According to CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants), ABC is a medium to approach the costing and hence monitor the activities which involves two components: • Tracing resource consumption • Costing final outputs Resources are assigned and allocated to various activities, and further these activities are allocated to cost objects based on consumption estimates that are made through analysis and trend. Consequently, global financial activities are growing rapidly due to many factors, among which: - Growth of the investor portfolios, international hedge funds and bonds, private accounts and monetary source diversification; - Financial market liberalization and highly improved free flow of information; - Technological developments and advances in international communication across borders for easier and faster access in databases and markets; - Increased spending from and in the emerging countries. Like any other countries in the world banks play the most crucial role not in the economic but also the social, political environment in Bangladesh. Even it is wise to say that the financial sector of Bangladesh is solely dominated by the banking sector, because the non bank financial sector of Bangladesh is yet to develop to desired level, although it is growing very rapidly. The invention of banking based on Islamic shariah is a relatively new concept in the global banking arena. Now a day the Islamic Shariah based banks are not operating only in the Muslim countries but also in non Muslim countries with the same level of faith and efficiencies parallel to the conventional interest based banks. Even in some cases some of the Islamic Shariah based banks has exceeded their competing traditional banks in terms of service quality and some other key financial indicators. In Bangladesh Muslim constitutes more than 80% of her total population. These people possess strong faith on Allah and they want to lead their lives as per the instructions given in the holy Quran and Sunnah; the way shown by the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Sm). SHAHIMI Candidate of Islamic economics and assistant lecturer of Islamic economics, banking & finance, Email: shahida@pkrisc.cc.ukm.my, ABD. GHAFAR B. ISMAIL Professor of banking and finance, Email: agibab@pkrisc.cc.ukm.my and SANEP B. AHMAD Lecturer of Islamic economics and statistical economics, Email: nep@pkrisc.cc.ukm.my Islamic Economics and Finance Research Group School of Economics Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Malaysia ABSTRACT. In recent years, commercial banking worldwide has experienced a significant decline in its traditional business of accepting deposits and offering loans. Simultaneously, banks have become more involved in nontraditional activities that provide financial services and generate fee income. As a result, income from nontraditional activities has risen relative to income from traditional activities. This article presents an empirical investigation of Islamic banks’ involvement in various fee income activities. Our theoretical hypotheses relate the level of fee income activities at an individual bank to asset size, profitability, core deposits, capital risk as well as credit risk. These hypotheses are tested empirically using bank-specific information from a panel of Malaysian Islamic commercial banks for the years 1994 to 2004. The results imply that banks with higher levels of fee-generating activities tend to have higher assets and core deposits as well...
