...Playing sports is a risk of safety for many reasons. Every year thousands of athletes get injuries that impacts their lives, their futures, or can even result in death. 3.6 million people a year get concussion, over 1.6 of them are athletes. There has always been controversy over cheerleading being a sport, or if football players get more injuries than cheerleaders. Our research question is do more high school football players or cheerleaders get the most concussions. Our research question would be a non-biased study, we would use the population of North Carolina high schools with athletic trainers, the variable is the amount of concussions that each group has. The data collection method we would use is a study. We plan to collect the data...

...For my career development research project I decided to shadow Candice Jackson (College of Charleston Women’s Basketball Head Coach), Amanda Taylor (Athletic Trainer for Women’s Basketball at the College of Charleston), and Marc Pronto (Strength and Conditioning Coach for both Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams at the College of Charleston). I selected job shadowing because it is a very useful activity that allows a person to explore a career that they are interested in by spending time with a professional working in that field. It provided me more insight rather than just reading a job description or even asking an employee to describe what they do. While job shadowing, I was able to ask questions and experience the trials, triumphs, and normal day-to-day activities that Marc Pronto, Candice Jackson, and Amanda Taylor might experience while working in their jobs. I was able to experience how the professional approaches the job, the necessary social cooperation, standard operating procedures, and the tools that I need in order to perform the job successfully. Normally, job shadowing usually lasts only a day, but in...

...and Sven C. Voelpel. The journal puts forth the following research question; Does diversity training increase team creativity reflecting in better team cohesion and effectiveness but only for teams with less positive beliefs of diversity. The method in which the research is conducted is through a qualitative study whereas diversity beliefs questionnaires (online) were completed by 192 participants of 41 different nationalities. All of the participants were undergraduate students who were enrolled in an international university located in Germany. One of the gaps in the study was that the study failed to understand the long term effects of diversity training along with addressing the effects of it on individuals who have not been previously exposed to diverse conditions or diverse individuals. Additionally, the diversity training was only conducted for persons within an academic setting and may suggest that people outside of academia would respond much differently to diversity training. The findings of the research suggest and support the idea that a lack of diversity in organizations may be a liability and that providing diversity training to teams and organizations with a little or no diversity can achieve positive results but at the same time, may result in a reduction of creative performance. The opposite was supported for organizations who were composed of a high amount of diverse individuals. The research also suggests that there is a positive effect of having mandatory...

...in football, they are common across the entire sports spectrum. A concussion occurs when the head is hit directly or indirectly, causing a chemical disturbance within the brain that can have immediate consequences. An estimated 1.6 to 3.8 million concussions occur each year (CDC 2012). The numbers will always be very broad when it comes to concussions because so many athletes refuse to take themselves out of their games and a majority of the time they neglect to report any concussion symptoms to a trainer or coach. Lets take a look at some of the factors that contribute to athletes neglecting their concussions. A university study by Arkansas that included over 130 athletes showed that athletes are still very careless when it comes to concussions. Over one third of the athletes reported having concussion like symptoms at some point during their athletic career. What’s more staggering is the fact that more than half of those who reported having symptoms did not tell a coach or trainer for fear of missing games (Medical...

