...1Care Delivery: Delegation Introduction The topic I have chosen to discuss in this essay is delegation, as from my experience this is one of the most complex nursing skills to develop, this claim is supported by literature (Weydt: 2010) Delegation is a suitable topic to discuss as it is a necessity for any nurse to be able to delegate effectively, especially in recent times in which nurses are stretched to their limits due to an increase in patient numbers and current government NHS cuts. The NHS is supposed to be protected from the public sector cuts, but new research shows that more than 50,000 jobs are disappearing from the NHS (Ramesh: 2011) Delegation has particular relevance to me as a third year student because knowing when, how and to whom you can delegate requires a complex understanding of the task in hand, the process of delegation, and the skills and existing workloads of the people available. It is especially important to achieve the right balance as a third year student, as delegating too much may result in a loss of control, while failing to delegate or not delegating enough can lead to duties not being completed. I will begin by discussing areas of delegation such as responsibility, accountability and authority. I will then move on to discuss aspects and principles of best practice. I will then continue to focus on managerial and organisational aspects relating to delegation, I will discuss these aspects using examples from practice. Delegation may be difficult...

...Introduction Time is one of the most valuable resources for everyone. It should be managed properly by the managers of any organizations in order to run the organizations smoothly. And, Delegation is a process of assigning task by one person to the other. The purpose of this essay is to discuss how managers cannot function effectively without good Time Management and Delegation skills. It then discusses the benefits of time management and delegation, drawbacks of delegations and measures to improve time management and delegation skills. Time Management Managing time is very vital as time is very essential to everyone. Therefore, it should be used properly as it cannot be restored. It is a skill that anyone can develop if remain focused and committed. The main purpose of time management is simply to manage the time in order to complete the task in certain periods of time. Managing the time helps us to focus more on our tasks and complete it on required time. In order to be effective, managers need to understand the value of time and utilize it properly. They should be able to know what is most important to them and then plan according to the importance of the tasks. Drucker P.F stated, “Everything requires time. It is the one truly universal condition. All work takes place in time and uses up time (Pg. no. 22)”. In addition, time is a limited resource. It is something that passes quickly and therefore, we should make most of it by not wasting it on irrelevant things....

A Research Paper April 11, 2013 Fiona Molloy Dr. McDonnell HAS 420 April 11, 2013 Fiona Molloy Dr. McDonnell HAS 420 Fiona Molloy Dr. McDonnell/Bill Miller HSA 420 Does Delegation Help or Hurt Nursing? Chapter One: The History of Nursing. The first nursing school was established in India in about 250 B.C., and only men were permitted to attend because men were viewed to be more pure than women. If you think of a woman dressed in scrubs with a stethoscope around her neck and a clipboard in her hands, you aren’t alone. An overwhelming majority of nurses in the United States today are women. However, nursing began as a practice reserved for men. It wasn’t until the 1800's that nursing became an organized practice. During the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale and 38 volunteer nurses were sent to the main British camp in Turkey. Nightingale and her staff immediately began to clean the hospital and equipment and reorganized patient care. Nightingale pushed for reform of hospital sanitation methods and invented methods of graphing statistical data. When she returned to Britain, Nightingale aided in the establishment of the Royal Commission on the Health of the Army. As a woman, Nightingale could not be appointed to the Royal Commission, but she composed the Commission’s report. (Travel Nurses of America, 2010) Completed, the report was over 1,000 pages in length and included detailed...

...and Application Charmaine Perkins Houston Campus January 12, 2006 Delegation Paper In today’s world there are many companies that strive and become very successful and profitable. In order for any business to establish themselves and have a great tenure they must adhere to not only factors but also delegation. Today, more than ever, managers must learn to use their time effectively. As a manager, you have a multitude of responsibilities. A situation made more difficult by an environment that emphasizes change, rapid responses times, and thinking “outside of the box.” There never seems to be enough time to get it all done. If, however, you are going to have an impact, you must take control of your time and not vice versa. If you try to do it all yourself, this will never happen. You can control your time by arriving earlier, using detailed planners and schedules, or “blocking off time” to focus on special projects. You might also try prioritizing tasks or using an elaborate filing system. All of these approaches will help, but you will never maximize your effectiveness unless you learn to delegate effectively. Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, says that “effectively delegating to others is perhaps the single most powerful high-leverage activity there is.” Certainly in today’s business environment, effective delegation will help you achieve your fullest potential (as well help develop those people around...

...AC 1.1 Evaluate the benefits of delegation. According to Murdock and Scutt (2001) the definition of management is getting work done through people. The ability to manage efficiently and effectively is therefore dependent one’s ability to delegate. The success of any individual occupying a managerial position is measured not by what the individual is able to produce but by what his/her team produces. This can be effected through delegation. There are many benefits to delegation for the delegator/manager, the delegate/employee and the organisation. As a manager/leader it is important to take time to think about goals, not just activities. If it is done effectively delegating can relieve some of your stress and give you more time to do your job. Delegating can help enhance your credibility as a manager/leader. By allowing your employees new ways to show their responsibility, you get their respect and loyalty. It will also help to identify potential within your team. According to Murdock and Scutt (2001) a manager should delegate the following: * Routine tasks * Interesting tasks * Tasks that others could possibly do better * Tasks that others might enjoy * Tasks that are good for an individual’s development * Time consuming tasks * Tasks for which you are not ultimately responsible. Managers who delegate effectively also receive several personal benefits; most importantly, they have more time to do their own jobs when they assign tasks to others...

