There is a lot of action, excitement, and suspense in chapter twelve. First and foremost, this is when Bilbo meets Smaug. Smaug is the evil antagonist that killed an entire kingdom, ate them, and stole all of their valuable belongings, not to mention a fire breathing dragon as well as Thorin’s worst enemy. This is someone you do not want to mess with, and in chapter twelve, that is exactly what Bilbo and the dwarves decide to do. The worry of Smaug finding them and/or killing them plus Tolkien's word choice causes suspense and excitement to pop up constantly. For example, on page 187, “They had barely time to fly back to the tunnel, pulling and dragging their bundles, when Smaug came hurtling from the North, licking the mountain-side with flame…”
