The Blame Game
The Downfall of Oedipus and Othello

Both Othello and Oedipus are dramatic plays of tragic circumstances. Although written at different times and by different types of writers, each play has some of the same elements. Deceit, violence and self-destruction reign throughout. Each features men of great power reduced to nothing. However, the downfall of Oedipus is the work of the gods; the downfall of Othello is self-inflicted. Little is known of Shakespeare’s early life, but by 1592 he was well-established and successful in his vocation.(Folger, xxiii) By the time Othello was first performed, the author was already one of the most popular playwrights of his day and many of his best plays were already behind him.(Folger, xvi) His career spanned about 20 years. (New Folger, xxvi)
Othello was composed between 1601 and 1604, with its first performance being in 1604. (Folger, x) The play was very popular and records indicate it remained popular through the seventeenth century. The source of the play was a short story from the Hecatommitchi, a collection of short stories by an Italian named Giovanni Battista Giraldi, published in 1565. (Folger, xi) The specific story is from a section of the collection titled “The Unfaithfulness of Husbands and Wives.”(Folger,xi) The main type of imagery used in Othello is that of animals in action, preying on one another. (Shakespeare’s Imagery, 335)
In the play, Othello is newly married to Desdemona. Although they seem to be very much in love, it appears the marriage is doomed from the very beginning. He is a Moor, described as dark skinned and foreign. She is white and Venetian. There is a considerable age difference between them. They marry in secret, which angers her father. Immediately after they are married, Othello is needed to travel to Cyprus to do battle with the Turks which would typically cause a separation. After much debate Desdemona is allowed to travel with her husband to Cyprus. During their travel on separate ships, a storm arises. The storm is severe, they each barely survive. All the while Iago, who “hates the Moor” is plotting to destroy Othello. (Othello, 1.3, 429)
Iago has many reasons for wanting to bring down Othello, the main one being that he over looked him for the position of lieutenant in favor of Cassio. But he doesn’t just use deceit to try to get the promotion he thinks he deserves; he also wants to ruin Othello’s happiness. He convinces Othello that Desdemona has been unfaithful with Cassio; killing two birds with one stone. Othello is unable to discern truth from lies, resulting in the most heinous of acts; the murder of his wife. After, when the truth is revealed through Iago’s wife Emilia, Othello is unable to live with what he has done and kills himself.
Sophocles is most often associated with Athens at the height of her glory and power. (Sophocles, 1) Although sources for his life are unreliable, we know he was born around 496 B.C. and lived to be 90. (Sophocles 6) He was a tragic dramatist and served as an Athenian general. (Literature, 947) He is also one of the three great Greek writers of tragedy whose work has survived. (Literature, 947) During his time of writing, tragedies were performed as a competition. Sophocles won his first award in 468 B.C. and went on to win others. His career produced more than 120 plays, but only 7 have survived. (Literature, 947)
Oedipus is believed to have been first produced in 425 B.C. (Literature, 947). It premiered at the Great Dionysia feast day after Athens had survived a plague. The play was later given the name Oedipus Tyrannos to separate it from Sophocles last Oedipus play, Oedipus at Colonus. It is considered a Greek tragedy type of play. This type of play incorporates spoken verse by actors followed by sung verse by a chorus. (Sophocles, 5) The name Oedipus also means “swollen foot” or “club foot,” which relates to the injury the main character sustained in infancy. (Literature, 947)
Oedipus is based on a Greek legend. The king and queen of Thebes are told by an oracle that their son would kill his father and marry his mother. In an attempt to avoid this fate, when a son is born to them they have him taken out to the wilderness, his feet bound together and left to die. The child is found, saved and adopted by the king and queen of Corinth. As a young man, Oedipus hears the prophesy of the oracle concerning him. He decides to leave Corinth to avoid his fate. Along the road, he encounters seemingly ordinary old man traveling. There is a struggle between the two over their position on the road and Oedipus kills the man. Also during his journey he encounters the Sphinx, who is afflicting the city of Thebes. Oedipus defeats the Sphinx by answering her riddle. As a reward Oedipus marries the widowed queen of Thebes and becomes king.
The play begins with Oedipus as an established ruler of Thebes for many years. The city of Thebes is again afflicted, it is determined by Oedipus that they must find and punish whoever murder the king to put an end to their troubles. Through investigation and questioning of key people within the king’s court, Oedipus learns the truth. The old man he murdered on the road was King Laius. The king and queen of Corinth were not his real parents. His wife Queen Jocasta, whom he has born children with, is actually his mother. He has unknowingly fulfilled the prophesy spoken of him anyway. Distraught over learning the truth of what they have done, Queen Jocasta commits suicide and Oedipus gauges out his own eyes.
After reading Othello, one might be inclined to place all the blame on Iago. He certainly earned the title of “bad guy” and deserves to be blamed for what happened to Othello. However, although Iago was deceitful and manipulative, he is not completely at fault for the final events of the play. Ultimately, it is Othello who holds the blame for what happened. He is the one who did not attempt to separate truth from lies. He is the one put his trust Iago someone he didn’t even trust enough to make his lieutenant, over his own wife or even his own feelings. And it was his hands that strangled Desdemona. Othello is responsible for his actions, no one forced him to do what he did, and his downfall was his own.
By contrast, Oedipus’ actions were taken based on the circumstances in which he found himself. Although the choices he made led to a self-fulfillment of the prophesy, there was no malice involved. He didn’t knowingly kill his father and marry his mother. During the time of Oedipus, the gods controlled people’s fates. The only thing Oedipus is guilty of is trying to avoid a disastrous fate predicted by the same gods who controlled his life. One can assume that if an oracle can predict his fate, an oracle could have also let him know what he was doing was wrong. However, the gods remained silent even when Oedipus was taking steps to seal his predicted fate. Oedipus is responsible for his actions, but his downfall was the work of the gods.
In conclusion, it is clear that both Othello and Oedipus suffered devastatingly tragic events in their life. At first glance it would appear that the blame for Othello’s downfall would lie with Iago that is not the case. Upon further investigation one can conclude that in the end, it is Othello who must take the blame and suffer the consequences for his actions; which he did, with his suicide. With Oedipus it is clear from the beginning that he is innocent in everything that happened. And although he suffers the consequences for his actions, he is not to blame. No one who has either of these plays would disagree with the label of “tragedy” when referring to them. But while the events of both plays are equal in their events being tragic, sad and destructive, that is where their similarities end. Their one differentiating fact lies in who is responsible.

