This paper will discuss the differences between the DSM IV and the DSM V in regards to autism and the impact that it will have on the groups of people with autism. Wing, Gould, and Gillberg (2011) wrote a paper on whether the autism spectrum disorder for the DSM V was worse or better than the diagnosis in the DSM IV. Overall, they came to the conclusion that the diagnosis in the DSM V had missed out on quite a few issues such as the following: social imagination, diagnosis in adulthood and infancy, and the fact that women and girls with autism may still go misdiagnosed and unrecognized in the DSM V. The DSM IV never took into account that some people with autism have sensory input issues. The draft of the DSM V did not include issues of responses to sensory inputs as a definite aspect of autism. However, the DSM V did account for the issues with sensory input that many people on the spectrum said they experienced; although, the DSM V did not make ‘having sensory input issues’ a necessity in order to get a diagnosis for autism spectrum disorder.
