...Bible Dictionary Project Template Name: Brittani Fink Student ID: L25540669 Course: Bibl 104 Date: September 22, 2014 Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Ruth is one of the most well known women of the Bible. She began her life in Moab, and eventually she moved to Israel. Ruth lived approximately 1000 B.C. No information is known about Ruth’s birth. Ruth is best known as one of the most godly women in the Bible. God reinforced her decision to leave her own country and she is one of the most prominent women in Jesus’ geneology. Ruth was known best for her loyalty, love, obedience and diligence. Ruth was a wife to Boaz and mother to Obed. Ruth put her trust in God and left her family and a land she knew to marry her first husband. After her husband died instead of fleaing back to her homeland she satyed with her mother-in-law then traveled together to Judah. Tursting in God again, Ruth found herself to fend for herself and to begin work in the fields, which is how she met Boaz. By being faithful and trusting God she was blessed with a son and grandson. Through Ruth’s life we can see that she is an example that God will reward our faithfulness. After she made the sacrifice to leave her family then lost her husband she remained faithful and trusted in God and God rewarded her. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28). The book of Matthew, although not physically...

...A narrative by definition is the representation of an event or story as per Merriam-Websters dictionary(2013). The Bible by definition would then also be considered a book written in a narrative form. The Bible gives us a written picture of both the past and present day. It gives us multiple narrative stories depictive good and evil while guiding its reader down the straight and narrow path. The stories are based on personal encounters as well as fictional ones, which are seen at times as parables, essentially a story inside a story. One major downfall that I have seen is when people begin to read into some of these stories they begin to read too far into them or take away things that are not meant to be taught in the scripture. Others when reading stories begin to pick out pieces that they see as something that should not have happened or they feel does not belong when in actuality narrative stories are written as they happen in true fashion and not the way things should have happened. People say that if the bible is a true and perfect as it is said to be why would they put individuals throughout the book who are far from perfect and who make decisions that are depicted throughout the book that are also far from perfect. The narrative written stories throughout the bible are just one facet for things to be portrayed through. Not all issues are dealt with in this way and therefore not all areas are taught though...

...Life’s paths are guided by a set of rules call Ethics. Ethics are principles that set forth parameters for us to determine what is right or wrong. These parameters define practices that should be performed in our personal and business lives. The Programming Code of Ethics and God’s Ten Commandments are different in nature but possess some similarities. The Programming Code of Ethics speaks against dishonesty. It states that “...never reuse copyrighted code unless the proper license is purchased or permission is obtained” (Programming Code of Ethics). Use of unauthorized copyrighted code is known as copyright infringement. Copyright infringement as defined by copyright holders is theft (Wikipedia.org). God commands us not to steal (Exodus 20:15 KJV). It is immoral to be dishonest. In the Ten Commandments God tell us “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain” (Exodus 20:7 KJV). This verse tells us we are to be reverence to God and not defame his name. The Programming Code of Ethics has such similarity when it states “…never defame the profession” (Programming Code of Ethics). As professionals we should be loyal and respect the profession. The Programming Code of Ethics also talks about truthfulness. It states “…never maliciously injure the reputation of an employer or members of the development team” (Programming Code of Ethics). God commands that “Thou shalt not bear false...

...BIBL 104-D81 March 31, 2014 Forum 1 (Modules 2 and 3): Historical-Cultural Context 1. Historical-Cultural Context - According to Duvall & Hays, in Journey Into God’s Word; the first step in understanding the bible, or any historical text for that matter, is understanding the text as it relates to the original author and his or her specific audiences. If a reader doesn’t have a good grasp of the circumstances surrounding the introduction of the text at the time of authorship, how can he or she begin to understand the author’s original intent? Was the author relating a story to elicit particular feelings or emotions, laying down edicts to be followed without waiver, or just providing a narrative description of actual events? Furthermore, historical and cultural context give us a framework for looking at a passage or literary piece, and applying the information based upon the changes in the current conditions as they exist today. Duvall & Hays use the New Testament passage referencing the difficulty of a rich man entering the kingdom of heaven as a perfect example of the miss-application of historical context. For years children have been taught of a gate in the walls of Jerusalem called the ‘Eye of the Needle’ that was so narrow camels had to thread their way through very carefully. Unfortunately, there is no record of any such gate actually existing; therefore, even though the imagery is poignant, interpreting the meaning of the passage using this false historical...

