...There is a saying "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder". What one individual considers beautiful may not be beautiful to another. To me, beauty is not only something that pleases the eyes, but also pleases the other senses and the mind. I think true beauty makes you see beyond the lovely sight. It will give you insight or realization of something interesting beyond just the outward appearance. When we talk about beauty in people, we often refer to their physical attractiveness. Of course, a beautiful or handsome face is pleasant to look at. But I find that the most memorable "beautiful people" are those who have captivating personalities behind the pretty faces. In one of my previous classes, there were two beautiful girls, Sue and Lin. Both had almost flawless faces and trim figures. But Lin was used to getting her way. She felt that her looks could help her get anything she wanted, especially among the boys. Sue, on the other hand, treated her beauty in a matter-of-fact way and she was nice to everyone. She was also a member of the debating team, her personality made her a more outstanding beauty than Lin. There is another kind of beauty in people that attracts me greatly. This is what is known as inner beauty. People who have this kind of beauty have attained inner peace. They care about their fellow-man, and try to right the injustices in this world. Two well-known personalities who exemplify this are Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa. Mandela was willing to sacrifice...

...S******* Engl 1201 – 17 Chapter Four Paper October 11, 2013 Beauty Lies Within The Eyes Of The Beholder The year is now 2010 and as we enter this new decade, we encounter so many new trends, fashion and styles. No matter what your budget might be, it seems like everyone has the same goal in mind. They want to be beautiful and look “beautiful.” Grace Suh’s essay, “Eye of the Beholder,” details her struggle as a Korean girl to conform to a Western ideal of beauty. After her makeover, Suh felt negated and also felt like a stranger was staring back at her when she looked at herself in the mirror. Finally, she realizes that she was content with the way she naturally looked, which causes her to leave the makeup behind her on the commuter train. To me, beauty is not only something that pleases the eyes, but also pleases the other senses and the mind. I think true beauty makes you see beyond the lovely sight. It will give you insight or realization of something interesting beyond just the outward appearance. Think about the word beautiful for a moment, when we talk about beauty in people, we often refer to their physical attractiveness. Of course, a beautiful or handsome face is pleasant to look at. But I find that the most memorable "beautiful people" are the ones who have captivating personalities behind the beautiful faces. In my high school graduating class, there were two girls whose beauty just stood out among the rest, Chelsea and Tressa. Both had almost...

...which becomes important in defining whether Authority is correct or authentic, so that people can follow the rules and regulation without any hesitation. Because of the use of Authority official Governmental policies, rules and regulations get accepted in the society. Authority has two main components: Power and Legitimacy. Legitimacy of a rule or a decision signifies the fact that people reckon the decision as fruitful and in welfare of the society. Thus they are always ready to follow the rule or decision. Demonstration of Power does not become necessary as long as Legitimacy is attached to Power. It only comes out as a symbol. Like a judge with his black gown or a policeman with his uniform. Just like beauty lies in the eyes of beholder, Legitimacy lies in the eyes of beholder. There is no question, that without Power it will be very difficult to implement the official decision as well as rules, but only by the fear of punishment or by the coercion authority may not prove successful as far as long term benefits are concerned. Infact such a step becomes tyranny and works as a catalyst for the rebellion. The able use of Power always gets support from legitimacy. Most of the society follows the rules on the basis of legitimacy therefore using Power does not become necessary all the time. No one will follow the rule or a regulation if the legitimacy of that rule is ruined irrespective of the Power of Authority. Authority = Power +...

...have no questions for them to research and experiment. According to Wolff, the Milesians who are considered philosophers were also scientist. Thales who is known as the first philosopher was an astronomer. By his knowledge of the stars he could predict the weather (Wolff, 14). “Following Thales were the Milesians Anaximander and Anaximenes, who expanded and developed speculative theories about the basic components of nature and their order…. They started Western civilization on its scientific journey (Wolff, 15). Lucretius a Roman philosopher and poet defended the Cosmological theory called atomism, in which everything in the universe is made up of little bits of matter called atoms which are so small they cannot be seen by the naked eye (another surprisingly modern doctrine) (Wolff, Chp.1 pt.). Science and...

...anthropology or economics). We must be aware of the fact that the humanities are academic subjects that study the human form using analytical, speculative, and critical methods. There are many types of humanities and we I will try to distinguish the differences between just a few of them. The first discipline that I shall attempt to explain is Art: There are different types of art. The visual art is one that you can see as in a painting or drawing. There are paintings of President Obama, what do you see, do you judge by the content or character, or even by how it feels. Do you see a black man; is he responsible for all of the socioeconomic problems today; or do you say technologically where do we go from here? It is all in the eye of the beholder. Some will look at this painting and dislike it simply because of his race. Then there will be those who look at it from a political point of view and hate it instantly. I wonder if people in general will ever be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin as Dr. Martin Luther King so wanted. Discipline number two is another form of art which is Music: Music makes the world go round a truer statement has never been made. We look at our young people today and say that the rap music has warped their minds or changed the way that they view things. Most of the music of today promotes violence and sex. This tells you that these are trying times and that technologically we have come a long way from the...

...A Matter of Beauty “Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the soul.” – Saint Augustine. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines beauty as “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the sense or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit”. However, what do we as society define beauty as? Doesn’t beauty depend on our own personal opinion? The media has convinced many people in society that beauty is only skin deep, but there is more to the matter. There are two main types of beauty, inner and outer beauty. In my opinion, inner beauty is more important than outer beauty because it is lasting instead of transient. Outer beauty is the easiest kind of beauty a person can notice. When meeting a person we don’t know for the first time, we often find ourselves intrigued at the sight of them. In this case, however, we are only analyzing his/her outer beauty. While physical beauty is alluring and possibly the drive behind why most people choose to interact with each other, many times someone considered “beautiful” can also have a malicious personality. A well known English classic, “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, gives a perfect example of why inner beauty is lasting and outer beauty is transient. The story is about a group of school boys stranded on an uninhabited island. They must create their own “adult free” society. The sophisticated novel reflects the nature of human beings through the boys’ makeshift...

