Crisis Contingency Plan
Baderman Island Resort has contingency plans designed specifically to mitigate certain crisis situations in order to protect our employees, guests, facilities and all other assets. “An organizational crisis is a low-probability, high-impact event that threatens the viability of the organization and is characterized by ambiguity of cause, effect, and means of resolution, as well as by a belief that decisions must be made swiftly” (Breaux, D. & Premeaux, S., 2007)). The contingency plans outlined below are to be used in the event of a hurricane or an event of workplace violence. Employee assistance programs including counseling are available to any Baseman employee at any time.
Hurricane Contingency Plan Baderman Island Resort’s Hurricane Contingency Plan is a three stage plan contingent upon advanced warning. Given enough lead time the resort will be secured and all staff and guests evacuated from the island to safety, in the unfortunate event of no advanced notice and evacuation is impossible the plan will shift and all personnel will shelter in place; finally recovery which entails bringing operations up and close to normalcy as possible. Advanced warning - evacuation. In the event that The National Weather Center model predicts a 60% probability of a direct hit within 48 hours, stage one will commence. General Manager will assume role of incident commander and coordinate efforts of the response team to secure assets and property, ensure all contact information is exchanged and evacuation destination established and begin the evacuations. In the event that an advanced warning of 48 hours or more is unfeasible but enough not to warrant shelter in place, the incident commander and the response team will all work to evacuate all persons in the most expedious and efficient manner possible. No warning - shelter in place. In the unfortunate event that a hurricane advances at a rate that makes evacuation unfeasible, the incident commander will inform the authorities and necessary people at corporate headquarters so that rescue efforts can be launched immediately after storm passes, the response team will usher all personnel to approved storm shelters housed to sustain category 5 hurricanes and equipped to support survivors for 3 weeks if outside rescue is required. Recovery. Once storm has passed the damage assessment begins, if clean-up is minimal resort staff may be used in cleanup effort in order to maintain employment. In extreme cases where professionals are needed for recovery, every effort will be used to temporarily employ resort employees at other Boardman Management properties.
Workplace Violence Contingency Plan Workplace violence is a situation that every employer hopes never to have to contend with but if in the unfortunate event that it should happen, this plan should be the guidelines for response. Baderman believes that step one is prevention and that prevention is based in identification so to that end requires all employees attend the Dealing with Difficult Customers course offered by the Boardman Corporate University. Identification & reporting. Situations such as arguments, disagreements, shoving or screaming matches should be reported immediately to the General Manager. Situations implying serious harm or death, threats of violence or visual confirmation of a weapon of any kind should be reported to the emergency services / authorities first and then reported to the General Manager. Emergency action notification. Once notified the General Manager or a designated member of the staff will engage a mass communication through email and text messages alerting all staff and instructing to keep clear of area of concern. Employee recovery. Once situation has been rectified all directly affected employees will be required to attend post-traumatic stress therapy to ensure smooth adjustment back into the workplace to resume normal operation as soon as possible. Recommendations should be made to indirectly affected employees to attend sessions as well. Evaluate, train, verify. Once normal operations have been resumed evaluation of the situation will be conducted to analysis and improve in all areas from recognition to response. All employees will be directed through training and with knowledge and comprehension verified by skills demonstration and simulation testing.