...The prophets are difficult to interpret mainly due to misunderstandings about their function and form (Fee/Stuart p182). Most dictionaries define the word “prophecy”as ‘foretelling or prediction of what is to come. Using the prophets in this way is highly discerning, for less than 2% of OT prophecy is messianic; less than 5% describes the new covenant age and less than 1% concerns future events (Fee/Stuart p182). The prophets usually announced the immediate future of Judah, Israel and the surrounding nations, rather than our future. Those events were forthcoming for them but past for us (Fee/Stuart p182). The primary function of prophets as a spokesperson was to speak for God to their own contemporaries. Of the hundreds of prophets in Israel, we have the writings of only 16. We know a lot about what Elijah and Elisha did, but relatively little of what they said (Fee/Stuart p183). The difficulty of historical distance also complicates our comprehension of the prophets (Fee/Stuart p 183). Four things must be emphasized about the Function of Prophecy: “The prophets were covenant enforcement mediators”. God gave His law and enforces it: positive enforcement takes the form of blessing, negative enforcement that of curse. God announced the enforcement through the prophets so that the ensuing positive or negative events would be understood by the people. The prophets didn’t create the blessings or curses they announced. They may have worded them in narrative ways, but always on the...

Name one issue (one chapter), with which you had consider considerable disagreement. Then, in 3-5 sentences tell me why you had considerable disagreement with this chapter. A. One thing I was unclear on is why is there a need for feminist interpretation? This chapter seems to do the opposite of the bible. It encourages disunity through gender. 2) The Cambridge Companion to Biblical Interpretation covers a number of different issues related to biblical interpretation. Name one issue (one chapter), with which you had consider considerable agreement. Then, in 3-5 sentences tell me why you had considerable agreement with this chapter. A. The one issue I would agree with is that the Bible bear witness to divine revelation. No matter how the modern religions attempts to change the contents, the foundation will remain that Christian theology is in fact based on the revelation of God in Jesus Christ. 3) In Eat this Book, Peterson talks about “Oxyrhynchus.” Tell me what this word means, as it relates to biblical interpretation. A. It is something to do with Papyri. Seriously Dr. Estes, the one percent I do not pay close attention is what you focus...

...Bible 104 11APR13 Summary of the books of the Old Testament Books Leviticus Leviticus is a genre of law in the Old Testament. Adam and Eve were the first sinners of God’s creation because of that no man is Holy. So Moses gathers the Israelites and they are at the foot of Mount Sinai and God lets them know what he expects of his holy people. God gives them an assortment of worship rituals and laws that will set the Israelites apart from any other nation or religion. Sin leads to death so to purify oneself or a nation offerings were presented to God. These offerings took form of burnt in which an animal is sacrificed, grain in which we thank God for all he has produced, peace offering when a person burns a piece of the animal and shares, and a sin and guilt offering to purify an individual who has committed a specific sin. When Aaron and his sons go through a week long process of rituals and Moses sprinkling them with oil they become the Levitical Priesthood. Moses also gives instructions for holy day to day living. Holy living included everything from not eating certain birds to disposing of dead bodies properly. With all the rituals and rules that God it shows the Israelites devotion and dedication to the lord. Joshua The book of Joshua is a narrative story. The main purpose of the book is to show the power and faithfulness of God if you listen and obey. As God called to Moses he called to Joshua. Joshua takes over the Israelites and marches towards the “promise...