...problem of the centralization or decentralization of decision rights concerns the locus of the authority to make decisions affecting the organization. (Colombo & Delmastro, 2008) The question of the determinants of the allocation of decision rights in firms has received considerable attention from different streams of economists and strategy scholars over the last couple of decades. The information processing stream ( see Radner & Marschak, 1972; Harris & Raviv, 2002; Sah & Stiglitz, 1986) contends that hierarchical organizations that centralize the decision-making function can suffer from organizational failures, consisting in leaks that arise in transmitting information from the top to the bottom of the hierarchy and vice versa. Benefits of delegation than arise because of inefficiencies in intra-firm communication (Keren, Levhari, & Kerent, 1979) implementation delays (Radner, 1993), fully exploitation of economies arising from local capabilities and specialization tasks (Bolton & Dewatripont, 1994) and high opportunity costs of highrank managers (Harris & Raviv, 2002). Conversely to the information processing stream, which emphasizes the costs of information processing and transmission, the decentralization of incentives stream (Aghion & Tirole, 1997; Dessein, 2002; Rajan & Zingales, 1998) focuses attention on the incentive costs that arise with decentralized decision-making (Colombo & Delmastro, 2008). Aghion and Tirole (1997)...

...In the USA, the first formal study of empowerment dates back to Mary Parker Follett‟s management ideas. She distinguished between “power-with” and “power-over” and suggested the process of integration to increase power-with while decreasing power-over (Business and Management Review, 2011). And power-with means get the job done by providing the delegation of authority. Delegation is the work a manager does to entrust responsibility and authority to others and to create new accountability for results (Fletcher and Taplin, 2002). Effective delegation can lessen the authority of managers but cannot lessen the responsibility. And it can help managers to work more effectively and efficiently. The process of providing decision-making authority to non managers is called delegation. For the process to be successful, an employee must be able to obtain the resources and support needed for effective accomplishment of the delegated task. When managers share power with non managers empowerment occurs. Empowering employees enables organizations to be more flexible and responsive and can lead to improvements in both individual and organizational performance. Similarly, it is maintained that employee empowerment is critical to organizational innovativeness and effectiveness. This includes providing the training, tools and management support that employees need to finish a task. Thus, an equipped worker has both the authority and the capability to accomplish the work. Although authority can be...

...opportunities elsewhere in the organization or outside HP. II. OBJECTIVE The objective of this case study was to be able to understand the importance of delegation of tasks to employees in an organization. III. AREAS OF CONSIDERATION The three most important areas of consideration for this case are the following: 1. The Global Management Program itself. 2. The delegation of tasks to Hewlett-Packard’s employees. 3. The benefits of GAM to Hewlett-Packard’s customers. IV. ALTERNATIVE COURSES OF ACTION The following are the alternative courses of actions for this case study: 1. To continue the Global Account Management Program and maintain the existing policies. 2. To discontinue the GAM program and formulate other strategy since it creates conflict between the global account managers and country managers. 3. To continue the GAM program and have further analysis or re-evaluation on the proper delegation of tasks to Hewlett-Packard’s employees. V. CONCLUSION To be able to deliver good service to customers to any part of the world, a global account management program must be established in an organization with a worldwide service like in the case of the Hewlett-Packard. I therefore conclude that Hewlett-Packard was right in formulating a GAM program for the benefit of its customers. The GAM...

...AUTHORITY, DELEGATION AND DECENTRALISATION What is an authority? Authority is the cement of organisation structure in which various units of organisation are integrated. Without authority a manager cesses to be a manager. It is the authority that gives managers power to act. Authority is glue that holds organisation together. It is impossible to have an organisation unless some persons have the authority to command action of others. The word Authority is derived from the Latin word “auctoritas” meaning invention, advice, opinion, influence, or command. In English, the word 'authority' connotes power given by the state or by academic knowledge of an area (someone can be an authority on a subject) Weber defined domination (authority) as the chance of commands being obeyed by a specifiable group of people. Legitimate authority is that which is recognized as legitimate and justified by both the ruler and the ruled. Authority sometimes refers to;- 1) The Institutionalized and legal power inherent in a particular job, function, or position that is meant to enable its holder to successfully carry out his or her responsibilities. 2) An agency or body created by a government to perform a specific function, such as environment management, power generation, or tax collection is an authority. 3) Judgment of a court or judicial opinion quoted in support of a legal argument. In management field, the concept authority can be defined as:- 1. The right to guide and direct the actions...
