Abstract
This research paper will inform you about BJ’s Wholesale Club. You will learn of there mission and vision statements. How this club keeps to its mission and vision statements. How it is involved in our local communities. Maybe you will want to be a part of this company.

I have chosen BJ’s Wholesale Club because I am a member and I probably should know a little more about the company. The information about BJ’s that I already knew was, the store was named after the owner’s daughter, Beverly Jean. The owner started this company in the 1980’s.
A man named Azyre started BJ’s Wholesale Club. BJ’s started as a discount department store chain in 1984, on the border of Medford/Malden, Massachusetts. When Zayre sold their nameplate to Ames, a rival discount department store, TJX Companies was formed which owned BJ's. TJX spun off their "warehouse division," consisting of BJ's and now defunct Home Club, to form Waban, Inc. Later Waban spun off BJ's to become an independent company, headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts. (Scripophily) As of January 30, 2010, BJ's operates 190 BJ's warehouses in fifteen states. (Bjs.com) It employees over 23,500 people (full and part-time.) Today, BJ's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "BJ". The letters B and J are commonly misinterpreted to stand for Berkley and Jensen, which is also a brand name, sold in their stores. In fact, it stands for Beverly Jean, the daughter of one of the company founders. BJ's competitors include Sam's Club and Costco Wholesale clubs. The Company is ranked #232 on Fortune Magazine’s listing of America’s 500 largest public companies. BJ's is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "BJ." (bjs.com)

Since the opening of the first Club in 1984, BJ’s Wholesale Club has taken great pride in being a good corporate citizen. It has expressed that pride through our dedication to giving back to the communities it serves. Through charitable giving, community relations programs, product donations and grants from BJ’s Charitable Foundation, BJ’s supports and enhances programs that provide vital services within each community. It focuses primarily on children and families with the goal of creating a positive, long-lasting impact. (BJ’s.com) BJ’s Wholesale Club has been in a couple of lawsuits due to its lack of security. In today’s society it is so hard to keep customers information secure. BJ’s has tried to fix this problem and to win its members over with the new security system. BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that its failure to take appropriate security measures to protect the sensitive information of thousands of its customers was an unfair practice that violated federal law. According to the FTC, an unauthorized person or persons to make millions of dollars of fraudulent purchases used this information. The settlement will require BJ’s to implement a comprehensive information security program and obtain audits by an independent third party security professional every other year for 20 years. (Farrell, C) January 20, 2011, BJ’s Charitable Foundation Contributes More Than $590,000 to 79 Nonprofits. BJ’s Charitable Foundation announced today that it has donated $591,600 to 79 nonprofits that focus on providing services in the form of hunger prevention, self-sufficiency, health care or education to those in need that reside in the communities BJ’s serves. “Not only is BJ’s Wholesale Club extremely proud to serve our Members, the company believes it’s equally important to support the communities in which we have clubs,” said Jessica Newman, manager of community relations for BJ’s Wholesale Club. BJ’s Charitable Foundation will continue to put a strong emphasis on giving back to local communities that support basic needs. (BJ’s.com) In Jacksonville BJ’s supports Community Connections in which it donated $10,000 to purchase food staples and after school/daycare snacks for the Food Pantry for Family Emergency Relief Program serving homeless and low-income youth ages 6 weeks to 15 years in North Florida. It also supports the Hope Haven Association BJ’s donated $5,000 to support Hope Academy-Project Search, which provides career development and job readiness for young adults, ages18-29, with cognitive disabilities. Funding would support non-administrative staff salaries, books and instructional materials, and more. The last organization BJ’s donated $5000 to the Jewish Adoption and Jewish Family & Community Services, to pay for non-administrative, program-related salaries and rent, as well as to purchase food for the Emergency Food Pantry. The food pantry provides groceries to families experiencing hunger. Visitors receive a three-day supply of nutritionally balanced non-perishable food. I became a member of BJ’s Wholesale Club six years ago because it was closer to my house and the Boy Scout troop I was affiliated with was a member. I have found that shopping in bulk saves me time and money. I hate shopping and this allows me to shop for big items, toilet paper, paper towels, etc twice a year. I also like the fact that they carry name bran items. BJ’s also is the first wholesale store to use EBT cards (food stamps). BJ's realizes in today’s economy that a lot of its members now have to seek help from the social service department. I have shopped at Sam’s Club and Costco and have priced matched BJ’s items to there’s and BJ’s is usually cheaper by $2.00 to $5.00. I am proud to be a part of this wholesale chain.

Reflection
It surprised me on how much BJ’s wholesale Club is a part of the Jacksonville community. I have learned a lot about this store. I also still feel confident about using my credit/debit card at this store. It is hard to keep customers information from being stolen by a hacker but after the lawsuit BJ’s has stepped up the plate to do everything it can to keep you safe. I have also learned that the chain is for sale. This could be a good move for the customer or it could spell disaster. Usually when ownership changes hands they get rid of all of the old employees and bring in new employees. Then they change the operation and this usually doesn’t work well for the new company. When you start changing things that work well with the company and its customers you usually loose customers and money. I will be following this closely. I did find it difficult on getting information about this company. The webpage did not provide the mission statement and was not user friendly. I do like a challenge so it made the paper interesting to research. I am proud to be a member of the BJ’s Wholesale Club.

...09/26/2013 Question 1: Competition in the North American wholesale club industry is high, with Costco being its leader at 56% of the market share. Main ways to compete are lower prices, more efficient operations, and reduced labor and overhead costs as well. Some of the clubs do the bare minimum in advertising while others, like BJ’s, spend more money on it (special Christmas radio advertisement and such). Out of the five competitive forces, the strongest is the rivalry between the competitors, because all of the players in this market attempt to offer high-quality products at lower prices. According to Figure 3.3, one of the reasons for rivalry amongst competitors to be strong is a relatively low cost to buyers to switch brands, and also if buyer demand is growing slowly, both of which are true in this case. All competitors in this industry are focusing on low margins on the products and high volumes of sales. Suppliers do have some power and influence on the wholesale club members, especially in the case with Costco, which buys some of its goods on the gray market and is known to sell some big-ticket items, but with globalization happening and more and more of suppliers being available around the world, they do not present a reason for concern as high as the rivalry between market players. ...Competition among the North American Warehouse Clubs: Costco Wholesale versus Sam's Club versus BJ's Wholesale The company competitive strategy are the specific moves that help the company please the customers, make offensive and defensive moves to beat the competition, and how it responds to changing market conditions. The five generic competitive strategies describe the five methods firms use to generate their strategic options. Firms use a low-cost provider strategy, a focused or market niche low cost strategy, a focused or market niche differentiation strategy, a best-cost provider strategy, or a strategic combination of all five. The North American warehouse clubs case show how Costco Wholesale, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale are using strategy to try and win customers. The membership warehouse club began in 1976 and after a rocky start, has expanded to a global industry. Costco and Sam’s Club began in 1983 and BJ’s followed in 1984.