...Valerie BIBL 104 Summary of the books of the Old Testament Deuteronomy The genre of Deuteronomy is law. Moses spends the book redirecting and retelling the people of Israel about what God has done for them. He completes this through the process of multiple speeches. First he reminds the people of the sins that had been commited which resulted in the years spent wandering the dessert, the land being divided and the wars that were fought. Then he reminds the people by recounting the Ten Commandments of God’s law and also the dire need to accept the law in order to guide both ethical and moral practices. The people of Israel are to remember that they are to treat eachother, property and God with respect and reverence. Next he explains the process of blessings and curses and the desperate need to remember what God offers for obedience in contrast to direct defiance and disobedience. Moses presents Joshua as the new leader and explains to the people the need to follow him as he was chosen by God. Then Moses teaches the people the song of Moses and the book concludes with his death. This book is dedicated to delivering the law back to the people. Retelling and relearning to avoid any possibility of returning to the errors of their fathers. Joshua The genre of the book of Joshua is narrative. It tells the story of Joshua, a chosen by God spiritual leader, being strong in faith and superior in fighting he leads his people across the river Jericho and completes...

...Jenna Erickson BIBL 104-D13 05/8/2015 New Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Romans/Paul/Ephesus Romans: This Epistle to the Romans, although usually shortened to just Romans, was written by the Apostle Paul around the times of 55 to 57 A.D. This is the 6th book of New Testament and out of all the letters or epistles that Paul wrote in his time, his letter to the Romans is the longest, most detailed and most ambitious. The two major personalities in this book are: the writer, the Apostle Paul, and Phoebe who delivered the letter to the Roman Christian Church. Paul addressed such things in this letter as; the meaning of the gospel, the importance of the gospel, the nature of Gods salvation, how salvation can be achieved by all whom seek it, the people who are in need of it, the effects of salvation on an individual’s life, and the impact of salvation on the community as a whole. “For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you — that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine” (Romans 1:11-12). The most important and probably the central theme seen throughout this book is the faith in God’s righteousness and Christ’s sacrifice, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes... For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith" (Romans 1:16-17). Paul: Paul was personally responsible for writing quite...

...Jenna Erickson BIBL 104-D13 04/17/2015 Old Testament Bible Dictionary Project: Exodus/Moses/Sinai Exodus: Exodus is the second book of five in the Pentateuch or Torah of the Old Testament. It is also the second book in the Hebrew Bible, and is known as V’elleh Shemoth, while in the Greek Bible it is known as Exodus, meaning “departure” or “outgoing”. Moses is believed to be the author of Exodus, and it was most likely written during the forty years of wandering in the wilderness, between 1451 and 1491 BC. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven” (Exodus 17:14). The main themes of Exodus is God’s covenant with the Hebrew nation, and Moses leading the departure of the Israelites out of Egypt. “And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel—and God knew” (Exodus 2:24-25). A brief summary of Exodus would include the beginning chapters about; the enslaved Israelites, the birth, education and first leaving of Moses, the 10 plagues set about by God, the first Passover, the Israelites departure (Exodus) from Egypt along with the parting of the Red Sea, and the destruction of the Egypt Army. The middle of the book includes; the journey to Mt. Sinai from the Red Sea, the making of the covenant at Sinai and the writing of the Ten Commandments. And the Lord said to Moses...

