...A Line in the Sand - The Alamo in Blood and Memory is a historical book by noted historians Randy Roberts and James Olson. It serializes a comprehensive account of the Alamo, a battle between Mexican forces led by General Antonio López in the predawn moments of March 6, 1836. All the people behind the walls of the Alamo lay dead, including Travis, Bowie, and Crockett. The trio has since been immortalized in Texas as heroes of freedom who stood for political and nationalistic values in the wake of Mexican incursion. Alongside their heroism are a overabundance of myths that surround both the Mexicans who put them to death and the real motive of their sacrifice. The book presents a rarefied, evidenced view of the battle to fill the current void whereby the interpretation of Alamo has been left, to quote the authors, “to Walt Disney and John Wayne”. ...Having heard the news of the successful test at Los Alamos, President Truman formally grasped the reality that the United States now possessed the most powerful weapon in the world. The denotation of the atomic bomb exceeded beyond what was expected. After receiving the news, President Truman remarked, “ This is the greatest thing in history.” The only thing left to do with the atomic bomb now was to use it. President Truman understood that the bomb was going to be very damaging to the Japanese population, yet his focus was more towards saving American and Japanese lives. He predicted that an attack on Japan would result in more Japanese and American casualties than the atomic bomb would. Stressing over the decision of using the atomic bomb on Japan was not an option for President Truman because he firmly believed that the bomb would prevent the U.S. from having to invade Japan...

...When his orders mandated that he remain behind in Los Alamos, the chagrined naval officer requested an explanation. His superior enlightened him with the justification that incase the explosion exceeded estimates and obliterated all those present, a cadre of scientists and engineers needed to remain safe from harm to carry on the research. Still miffed, the brash officer, thought that he at least should inspect the strictly off limits test site. Shortly before the scheduled explosion, Marvin and his girl friend, with exuberant defiance, clandestinely slipped into the site to scrutinize the layout and inaugurate it in an intimate manner. The dropping of the atomic bombs, the first on Hiroshima, followed by a second on Nagasaki, brought the war to a rapid conclusion. Marvin, along with numerous colleagues, continued to work at the research center in Los Alamos. However, with the cessation of hostilities came a relaxation of the frantic work pace maintained during the war. In the prime of their lives and with time for leisure activity, Marvin and other men from the research center engaged in frequent mountain climbing expeditions to the Colorado Rockies. This initiated Marvin’s lifelong passion...

...If we would be forced to abandon the farm, there would be a place to go that has weapons, ammo, gas, food, clothing, shelter and medicine. Preferably within a two day walk. if we got separated, everyone would know where to meet up." "Those people at the Alamo house didn't have rally point?" "Even worse, there was no exit strategy. We have a back door." "So we leave stuff and hope nobody comes along and takes it" Joker asked sarcastically? "A second rally point. The odds are against both being looted. When was the last time we saw strangers anyway?" Both men enjoyed the drive through the rolling hills, especially after being cooped up on the farm. Trey made a left turn figuring it would come out near the cattle farm. "We should be looking for someplace Ann and Nick could live. Maybe Derby and his group also. I wonder if they know anything about cattle?" Several homes they passed had been left with haste. Piles of belongings had been left in the yard when they wouldn't fit in whatever...

...For the last fifty years computers have grown faster, smaller, and more powerful, transforming and benefiting our society in ways too much to count. But like any exponential explosion of resources, this growth known as Moore's law must soon come to an end. Research has already begun on what comes after our current computing revolution. This research has discovered the possibility for an entirely new type of computer, one that operates according to the laws of quantum physics, a quantum computer. A quantum computer would not just be a traditional computer built out of different parts, but a machine that would exploit the laws of quantum physics to perform certain information processing tasks in a better and more efficient manner. One demonstration of this potential is that quantum computers would break the codes that protect our modern computing infrastructure the security of every Internet transaction would be broken if a quantum computer were to be built. This potential has made quantum computing a national security concern. Yet at the same time, quantum computers will also revolutionize large parts of science in a more benevolent way. Simulating large quantum systems, something a quantum computer can easily do, is not practically possible on a traditional computer. A technology of quantum computers is also very different. For operation, quantum computer uses quantum bits (qubits). Qubit has a quaternary nature. Quantum mechanic’s laws are completely different from the laws...

