Once they have an incorrect worldview, that can be used against them, in regards to manipulation. This article “Read-only participants: a case for student communication in online classes” (Nagel, Blignaut, Cronje 2007) analyzes data from several studies and suggests that active participation, as opposed to non-active participation, is directly correlated to student achievement. Read-Only Participants The term Read-only participants refers to online students who log into a specific classroom website, read the material provided or student post’s but do not get actively involved in the discussion. Buedouin (2002) suggested that read-only participants can learn and succeed in an online setting without participating (Nagel, Blinaught, & Cronje, 2007). However research by: Nagel, Blinaught, & Cronje (2007); Klemm (1998); Rovai & Barnum (2003); Swan, Shea, Frederickson, Pickett, & Pelz (2000), indicate that participation is essential to be a successful online student. ...progressed to know how to incorporate my evidence into my concise and focused thesis statement. For example in the self assessment essay my thesis was, “Due to transferring to many schools over my first two years of college, I feel like I have had the opportunity to build up many habits of mind from Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing, especially in flexibility, openness and persistence but still can develop in metacognition and creativity in order to become a more successful college writer.” This showed that I could adapt a thesis to the assignment and it was focused and used my sources. At this point in the semester, a strength I have is the ability to connect source evidence with my thesis. I am able to develop my focused thesis around source-based evidence. For example in the college learning essay I was able to use my interview with my friend who was an elementary teacher to help develop my thesis about how teaching has changed due to technology. I also think another strength I have is organizing my paper in a proper order. In the three essays in this portfolio I organized the essays with a focused thesis, introduction, body paragraphs and an organized conclusion. A challenge I have is using signal phrases to introduce my source-based evidence. I have worked on revising the essay on college learning to try and use...

Importance of Independent Learning

...These are vital skills for a student to comprehend independent learning. Knowing and understanding the value of ‘independent learning’ has been considered the core basis for a successful academic journey. In other words, ‘independent learning’ is the foundation for students becoming confident self-regulated life-long learners, Koper and Tattersall (2004). Although, ‘independent learning’ is not a new concept, Broad, (2006) believes that there seems to be a lack of agreement on what it actually means.   However, the intention of this paper, therefore is to analyse the meaning of ‘independent learning’ and the important influence it has on a student’s academic performance. This paper will also evaluate the impact of teaching modes on the learner’s education experience. Therefore in order to understand the importance of ‘independent learning’, one must look into its meaning to fully comprehend its value and benefits. Kesten,(1987) defines ‘independent learning’ as the “acquisition of knowledge free of external control by a self-motivated learner that willingly and appropriately identifies and uses resources available to make decisions to meet their own needs.” Hence, to become an independent learner, one must have the right frame of mind to learn and acquire the necessary skills that gear them towards becoming a self-directed learner. On the whole, ‘independent learning’ has been described by many as ‘self-regulated learning’ where the student takes control of their own learning...

Taking Steps to Becoming a Sucessful Person and Student

...Steps to Becoming a Successful Person and Student Gertrude Payton General Sciences 200 Instructor: Stephen Burgor September 16, 2014 The only individual who can determine my success or failure is me. Time management between my education and personal life will be a challenging responsibility as balance is needed. While taking advantage of every opportunity to use various tools and strategies available to help me gain knowledge and understanding in an effective way. I am taking steps to becoming a successful person and student through time management, hard work, determination, perseverance, along with accountability. Returning back to school has made me transition into a learning mode/mentality. The learning process is taking some adjustment as I have been out of school for many years. I know that I can succeed because I am motivated (Ellsworth, 1997). Some concepts and ideas are not always understood by me but I have found that I can begin to understand by reading, doing my assignments, and asking questions. Discouragement sometimes comes to me when things are not going exactly as I would like but I keep trying. This helps me to stay encouraged even in times when I want to quit or give up. I press ahead and stay positive. Although leadership may come calling without request, more often it comes to those who prepare for it by planning their careers (Andolsen, 2008). I decided to start planning my career by getting enrolled in school and research area of...

...Week 2: Project Deliverables NETW505: Essentials of Telecom Keller Graduate School of Management Submitted: July 2014 Research on Amazon’s Benefits from E-commerce and potential growth. On my paper, I will discuss a brief history of the company, its founders, and also how they began from scratch to now becoming one of the largest e-commerce companies in the world. Amazon.com, Inc. is one of the largest electronic commerce companies around the globe. With Seattle, Washington serving as its headquarters, the organization which started off as a bookstore offering for sale books to its global clientele has today diversified to offer a wide range of products and services including but not in any way limited to computer software, electronic goods, mobile devices, DVDs, toys, furniture and even food. Basically, the organization serves its clientele using its retail Web sites which are tailored to offer convenience and speed to shoppers. Furthermore, I will discuss some of the benefits of e-commerce laying emphasis to Amazon and how it helped in the growth of the company. According to Fazlollahi (2002), e-commerce can be taken to be “the use of technology mediated exchanges by business for the purpose of selling goods and services over the internet.” In the recent past, the growth of e-commerce has been rather fast with more businesses becoming motivated by a wide range of reasons to embrace the platform. This also happens to be the case for Amazon. By embracing e-commerce...