Influence of Visual Media

...two women. These may be small things now looking back, but were really ahead of its time back then and was a sign of what was to come with the growing popularity of visual media and entertainment. Pushing the line and finding the next big thing in entertainment and news have always been the goal in the American culture. This new age is about who has the biggest news the best shows or the most groundbreaking. That’s what is and has shaped our American culture from visual entertainment and media. (Jacqueline L. Jennings, 2013) The social influences from these visual entertainment media seems to be mostly positive though in most instances our culture picks and choose when to blame it. When a teen commits a shooting in a school or some form of violent crime, the media and society is quick to base it on video games and or music. This in most instances isn’t the case at all. It’s a combination of a lot of things. All these times people never speak on the parents or all the adults surrounding these teens. Teachers, counselors...

Violent Media Is Good for Kids

...a good thing for kids. When a violent act occurs, the first thing people do is to place the blame on violent media; such as movies, television shows, video games, and comic books. People direct their attention to murderous, gruesome, horrific acts that occur in those types of media. They only want to blame certain media outlets because it is easier to find a reason. Gerrard Jones thinks quite the opposite. He tries to persuade the audience that in spite of all the people’s negative intensions about violent media and things they say about its effect on society, violent media is actually beneficial for the younger ones. His main argument to support his thesis is that violent media has certain benefits and positives that most people outlook. His thesis expresses that violent media is not a bad influence on children, but it does however; allow them to better express themselves. The purpose of his argument is to show the benefits of exposing our children to violent content. Violence helps mould children into an individual who can control their rage better and can even become well rounded individuals. He deems superheroes as acceptable forms of violence because they give kids the idea of powering through hurdles and other barriers in their lives by being inspired by the actions. It prepares the children for violence in reality and teaches them how to control their rage. Various violent games, movies, toy guns can prove handy in children to master their rage as children will identify...

