...Can the attempt to create a utopia bring more conflict or bring eternal peace? The concept of a perfect utopia is vividly expressed in the book, “Looking Backwards” by Edward bellani. This book takes place around the time 2000 where a perfect utopia was created, the type that believes in a society that has no class struggle. Interestingly, this utopia was created while Jilian West was alseep, so the start of the utopia is unclear. Throughout the story Jilian West discovers how the utopia became this unbelievable place where people only dream about. However, there are a lot of aspect about this utopia that Jilian does not agree with. Despite having an improved society with less crime and some equality I think this utopia has many greatness and weaknesses but in the end I would not want to live in a utopian society. The society where there is only a common warehouse to buy everything from is one that I can appreciate and admire. This method of one warehouse allows people to save time and expenses. On the other hand, it still has its flaws where the cities that are far from the main warehouse receive things much later than the closer cities. As West asks, “about the variety in the size and cost of house, how is it … with the fact that all citizens have the same income?” I fear that every family would try to have more members in their family to receive more, resulting in overpopulated cities. This in return can lead to chaos as civilians might fight for land. One of the many great...

Classification of Standards War: 1. Rival Evolutions Technologies from both parties involved in the war are backwards compatible but mutually incompatible. E.g. Blu-ray Vs HD-DVD. Both players can play DVD format but cannot play each other. 2. Rival Revolutions Both technologies are neither backwards compatible nor mutually compatible. E.g. GSM Vs CDMA. 3. ...08 March 2010 The American Dream, like any idea that has stood the test of time, appeals to so many people because it is largely left open to personal interpretation. One person’s idea of the American Dream can be vastly different from another’s, and for some it may even change temporally. In, “Looking Backward: 2000-1887,” the protagonist, Julian West, finds himself torn between two different American Dreams: the American Dream of the capitalists of the nineteenth century, and the American Dream of an enlightened twenty first century metropolis. The only surviving heir to a great family inheritance, West is comfortably adjusted to life in America in the 1880s despite the unsavory politics, rabid economics, growing gap between rich an poor, and frequent labor strikes, all of which threaten to arrest industry and devastate the young nation. After a bizarre experience with “animal hypnotism,” West sleeps for over 113 years and awakes in the year 2000 in the home of Dr. Leete. West finds that the new society has no greed, no corruption, no poverty, no crime, and no war. A society in which everyone’s laundry is professionally laundered, meals are professionally prepared in public kitchens, everyone gets a quality education, working hours are short, and retirement comes at the age of forty-five. Everything is as in a utopia. This utopia, no doubt, represented the aspirations of the book’s nineteenth century author, Edward Bellamy. Channeled through...

...IEEE 802.11AC 1 Charles E. Clay jr New Trending Technology Paper Mr.Larsen Comp 2 14 January 2013 IEEE 802.11AC New and Improved Wireless Technology The new technology for your wireless home and business network is almost here! I’m talking about the IEEE 802.11AC which is going to be faster and capable of handling more of your High-definition video transfers with speeds equal to a gigabit ethernet. This is nice if you like technology but at what cost should I change my networking devices? The benefits are great but now we know neither the cost nor the date when gear will be available for the business world. With the 802.11ac technology we can only assume that this will cause most companies, who make our end-user products like laptops, tablets and servers for the business world, are going to need to accommodate this new addition to the wireless world. AC technology will have the capabilities to expand its bandwidth from mandatory 80 mhz to 160 mhz which doubles the network access. It also has MIMO and the MU-MIMO, which stands for multiple in and multiple out and multi user multiple in and multiple out. This allows for the communication between terminals, which is better for signal use to the IEEE 802.11AC 2 system. 802.11ac will give the end user whether its a laptop, handheld device or server more access to its network by doubling from 4 spatial streams to 8 spatial. Although the old b/g/n networking routers are very well capable of handling...

...The new USB 3.1 adds a 10 Gbps speed mode that uses a more efficient data encoding and will deliver more than twice the effective data of existing Super Speed USB over enhanced, fully backward compatible USB connectors and cables. The specification extends the existing Super Speed mechanical, electrical, protocol and hub definition while maintaining compatibility with existing USB 3.0 software stacks and device class protocols as well as with existing 5 Gbps hubs and devices and USB 2.0 products. In January 2013, the USB group had a press release revealing plans to update USB 3.0 to 10 Gbit/s, effectively putting it on par with Thunderbolt by mid-2013. The USB 3.1 specification was released introducing a faster transfer mode called "Super Speed USB 10 Gbps"; its logo features a Super speed (stylized as SUPERSPEED+) caption. The USB 3.1 standard increases the signaling rate to 10 Gbit/s, doubling that of USB 3.0, and reduces line encoding overhead to just 3% by changing the encoding scheme to 128b/132b. Though, some initial tests demonstrated usable transfer speeds of only 7.2 Gbit/s, suggesting a 30% overall overhead. The USB 3.1 standard is backward compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. Using three power profiles of those defined in the USB Power Delivery Specification, it lets devices with larger energy demands request higher currents and supply voltages from compliant hosts – up to 2 A at 5 V (for a power consumption of up to 10 W), and optionally up to 5 A at either 12 V (60...