...Environmental Analysis Paper Executive Summary In today society, how many students are informed of how to stay healthy and how to properly develop one’s body? R.T. Athletics is a health and strengthening athletic program that help informs and develop student physical attributes. In order to incorporate this program management has to forgo an environmental analysis. Environmental analysis is one of the contingency factors that have to be taken into account in designing an organization. In our research R.T. athletics has gather that Environmental analysis of the forces and trends in customer profiling provides sound knowledge of the demographics, personalities, and physical surroundings, as well as, purchasing power and behaviors of customers, (Pearce & Robinson, 2011). Determining the competitive position of other athletic training agencies within the Las Vegas area assists R.T. Athletics in creating unique services and care that sets them apart from other agencies. Identifying what has and has not worked for its competitors also provides the agency with insight into what methods are detrimental, and which ones are successful. R.T. Athletics managers conduct bi-annual assessments within the sports athletic industry. Therefore, understanding the macroeconomic factors involve the creditworthiness of the business as well as interest rates, inflation rates, and other trends affecting the current status of the economy, (Pearce & Robinson, 2011). ...be Screened Better for Heart Defects? By Margaret Anne Rich A Research Project Proposal Submitted to the Graduate School of Northwestern State University of Louisiana In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Science in Health and Human Performance With concentration in Sport Administration April 2013 Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine if college athletes that are predisposed to heart defects develop a heart defect during their athletic career. The researcher will conduct a causal comparative study to prove that college athletes that are predisposed to heart defects develop one during their athletic career. The study will examine college athletes that are predisposed to heart defects and do not realize they are at risk for possible development of a heart defect during their athletic career. Knowing an athlete’s family and medical history could help prevent a great deal of possible health conditions. Athletes have a higher risk of developing a higher risk if they are predisposed. There are athletes that do not realize that they are predisposed to heart defects and that they could develop one. ...Career Research Paper I have designed this assignment as a step by step guide to walk my students through the research process. Of course, you may adjust it as you feel is necessary according to the level of students you are working with. This project explains in detail everything they need to research, as well as, giving them real world insight into what to expect in a career in terms of education, job duties and responsibilities and income. I begin by having them take a reality check quiz on the Jump Start Coalition website. This little quiz helps them determine how much money they will need to earn in order to live the lifestyle they would like to have. This income amount in turn helps open their eyes to the type of job necessary to achieve that income and what amount of education is involved. It was a real wake up call for many of my students. In this package I have also included a grading rubric for the project and a list of possible career choices for their assignment. Student Instructions You will be writing a research paper on a career chosen from the attached list. Think carefully about which career you chose to research. Read through these directions and the requirements for this assignment BEFORE making your choice. Materials needed for this project - ---note cards (preferably 3x5 lined) ---folder with pockets to keep all research materials in ---access to internet and reference books A. ...Pay to Play: Economic Impact of Paying College Athletes 1. Purpose of Research & Analysis On April 25, 2014, the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, D.C., granted Northwestern University's request to review the decision made by the regional office recognizing the school's football players as employees. In mid-April, Northwestern football players voted as a team on whether or not to unionize, but the votes will only be opened if the board ends up siding with the players, which may take at least a couple of months. Ultimately, the Northwestern football players are determining their fate through this secret ballot and their decision to form the first union amongst college athletes—a decision that has the ability to change the landscape of American college sports. If granted the right to unionize, the Northwestern football team will actually have the ability to bargain over their conditions and it is expected that this could ultimately lead to requesting salary compensation for their efforts. In light of these recent historic discussions, it is critical to analyze not only the ethical, but also the economic impact of such potential situations. My research paper has been structured to shed some light into the challenging and complicated discussions that continue to occur around this topic. Specifically, I have broken my research and analysis into three key topics. First, I explore whether or not there is an underlying issue with the current state, from an economic perspective...

The athlete tends to grab the easiest on the go food for their meal; little do they know that this lack of nutritious food can affect their performance. Student athletes need regular well balanced meals and snacks to maintain the high energy demands of training, competition and the rigor of an academic program (Ziegler et al 2005) showed how the increased competitiveness of the sport raises concerns about the health of these athletes .For example nutrient intake was found to possibly be influenced by factors like; lack of time, hectic training schedule and increased emphasis on physical features, such as leanness of and body image. An increased interest and availability of nutritional information seems to be on the rise ,however, it’s unclear if athletes are more knowledgeable about the role of nutrition on athletic performance .Professionals can help...

...to focus my research on the was the question, Do athletes psychologically get affected by external pressures, especially fan pressure? This has lead me to a 3 month journey to try to find an answer to my question through research, interviews, and site visits. Sports is a topic I have strong passion for and a desire to learn more about it, which made my focused research question perfectly suited for me. As an athlete at Randolph School I don't play games with big crowds or have many of the external pressures professional athletes have, but even with just the parents in the stands and several of my friends I feel more nervous playing than I ever do in practice. So I feel as an athlete myself I have some background informations about this topic, but yet there were a lot more unknowns I wanted to know about and a lot more work to be done for me to come to a definitive conclusion. At the beginning of February I started my journey by doing countless hours of exhausting research, interviewing people, attempting my own experiment, and going to a sold out Alabama basketball game to find out if I can come to definitive answer to how athletes are affected by external pressures. One of the first real scholarly research papers I read was a research paper called Cheers vs. Jeers: Effects of Audience Feedback on Individual Athletic Performance. This research paper is highly regarded as one of the most extensive and well constructed research papers on how fans affect athletic performance....

...Question 1 Drawing on the theories and concepts of family influences on athletic development presented in Study topic 2, discuss how the Romeao parents can promote an effective environment for their children’s athletic development. Introduction In answering the question above I will first reflect upon the family unit and then go on to discuss the support currently offered by the parents of the Romeao children and how this support may affect the children’s athletic psychological development. I will draw upon the concepts of achievement theory (Dweck, 1999 and Nicholls, 1984, 1989) and Eccles (Eccles et al 1983, Eccles 1993) expectancy-value theory discussing the family influences on the Romeao children’s goal orientations. The Romeao family are introduced through a video with transcripts from the mother, father and some of the children. Romeo, a boy, is the first born, Venus a girl the second born, the video concentrates mostly on their athletic development in their chosen sports. The Romeao family have a further 4 children, two girls, Angel and Isis and two boys, Achilles and a baby, Caesar. Good intro. Nice signposting Discussion I feel the Father, Tony, has determined that some of his children will be given what he feels is a strong supportive and motivating climate to influence them to compete at an elite level in a chosen sport. His reasons for this seem, on the surface, quite selfish. He desires to be the father of an Olympic champion and he thinks if his son becomes...