Although these two players are debatably the best in the game of basketball today, who is the better of the two? Some people say LeBron while others say Kobe. I say let us look at the facts and then decide. Kobe Bean Bryant was born on August 23rd, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Kobe is the son of former NBA player Joe Bryant. In 1984, Joe Bryant ended his NBA career and moved his family to Italy where he began his new career in the Italian League. Growing up in Italy, Kobe began playing basketball and soccer. Tim Goodman Hate Violence Turn It Off Summary

...Violence is not something new to the human race, but it is an increasing problem in modern society. In his essay “Hate Violence? Turn It Off,” Tim Goodman argues that if parents or other adults object to a television program, they should change the channel or just simply turn off the television. I disagree with Goodman’s argument. Turning off the television or changing the channel is not enough. What happens when the adults are not there to supervise their kids? What about other influences that promotes or shows violence? What then? Can a concern, such as violence be simply turn off or change? When children are young, the television already begins to have an influence in their life. If we were to look at any typical family household, we...

The Fast Food Business

...The fast food business is a thriving metropolis in America. According to David Zinczenko’s essay, “Don’t Blame the Eater”, fast food vendors can be found on every block. Zinczenko explains that fast food is the only viable option for the youth of today. He recalls how as a latchkey child, he had no healthy options since fast food was staring him right in the face, causing him to become obese at a young age. Contrary to his beliefs, healthy choices existed when David was a child and still exist today. Inexpensive alternative food sources are not so hard to find. In fact, many fast food restaurants offer somewhat healthy alternatives, such as Subway. If a person chooses to eat at McDonald’s or another fast food place, have a salad, forgo the dressing, and have water instead of a supersized coke. There are plenty of nutritious substitutions out there. Local food markets and grocery stores are not invisible. The same amount of money spent on a burger and fries can be used to buy veggies and fruit, a much healthier choice. Grocery stores sell items that are pre-made and pre-packaged such as salads, wraps, and sandwiches which list the nutritional data right on the package. Fast foods are a matter of convenience for the consumer. Why spend time cooking when you can get your meal in a bag? Unfortunately, this is the mentally of the youth of today. Zinczenko fails to recognize that no one forces a person to enter that fast food establishment. It is purely a matter of choice. Just...

Should We Pay? Many issues have been plaguing the sports world recently, especially the question of paying college athletes. Are athletics so important that colleges need to put out millions of dollars per year just to pay for students to play for them? Paying college athletes is like throwing a lit match into a haystack: once the fire is started, it just keeps burning, making a bad situation worse. There are several differences between the haystack and paying athletes. To start, throwing a needle in a haystack is a totally negative concept; everything will burn. However, with paying college athletes, some people can find reasons why this could be a positive thing. For instance, some believe paying athletes will bring more competition to the table and make some colleges much more prestigious than others. Others say this will bring in more money and more revenue. A second difference is the end of the situation. At the end of the fire, there is smoke and it will eventually put itself out. However, this is an issue that cannot extinguish itself. No matter what the verdict, someone is going to be unhappy and the "fire" will keep burning. [pic]Despite these differences there are many similarities between the two. One similarity is the haystack going up in flames and the...

Plato Allegory Research Paper

...Applying Plato’s Allegory to Real Life Issues Essay When one wonders about the purpose of school, the answer that immediately comes to mind is quite simple: to educate the children, to prepare the youth for the real world. Then, the animosity students display towards school is seen as resistance to enlightenment, laziness, and inability in the students’ part. However, it cannot be that a system designed for the future is loathed by the future. Even though it is not a science that would have definite results, Plato’s cave allegory can help us gain deeper insight about the school system by simplifying the topic without losing the abstract parts of it. In school, students are fixated on a shadow reality, a world that is far from real, yet treated as absolute even by those outside of it. Students, like the prisoners in the allegory, play the game of who can spot the shadows best and who can predict the next one. Those who excel at it, are rewarded with ‘good grades’, that make even the students’ parents, who clearly live outside the cave that is school, swell with pride. This only increases the student’s fixation on their ability to play the shadow game, which only tightens their shackles. The main shackle students have is their inability to question, which has been strengthened through...