...affirmative action in India has started perhaps by Vice-Roy Curzon in 1905 by banning the employment of Hindu Bengalis in the government services; the official argument was that they were too advanced and taking away job opportunity from others particularly the Muslims. Later it was extended in the military services by giving preferential treatments for Muslims and Sikhs branding them as martial races. Reservations in government jobs were introduced in 1918 in Mysore in favor of a number of castes and communities that had little share in the administration. In 1909 and in 1919 similar reservation system was introduced for the Muslims in British India. In 1935, for pure political reason the British government has provided job reservation for the backward castes. The real idea was to divide the population of India into several warring groups along religious, ethnic and caste lines by giving special rights so that future India would be divided and weak. A number of prominent politicians had acted as the agents of the British Raj to implement that line of action; the most prominent of...

...OTHER BACKWARD CLASSES The term backward casses has not been defined properly, either by the sociologists or by the Constitutio-makers.The backward classes are a large mixed category of persons with boundaries that are both unclear and elastic. They seem to comprise roughly one-third of the toatal population of the country. They consist of three main categories-the scheduled castes, the scheduled tribes and the other backward classes. The scheduled castes and scheduled tribes are comparatively better defined and they form roughly 22% of the total population according to the 1971 census. The other backward classes is a residual category.Their position is highly ambigous and it is not possible t give an exact statemen of their numbers. Defintion of other backward classes Though the term backward classes is popularly used by sociologists. It is not defined properly.Still for our purpose of study,we may define it in the following way: 1)Justice K. Subba Rao,former chief justice of india, defined “backward classes” as—“an ascertainable and identifiable group of persons based on caste, religion, race, language, occupation and such others, with definite characteristics of backwardness in various aspects of human existence-social,cultural,economic,political and such others”. 2)We can generally define backward classes as those social groups or classes or castes which are characterise by low leteracy and lack of education, poverty, exploitation of labour,non-representation in services and...

...Lauryn Moore Mizzo Drama 1 Quick Change Artist Have everyone sit in a circle and choose one person to be the quick change artist. Have the artist go out of sight and change something on him/her self that is visible(i.e.-put shorts on backwards, change hair, tie/untie shoes...). When the artist is done, have him/her walk into the middle of the circle and turn around slowly to give everyone a chance to see what has been changed. Then go around the circle having each person guess what has been changed. The first person to guess correctly is the next artist. Catch a Story Have a ball or (better) a beanbag. Begin a story. Throw it to the person who must continue the story. This is better than dragging around the circle and shy people can get rid of the story after only one word. A variation on this is “fortunately, unfortunately”. Each person must add a sentence, changing the sentence of the main character. E.g. Unfortunately the plane’s engines failed. Fortunately the pilot had a parachute. Unfortunately the parachute would not open. Fortunately their was a haystack underneath. Etc. Martha’s Game Group stands outside a designated performance space. One person runs into the space, forms her body into a statue and announces what she is, as in "I'm a tree." Instantly the next person runs on and forms something else in the same picture. "I'm a bench under the tree." The next person further adds to the picture. "I'm a bum on the bench." "I'm a dog peeing on the tree."...

...abuse you verbally and physically until all of your normal feelings and values are reduced to dust. Leaving you aware that you have changed, and able to describe the change, you find yourself questioning the person you were previously. First thing you know you're saluting. This story is a cleverly disorienting journey through a landscape of danger, shock, hilarity, and vibrant local color. Nothing is predictable or familiar within this irresistibly bizarre world. You do not merely enter a theater to see Pulp Fiction: you go down a rabbit hole. Theater is an actor moving through time and space, telling a story. In Quentin Terintenio¹s, Pulp Fiction, the actors portray savvy modern-day gangsters and the story is three stories told in backwards order. To say the least this not your average story. The theme of the story is redemption, and the journey to achieve that redemption. The characters are colorfully multidimensional and most importantly they are believable. The language of the story is street-smart and confident, like the characters. There is no main plot, only mirror plots that are reflections of each other. The theme of redemption is portrayed by two of the main characters of the story. These characters seek redemption and a new way of life, they each desire a more virtuous life. Butch (Bruce Willis) wants to pull off one last scam and then run away with the woman he loves. He seeks forgiveness and redemption through the future birth of his child. He wants his...

...I would like to tell you a quick story. This is a story about a girl who went against everything our culture defines as normal today. Historically speaking, for the past few decades, for a girl, most people would assume that life would take the following path… graduate from high school, go to college, get a job, get married, then have kids. Fair to say? (Pause) This girl graduated from high school as planned. Then she went on to college as planned… then her path took a LITTLE detour. She decided that being with her boyfriend back home was more important than college. So, after the fall semester, she left college and got an apartment with her boyfriend. They both had to work a couple of jobs to pay the bills. After a little while, they realized that maybe this wasn’t so cool, in fact, it was pretty hard. So they both moved back to their parent’s homes. This girl decided that she really did need that college education after all, so she went back to school, but this time she stayed local and still lived at home. And here is where her life took a BIG detour. See, she found out she was pregnant. Once again, she finished the fall semester and left college. Not long after, at 19 years old, she had a baby girl. Her story continues with more ups and downs… she had to rely on the help of other people to raise her daughter so she could work. Lucky for her, she had those caring people in her life. This girl was able to get a good job with health insurance so she could take care of her...