...Controversy over Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) shipments Axia College of University of Phoenix COM 125 Utilizing Information in College Writing Tasha Tillman September 17, 2006 Controversy over Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) shipments When someone says the word nuclear or radioactive most people panic and are scared to death. Would one be safer transporting a trailer loaded with 9,000 gallons of gasoline or would the same person be safer transporting a loaded trailer of transuranic (TRU) waste? Therefore, transporting any commodity can be as safe as the driver transporting the commodity or the opposing traffic makes the situation. With the continued controversy over the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site, the Department of Energy (DOE) has continued to transport transuranic (TRU) waste from different sites around the U.S. to the world’s first repository for radioactive waste. This paper will explain what the WIPP site does and where WIPP is located. Will explain the birth of the program and why. Will explain what TRU waste is. Will explain what the process of disposal is from birth to the grave. Will show what the public has to say about the program. Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the world's first underground repository licensed to safely and permanently dispose of TRU waste left from the research and production of nuclear weapons. After more than 20 years of scientific study, public input, and regulatory struggles, WIPP began operations...

...Lone Star Nation Book Written By: H.W. Brands Published By: Anchor Books Published in: New York in February 2005 Book Review Written By: Meg Murphy H.W. Brands is very good at bringing to life all the famous characters and events that walk through the founding of Texas. Despite years of tall tales, movies and others taking liberties with the facts, on its own the story is a good one. This book is not just about the history of Texas, but details the accounts of the individuals' lives and struggles during the colonization and fight for the independence of Texas. H. W. Brands brings to the reader vivid portrayals of such great men as Andrew Jackson, Stephen F. Austin, and Sam Houston along with a host of lesser known individuals whose pioneering spirits brought them to the Texas borders only to face opposition from Spaniards, marauding and hostile Indian attacks, and ultimately an army of power-hungry Mexican leaders, fearful of the growing numbers of American settlers. He begins by painting a picture of Moses Austin, a failed businessman who, like many others, was driven to this remote border province of Mexico. Austin and his brother successfully operated a lead mine in Virginia, borrowing heavily to finance the venture. A bank downturn left him holding worthless bank notes, starting his push to the Western borders to do business. He ends up over five hundred miles from the United States border at San Antonio de Béxar, the capital of Texas. He negotiates with a hostile Spanish...

...Red Feather Journal 73 “Be Sure You're Right, Then Go Ahead”: The Davy Crockett Gun Craze by Sarah Nilsen In April 2005, sixty thousand members of the National Rifle Association gathered in Houston, Texas for their 134th Annual Meeting. The keynote speaker for the event was embattled U.S. House Majority Leader, Representative Tom De Lay. After his speech, De Lay was joined on stage by Lee Hamel dressed as Davy Crockett in full buckskin attire and a coonskin hat. Hamel presented De Lay with a handcrafted flintlock rifle that he had made for the event with his mentor, Cecil Brooks. The presentation of the reproduction rifle to De Lay is part of a long NRA tradition that began in 1955 when Walt Disney‟s Davy Crockett series first appeared on television. When Charlton Heston received his handcrafted flintlock rifle in 1989, he uttered his famous words, “From my cold dead hands.” President Ronald Reagan and Vice President Dick Cheney also joined the list of those who received facsimile Davy Crockett flintlock rifles from a man dressed in Crockett buckskin attire. This tradition is part of the NRA‟s efforts to represent the gun as a key instrument in the founding of the United States. It secured this ideological representation in part by appropriating the mythology of early American heroes like Davy Crockett. Davy Crockett became emblematic of the gun mythology of early American life. This mythology was synergized by the NRA and popularized through children‟s television...

...ORIGINAL REPORTS: CANCER INTEREST, AWARENESS, AND PERCEPTIONS OF GENETIC TESTING AMONG HISPANIC FAMILY MEMBERS OF BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS Objective: To provide a preliminary description of the interest, awareness, and perceptions of genetic testing among Hispanics with a family history of breast cancer Design: This cross-sectional pilot study used interpersonal structured interviews for data collection. Participants: We interviewed 48 Hispanics without breast cancer but who had a family member with breast cancer; participants lived in San Antonio and the surrounding area. Main Outcome: The outcomes were interest in breast cancer genetic testing, awareness about genetic testing, perceived risk of carrying a breast cancer susceptibility gene, and the perceived benefits and risks associated with a genetic test. Measures: Items previously used in research regarding interest and perceived genetic risk and a previously validated benefits and riskslimitations scale for genetic testing commonly used by other researchers were used to measure the outcomes. Results: Awareness of genetic testing for breast cancer susceptibility was very low, yet most (82%) participants were interested in a genetic test for breast cancer susceptibility. Participants were more likely to identify with the benefits than the potential risks of genetic testing. The most highly endorsed benefits were to know to take better care of one’s self and to undergo more frequent screening. Conclusions: Hispanics seem to...