..."It is not what you look at that matters, but what you see." Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Ever since we were old enough to comprehend the complexities of human conversations, a lot of things have been etched into our clay minds. One such universal phrase that is taught and imbibed more than anything else is the idea of ‘not judging a book by its cover’. Although they have merits, many idioms become obsolete until applied to everyday life. More often than not, our perspective on and of things is curtained by social stereotype and this, as a result, shapes and molds our outlook in life. For instance, whilst it’s raining, a person may look at the mud, the dirt, and the drenched car covers and condemn the notion of the heavenly downpour...

...Throughout the study of sociology, a reoccurring theme is that deviance seems to exist in the eye of the beholder, much like beauty. No act committed is automatically deviant, but must be defined as such. From as far back as medieval times to the present, it has always been the upper class dominating the lower class, those on the higher end of the social ladder that shapes the society people live in and define what deviant behaviour is and what is not. Those who have the power over such decisions can be classified as Moral Entrepreneurs, They strongly believe that their set of norms is the “right” way to live, their foundation is built on the belief that deviance lies within the individual, and therefore if you want to understand the deviance you must first seek out the problem within the individual and then treat them to get rid of deviance. Those who lack power and social standing are classified as the Cultural Paradigm and they have the complete opposite view of the Moral Entrepreneurs, they believe that the problem lies within society rather than in the individual therefore in order to deter deviance the problem that lies within society must be fixed. A clash of two titans in a one sided battle, however who is correct in terms of which manner is the better one to deter deviance. Should people be looking at the individual or at the society in which they live in? Through the eyes of great minds such as Becker, Kaplan, Denton and Parnaby it will become clearer that it is indeed...

...We’re forever being told that beauty is “only” skin deep. Well, for many black women and a few black men, that’s disturbingly deep. it looks like the politics of black beauty gets more complicated by the day. The era when skin-lightening was frowned upon as a self-hating practice is slipping away and many black people are being vocal about their desire to be lighter. Their arguements being that it's a personal choice, just like the one white people make when they darken their skin by sunbathing. So what’s the problem here? And why does this issue make people (of all races) so nervous? Skin whitening is the lightening of the skin by cosmetic means. This is achieved in multiple by using various products such as skin whitening cream. Some people will go to great lengths to have lighter skin, the same also applies to people who want to have darker skin. This is actually a touchy and controversial topic but it is about preference. Being Lighter in color is deemed by many cultures and societies as a representation of true beauty. Whether it is natural or chemical, safe or dangerous (and honestly, I don’t think those who use it care), why does skin-lightening in all its forms still have so many black women under its spell, willing to risk the health of the body’s biggest organ? What is behind the “colour complex”? In my opinion, variety is the spice of life, such as variety in food, clothes, hairstyles, etc and it also abounds in nature. That is why all people on Earth belong to...

...What Makes “The Great Gatsby” Great “Art is subjective” A Roman saying, “De gustibus non est disputandum” in translation means- it’s all a matter of taste. This indeed stands a proof that there is no constant in art. It all comes down to personal preferences. What one might find a masterpiece of a work might be absolute trash to some other. Art can never be confined within rigid boundaries of vision. Art lies above and beyond such fixities of an individual’s likes and dislikes. No piece of art can be called great. Likewise, no piece of art can be called worthless. If a work of art manages to play with the strings of just one heart, it has done its job already. After all, that’s what art is supposed to do, right? Transcend the inky sheets to...

Women all over the world are driven by media and advertisements to try to meet society’s meaning of beauty. ...Elaboration on construct: Chapter three breaks down attraction into three categories, physical, social attraction, and task attraction, I would like to focus on these three attractions throughout this construct, (McCrosky & McCain, 1974). Physical attraction is when somebody is drawn to one’s attire, hair, clothes, eyes and general appearance. Social attraction is when somebody is socially attracted to an individual based off of the social setting, however social attraction does not mean that somebody is physically attracted to them. The final attraction is task attraction, which means someone is desired to help achieve a goal, such as a career goal, financial goal, or group goal. An example of this would be a student wanting to partner with a fellow student who shows a broader knowledge of class material. Why this construct appeals to you (be specific): The big three (physical, social and task attraction) are something that I can relate to in my life and think of specific examples of when each has taken place and why....

...woman stares at me, her eyes never moving. The pose is frozen endlessly in time. She’s wearing a flowing silk gown and an expensive looking shall which one could imagine is made from gold flake. The bed she lies on has oversized pillows with frilly trim. Her shoes are gold and she appears to have some make-up on. The woman’s hair is dark as night, her eyebrows are long and pronounced and she has rosy cheeks. There seems to be an essence of wealth or, at the very least, the artist was trying to portray her as sophisticated and high class. Around her waist I see a red sash presumably also made of silk. One can imagine it is a ribbon around the gift that is the woman. Maja has a very seductive figure. The hourglass contours of her body, slender waist, and ample breasts rising as if she was inhaling deeply at the moment Goya started the outline. You can see there is strength in her legs and I would describe her as having “child-bearing hips”. Maja surely is a beautiful woman. But, is she a real woman? Was Francisco Goya painting the love of his life? The detail in the face suggests to me that Goya knew Maja well. Maja may be the mother of his children, yet she is still looks youthful and beautiful. If she isn’t his significant other than who is she? Perhaps she is just another paying customer. Francisco, the starving artist, could have been painting her at the commission of her wealthy family. The artist has done a great job of capturing her expression and beauty. How much must it have...
