Why School Should Start Later

...get ready to drive to school. Teens amble and climb in their car to rush to get to school, so that they aren’t late. Adults make their way to work when a sleepy teen swerve into the other lane and hits another car head on. There was a loud crunching noise as the two cars collide, glass flies everywhere while airbags deploy. All of this could have been avoided if teens could get more sleep. Even though the accident was slightly dramatic, it is only one of the side effects of sleep deprivation that can be caused by schools starting too early. Since a lot of accidents have been caused by teens that haven’t gotten the proper amount of sleep, the school start time should be no earlier than 8:30am. In the event that teens are more prone to accidents due to lack of sleep, it’s dangerous to even think about letting them drive to school early in the morning. “Teen drivers are at the highest risk for drowsy driving; however, and preliminary studies have shown that delaying their school start time has a significant effect in lowering the occurrence of such crashes.” (Eight major obstacles to later school start...

Although it is not a requirement; most, if not all, teenagers will experience at least one year of high school. With the experience of high school, students will also go through waking up early sometimes at five or six a.m. The starting time of high schools has been highly debated for several years. Medical research found that teenagers have biologically different sleep and wake patterns. It will improve attendance and enrollment rates, reduce sleeping in class, and less student-reported depression (“Sage Journals”). One of the most common side effects of lack of sleep is hallucinations (“Independent”). Why High School Should Start Later Essay

...Should high school schedules begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m .? People under the age of 16 need at least 10 hours of sleep to function. It also has been scientifically proven that everyone doesn't properly function until 9 o'clock. So getting up at 6 isn't helping anybody, and it just makes students tired, thererfore and they don't concentrate as well. It is not fair on students who are tired. They cannot go to bed earlier because they get about 3-4 hours of homework a day. I think this because 90% of students that wake up at 6a .m or 7a.m are not fully rested, and if you are tired in at school then your brain can not function properly . Doctors say that starting school earlier in the morning prevents children and teenagers from getting a full night’s sleep, which can affect their health, safety and academic performance. Students need enough time to rest since their school day is about 7 hours. Every student sleeps different; most need at least 9-10 hours a night. Let’s say if a student sleeps at 11pm, which most of the students do, he/ or she will wake up at around 5:30 - 6:00, which is not an enough amount of time to sleep for a teen. …...

Later School Start Later Essay

...Sleeping, like eating, breathing, and staying hydrated, is a crucial element of human life, though it isn’t always treated as such. Getting a good night’s rest is especially necessary during the teenage years, as many hormones that stimulate growth and development are released only while the body is dormant (Pietrangelo). Teenagers require, on average, 9 and ¼ hours of sleep each day (Later School Start Times). At the same time, their natural circadian rhythms trigger sleepiness later at night (Later School Start Times). Thus, while many teenagers are unable to fall asleep before, or even at, 11 PM, they are still forced out of bed at the crack of dawn and expected to be alert and ready to learn within an hour of doing so (Later School Start Times). This pattern creates a harmful sleep deficit, wreaking havoc...
