We also know that a mother has a greater risk of passing on asthma than a father, though the reasons are not clear. Environmental Tobacco Smoke is the #1 trigger of asthma, but also studies have shown that exposure to ETS can cause the onset of the disease of asthma. Having a plan and goals of asthma management is the next step that should be taken for children and adults after being diagnosed with this chronic respiratory...