...whose stories and plays celebrated optimism in the middle of trials and difficulties of the Great Depression. Many of Saroyan's stories were based on his childhood or dealt with the rootlessness of the immigrants’ life. Saroyan endeavored to create a prose style full of zest for life and seemingly impressionistic, that came to be called "Saroyanesque". His great humor and irony forced readers to maintain enthusiastic and positive mood even in the most difficult situations. His advice to a young writer was: "Try to learn to breathe deeply; really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell." W. Saroyan narrates about a human distress and loneliness in the world of bourgeois lifestyle, where a person is placed in the brutal conditions which don’t meet human fundamental needs and aspirations. The text under the study, “The Guilty Party”, is a short story, which is written not in a familiar way. The author rejects the traditional form of narrative. The plot in this case is not a simple sequence of events, but a well thought out composition. The author appears as a critic of social ills of his epoch, such as jealousy, misconduct, indifference, insincerity and so on. Nevertheless, the author represses his sympathies. There is an external narrator in the story. The story moves dexterously backwards and forwards in time, and the end of the story is...

...Living in a world where you feel like you are not seen or heard can be mind blowing and depressing. A young high school boy named Brandon in the short film, The Most Beautiful Thing by Cameron Covell, is a social outcast and has an isolated mindset. He feels as if he is never seen nor heard. Knowing that, he realizes that prom is just around the corner and he has to build up the courage to not only find a girl but also to ask her to go to prom with him. He has his eyes on one girl in particular and attempts to speak to her every time he sees her. The first time he speaks to her in the hallway she keeps walking. He later sees this girl outside sitting beside him and he speaks again. She did not respond. He persists and yells, “You can’t hear me?” She realizes he is trying to get her attention so she looks over at him. She writes him a note informing him that she is deaf and refuses to speak and that her name is Emily. They start writing notes, and then transition into hanging out, texting and even liking each other. Then he realizes he just might have a date for prom. First he has to figure out how he will ask her. But one day just might change everything for the worst. An unexpected obstacle occurs and he has to figure out a resolution. The acting of the main characters, the setting where the short film takes place, and the music that is playing in the background all has a positive impact on my thought of this film. The acting in this film was highly significant. Due...

...unchanged. The title of this book is symbolic, with nectar representing goodness and kindness, and the sieve representing the world. When you put nectar (goodness) in a sieve (the world) it will only last a short time before disappearing without a trace. In other words, enjoy what you have while it lasts, do not try to save what is in the moment. 2) Why might the author have chosen to have Ruku tell her story in flashback form? Is Ruku a reliable narrator? - The author might have chosen to have Ruku tell her story in flashback form because this way, Ruku can foreshadow and add thoughts about the events. When a story is told in flashback form, it is easier to focus on the main events and conflicts of the story rather than the minute details. Thoughts and feelings Ruku had after the events in the story occurred can be added in, which helps the reader to understand the plot. The story makes more sense being told after the fact, and makes you think about how things have changed since then. I believe Ruku is a reliable narrator. She was involved in all of the events in the story firsthand. 3) How does Ruku’s experience as a daughter, wife, and mother inform her relationship with her daughter Ira? - Ruku gained a lot of life experience through all of her trials. Her parents were supportive of her and she had a smooth marriage. Ira was Ruku’s first child and only daughter, so this gives them a special relationship. Ruku was unfortunately unable to bear a son with her husband...

...a True War Story How to Tell a True War Story is written by Tim O’Brien. It is set in Vietnam between the years of nineteen fifty-four and nineteen seventy-five. In this section, the story starts out by talking about a man named Rat Kiley. Kiley is writing a letter to a friend’s sister telling her how good of a man he really was. He also writes about different stories that happened and how he was the first to volunteer for things, just to emphasize the greatness of this man. The sister of the deceased man does not write back to Rat Kiley which greatly upsets him. The story goes on to identify the man as Curt Lemon. Eventually, it is clear how Lemon died. Kiley and Lemon were tossing a grenade back and forth to each other when suddenly Lemon ended up stepping into a booby trap. Another man in the military by the name of Mitchell Sanders tells O’brien a story to teach him lesson. The story is about two men who set out to the mountains on a mission. After a few days of living up there, the men hear strange noises. It gets worse and worse so they order that the land below them be attacked. They pack up their stuff and walk down the mountain. When they reach the bottom their commander asks them what they heard and the men reply with nothing. Sanders claims the moral of the story is that no one listens, you need to listen to the quiet. He goes on to say that the moral of a war story cannot be extracted without a deeper meaning surfacing. The meaning behind the story is if he really...