Video games have been blamed for a lot of things from making kids gain weight to making their behavior aggressive. Some of the negative effects parent’s say video games have on children are: 1. Conflict in a Classroom

...Two professors of different backgrounds, Mike Rose of California, and Gerald Graff, of Illinois, discuss the problems college students face today in America. Though similar in slight variations, both professors view the problem in different regards and prepare solutions that solve what they feel to be the heart of this academic problem. Mike Rose, author of The Politics of Remediation, explains that “linguistic exclusion'; is the barrier that prevents many new college students from excelling in the academics at any given university. Gerald Graff, on the other hand, feels that the problem comes from the lack of communication between professors, and that many of the times the students are taught the same concepts but through opposite understandings and in a bias fashion. Mike Rose met many struggling students at UCLA’s Tutorial Center, the Writing Research Project, and the school’s Summer program. He first describes the loneliness students feel upon arriving at college, and that as they try to find themselves, they all to often lose themselves because they are bombarded with ideas that are so foreign to them. He introduces his audiences to Andrea, a bright young girl out of high school who, despite hours of memorizing in her textbook, could not obtain a passing grade on her Chemistry mid-term. How is this possible if she spent so much time studding? Rose explains that she failed because in college, and in this course in particular, it is not enough...

...Topic: Money can bring happiness, do you agree or disagree? (Within 300 words, at least 250 words; IELTS for GENERAL TRAINING) As the most significant symptom of wealth, possessing a large sum of money has become a unique pursuit of many people, especially young generation, around the world. They are convinced of that happiness can bought by sufficient money. However, they could neglect the fact that happiness is not just determined by one factor but many others such as your friends, relatives, and pleasant experience. In my perspective, happiness does not always increase in direct ratio to the rise of money. Focusing on the illusion that money brings happiness may have an unexpected adverse effect that may lead to a misallocation of time. For instance, when some one reflects on how money would change their sense of well-being, they would probably tempt to think about spending more time in leisurely pursuits such as seeing a three-dimensional movie or traveling abroad. But in reality, they would have to spend a large amount of time working and commuting and less time engaged in experienced happiness. On the other hand, it is undeniable that money has a brief effect on life satisfaction, particularly after we have got enough money to satisfy our fundamental need. For example, people who get richer would feel they are better than their peers. Nevertheless, they will soon make richer friends. Therefore, their relative wealth will not be greater than it was before; people quickly...

...Research/Persuasive Essay Violent Video Games “Children on Murder Simulators:” Violent Video Games as Practice for Real Life A very controversial issue in today’s world is violent video games. Do they have an affect on adolescents? Do they influence their actions and thoughts? Over the past couple of years there have been cases of school shootings. In particular the Columbine High School Shooting and Virginia Tech Massacre were both influenced by violent video games. In the Columbine High School shooting, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed thirteen people and then killed themselves. At Virginia Tech, Seung-Hui Cho shot and killed thirty-three people, including himself, and injured twenty-three others (School 1). Violent video games played a major role in these school shootings because the games were tools used to practice there plan and give them the ideas for the weapons they would use and how they would use them. Harris and Klebold attended Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. When the two teens had planned the attack it was intended for propane tanks to detonate that they left in the cafeteria in duffle bags. “According to the report released by the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office, the tanks contained sufficient explosives power to ‘kill the majority of students’ who would be in the cafeteria for lunch” (Columbine 1). Media's Effect on Todays Society

...FINAL ESSAY PT. 1 As the news director of local television station if I had to decide between a local story such as the city council closing three city parks to save money, or a major celebrities death for the lead story for our local nightly broadcast I would choose to make the city council closing three city parks to save money the lead story. I would make this story the lead story because as the news director for the local television station I have a responsibility to the local public to keep them informed of news stories involving their town. Unlike the big networks, or the 24 hour all news stations who serve a worldwide audience, My local television station serves a local public who may depend on me to stay informed of any significant news stories that involve their town. Chances are the celebrity death story has already been broadcast on the big news networks as well as other forms of media like radio, and internet. So, as the news director in charge of the local news I would run the city parks closing story as the lead because not only is it my responsibility to run stories that involve the local population of my viewing area but it is my social responsibility as a journalist to report stories that are relevant to the viewers. I believe a city losing its parks would be more important to the local viewers then a celebrity death. I also believe the ratings would still be better because I would still cover the story about the celebrity death I just would not...
