During a mental health crisis the nurse assesses the patient and their problem. They identify the precipitating event that brought the person to the unit, considers influencing factors that caused the crisis, and plans the appropriate interventions for care (performs a MSE and suicide risk assessment). Based on their risk factors the patient could be placed in a private room in the back of the unit on continuous observation, or q’x’min observations etc. The patient’s chart will also state if they were admitted as a voluntary or involuntary patient. I found these factors to have a significant influence on my ability to connect and establish relationships with patients as it dependent on their reason for admission. Autonomy and nonmaleficence are two of the ethical principles stated in the code of ethics.