...Summary of the books of the Old Testament Exodus The book of Exodus is of the narrative genre initially and then switches to law. This book covers the development of Israel into a real nation, and falls into seven distinct sections. First there is the birth and education of Moses who was born an Israelite, but raised as an Egyptian. During the suffering of Israel, God used a burning bush to show Moses that he was the one to deliver the Israelites out of bondage. Second was Moses confronting the Pharaoh with the ten plagues, which included the observance of the first Passover. Next we read of the parting of the Red Sea and narrative of the journey of Moses guiding the people to Sinai. The fourth section covers the delivery of the Ten Commandments or laws by God on Mt. Sinai. Then we have the section on the building of the tabernacle. The six section covers the renewing of the covenant with God after the sinful actions of the Israelites in worshiping the golden calf. The last section covers the building and dedication of the Tabernacle. Deuteronomy This book’s genre is law, which is actually taken from the Greek word for “the second law.” Before being delivered to the promised land of the Canaan, Moses spoke to the people with forceful presentations of the essential parts of God’s revelation including emphasis on the spiritual principles of the law and its fulfillment. He also sought to teach application of the law to circumstances the Israelites would face in their new...

...Biblical Worldview Introduction Christian psychology and Christian counseling may appear contradictory at first. They take into account various perspectives of counseling to include biblical principles and modern psychology or the so-called secular psychology. Humanistic psychology believers have stated that mankind is the highest standard of all morality and truth. They, therefore, reject faith, the bible, and the supernatural. Christian psychology is man’s way of understanding and repairing their spiritual side synonymously with their real world issue. If we stayed true to the real meaning of psychology, for example in Greek, the word psyche means the study of man’s soul. It is only Christianity that has a clear insight of the spiritual realm. Example one The term healing means bringing the person into a proper relationship with the mental, spiritual and physical laws of God. Humans are formed in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), and must, therefore, recognize the significance of spiritual healing. As a counselor, it is important to note that God is a person; this teaching is well inculcated into Christianity. Our very own personhood is related to God’s personhood. It will help me to change how I think of other human persons, get a proper understanding of what it means to be human and my thoughts on personhood. To properly understand human personhood, I must note that God himself is the premier person; he is the chief and first exemplar of personhood. Understanding God...

...Raytheon (RTN) And Textron (TXT) Raytheon (RTN) Mission statement: “Aspiring to be the most admired defense and aerospace systems supplier through world-class people and technology”. (Raytheon.com) Background and History Raytheon was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1922, as the American Appliance Company, by Laurence K. Marshall, Vannevar Bush, and Charles G. Smith. Marshall and Bush were engineering students, while Smith was an inventor and scientist, but they were all entrepreneurs. After failures to market an idea for a new refrigerator the trio began to focus on electronics. (Raytheon, Wikipedia.com) An idea that Smith and Bush had worked on years earlier, “a new kind of gaseous tube that would allow radios for the first time to be plugged into a wall socket and operate on electricity rather than batteries”, would be their new direction. (Raytheon Company, fundinginguniverse.com) After acquiring a patent for the idea and because an Indian company already had rights to the name American Appliance Company, Raytheon Manufacturing Company was born. (Raytheon Company, fundinginguniverse.com) The consumer demand for electronics was booming and the new radio-receiver power supply (gaseous rectifier), which immediately allow radios to be in every household for pennies of what it cost to continuously replace batteries. (History, Raytheon.com) As the competition for radio-receiving tubes began to intensify Raytheon, mainly Laurence K, Marshall, saw the need to diversify...

...Assignment 1: Organizational Analysis Keira White Professor Kim Williams BUS310 Human Resource Management May 3, 2015 When choosing a company for this assignment I wanted to choose a company that had local ties to where I live but also was a fairly large company so that I could gather the appropriate information. The company I chose is Raytheon. Raytheon is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. Raytheon’s core manufacturing concentrations are in weapons and military and commercial electronics. Raytheon was established back in 1922, reestablished in 1928 but did not take on its current name until 1959. With a history of innovation spanning 90 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a broad range of mission support services. They are not only the world’s largest producer of guided missiles, but they are also the fourth largest defense contractor in the United States by revenue. What stands out the most to me when I think of Raytheon is the Patriot Missile from the Persian Gulf War in the early 1990s. Raytheon’s vision is to be the most admired defense and aerospace systems company through their world-class people, innovation and technology. Another thing about Raytheon that really sticks out in my mind is that...
