...Ducksters is a children’s website that provides many biographies about people in history such as philosophers from Ancient Greece, to modern inventors such as Henry Ford. I could use this website in a variety of ways. When discussing a moment in history, I could pull up the biography of a person from that time. As a class, we could review this individual’s biography, and discuss why or how they impacted people’s lives then and now. Another way I could use this website is by allowing each student to research a different person of their choice. This would also be a language arts integrated activity. Students can learn about biographies, and learn what that individual did that helped shape life today. Students could create a PowerPoint about the individual that they...

...1.0: Introduction Writing is one of the most crucial aspects in language learning. It is not an easy task as it seems as writing is actually a process; and it is the teachers’ responsibilities to help students becoming good writers. According to Hedge (2005), writing process consists of four stages that are ‘Composing’, ‘Communicating’, ‘Crafting’ and ‘Improving’ (pp. 17). Therefore, this essay presents the main principles that underlie in activities that assist learners at these different stages in the writing process which is designed by Tricia Hedge in her book, ‘Writing’ (2005). This paper will start with a discussion about the first stage of writing that is ‘Composing’, and continue with another stage which is ‘Communicating’. ‘Crafting’ will be explained next, and finally, the last stage which is ‘Improving’ will be addressed. Additionally, an example of activity will be illustrated in each section. 2.0: Composing Composing is a stage that ‘takes a writer from pre-writing to polishing a final draft for a specific purpose and a particular audience’ (pp. 81). Hedge believes that good writing is often recursive, and not linear where various operations take place simultaneously throughout writing process. There are three main activities in this stage; pre-writing, drafting and redrafting, and editing. In pre-writing, the focus will be mainly on planning the outlines and exploring possible content. The learners will be aided to identify the purpose and the audience...

...today. Several maps of England and Wales created by smith still exist. He was the first person to use fossils as mapping tools. In 1812, maps of England and Wales created by Smith himself with no help and only his own money were published by John Cary and were sold at £5.25 a copy. That did not pay enough for Smith, so he later fell into debt and landed in a debtor’s prison. After his release, he lived in Scarborough from 1824 to 1826, took on many odd jobs, and built a geological museum and called it the Rotunda. It was renamed ‘The William Smith museum of Geology’ by Lord Oxborgh in May 2008. After a few years of jumping from job to job, he finally found a steady job and a good home. In 1828, he was given a post as land steward to Sir John Johnston of Hackness. In 1831, the president of the Geological society of London awarded the first Wollaston medal to Smith. The Wollaston Medal is awarded to “geologists who have had a significant influence by means of a substantial body of excellent research in either or both pure and applied aspects of the science.”...

...by the treatment of Indian immigrants in South Africa, so he joined the struggle to obtain basic rights for them. (BBC, 2013) He developed a non-violent way to address the wrong doings with speeches and protest, which attracted millions of followers, including the South African government. During his time, Gandhi led three major movements that he turned into political weapons. They were the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Civil Disobedience Movement, and the Quit India Movement. (Indian independence movement, n.d.) The Civil Disobedience Movement caused for the whole nation to join Gandhi in his fight against the British. This started the negotiating of the Indian Independence, but at this point the British were still not ready to let go. (Maps of India, 2004) After 15 more years, and a few more arrest, Gandhi finally had the chance to talk to Britain’s new government about the independence the nation craved. He sensed they wanted more power, so he distanced himself from the negotiations. Even so, the government eventually conceded too many of Gandhi’s demands, which led to the Indian Independence Act 1947. (Indian independence movement, n.d.) opposition One of Gandhi’s protests that was a significant political change was the Civil Disobedience Movement, which included the Salt March. It was a non-violent march protesting the British Salt Tax because the British were not compromising with the pleas for the Indian independence. ...establish modern communication. After serving a mission in Tunisia, he was transferred to Algeria where he served another mission. The French treated their efforts in Algeria completely differently than their efforts in Tunisia. Upon leaving Algeria, Cholesky joined the Geodesic section of the army geographic service. ... Not to mention, those who witnessed the take off “reported that a radio antenna may have been damaged,” (Source: Amelia Earhart Biography). In addition, the radio equipment that could broadcast radio radio signals farther distances were left behind in order to allow more room for fuel onboard. This plays an immense role in the succeeding circumstances as Earhart had trouble communicating over the radio. Additionally, Earhart’s navigator, Noonan, had extreme difficulty with celestial navigation due to the extensive overcast conditions. It was, also, later discovered that the flyers were using maps that may have been inaccurate. This, too, plays a role in future events as Earhart and Noonan have difficulty locating their destination. To assist with their landing, “the United States Coast Guard cutter Itasca was on station at Howland, assigned to communicate with Earhart's Lockheed Electra 10E and guide them to the island once...

...Perry, Oklahoma. Meridel was born into a family of social and political activists. Her mother made a living traveling and speaking as a feminist socialist, speaking about issues important to women such as education and birth control. The influence of political and social activists in her family most likely led her to write about and speak up for people without a voice. “She said she learned early to write down what they were saying, hiding behind water troughs in the streets, under tables at home—listening. Listening to the tales of the lives of the people, her writings were grounded in these grassroots, salt-of-the-earth stories and experiences of working people, of the poor, the disenfranchised, the dispossessed.” (meridellesueur.org/biography). She had a brief acting career as a stunt actress and graced films such as The Perils of Pauline and Last of the Mohicans as an extra. After leaving her acting career behind she focused solely on her writings. She published her works throughout the 1920's until the end of the Second World War, when blacklisting of those who were involved in the socialist movement began. It was a hard time for Lesueur. During the height of the "red scare," Lesueur made her living publishing children's books, teaching writing, and holding a variety of odd jobs. (washburn.edu/reference/cks/mapping/lesueur/). By the 1970's where people were more open to accepting different political views, Lesueur's works thrived. She began to publish both new and old writings...
